Royal Bank Pinpad cable

Challenge
To provide a reinforced pinpad cable that could withstand everyday use.
Solution
Using a coiled design, we provided a better quality cable than what was originally used.
The coiled design we used offered more flexibility, reducing the damage caused
by repetitively moving the pinpad. This in turn reduced replacement
and breakdown costs, not to mention the inconvenience of downtime.
Dell Optiplex Cash Register Cable

Challenge
The original cables were situated in such a way as to prevent it from bending,
due to a tight fit between the cash register and a nearby wall.
Solution
Based on a low profile VGA cable, we used a low profile molding that proved to be
more resilient against unnecessary bends in the cable. This in turn saved the company
the money that would have been required to replace the cable, or repair
the equipment using the cable
SATA Latching Cables

Challenge
Design a SATA cable solution for a system builder. The customer was incurring high support costs
due to hard drive cables working loose in shipping and from vibration when in use.
They were forced to hot glue standard SATA cables to the drives to prevent vibration.
Solution
StarTech.com worked closely with the customer's engineering team to design
and tool left angle SATA connectors that would fit snugly into the drives.
In addition, a metal latching system was incorporated into the connectors to ensure
that firm reliable data connections would be maintained.
McDonald’s Canada – Drive-thru cables

Challenge
The repeated stress of high-volume drive-thru transactions was causing
POS (pin pad) cables to break down.
Two step solution
- We first built a metal, water-resistant box containing a circuit board
and power indicator, that could be used to reduce the length of cable
required, in turn eliminating some of the normal wear and tear.
- We then designed a custom molded, coiled cable that would be able to
withstand constant, repeated tension.
McDonald’s Canada – Cash Register ‘Pigtails’

Challenge
After updating their cash registers, the standard RS232 to RJ45 adapters used prior
to the update could no longer be used to connect POS terminals to the main computer network.
Additional factors
Space limitations required a small form factor, due to the intended location.
Solution
We built custom RS232 to RJ45 “pigtails”, with low profile connectors, offering
compatibility while maintaining a small footprint
Loblaw’s – POS Scanner Cable

Challenge
Electromagnetic interference created by checkout line conveyor belts was causing
data scanning errors
Solution
We built a strong, yet flexible cable able to resist interference, comprised of
custom wire and shielding, as well as strain relief molding to combat damage due to repeated use.
Shielded Cables for Healthcare

Challenge
Design and build completely shielded, medical grade cables for use in hospital
environment. These cables carry critical patient data.
Solution
We custom engineered cables using completely shielded wire and connectors that
solved previous interference issues.
Custom Molded Internal Data Cables

Challenge
A Global provider of IT security solutions required custom internal cables for use in digital video management system.
Solution
After thorough engineering engagement, we crafted custom molded connectors that met all color coding and labeling requirements.
Security Cable

Challenge
To provide a cable harness for internal use in proprietary closed circuit video equipment, that allowed for quick and fool-proof installation and replacement in the field.
Solution
Custom cut and zip tied wiring bundles were used with the required IDC type connectors, creating a single, compact and easily installable harness. Color coded wire and clearly labeled connectors were provided to ensure error free installation.
USB Digital

Challenge
Create a cable that would provide an internal USB type ‘A’ connection for a custom control module, that would terminate in an external molded USB type ‘B’ connector. It was critical that the cable be able to withstand the strain that would result from repeated usage and re-positioning.
Solution
We designed and prototyped a strongly shielded USB A-B cable, that would lock perfectly into the groove in the customer’s molded enclosure. Custom strain reliefs were then molded to fit on the inner and outer surfaces of the enclosure, ensuring that the cable would remain securely positioned while still allowing complete flexibility. The look and feel of the finished product were enhanced by the inclusion of the customer’s logo on the cable molding.
High Tech Hydra Cable

Challenge
Design a cable that would provide a high quality connection between a specialized digital projection device and a proprietary PCB, while minimizing the cable footprint, providing optimum durability and ease of installation. Other factors to consider included resistance to cable strain and potential signal degradation.
Solution
We engineered a cable that combined easily identifiable connectors, including RCA and minijack A/V, PS/2 keyboard and two RS-232 serial data lines into a single, optimally shielded harness. Due to the length and combined weight of the assembly, specially sourced thin gauge wire was used, and bundled within a molded PVC jacket to provide a lightweight, compact product at a very competitive cost.
