Overview
This USB-C™ to HDMI adapter lets you connect your laptop or MacBook with USB Type-C™ to an HDMI display. The video adapter features USB Power Delivery, which enables you to power your laptop while you're outputting video to an HDMI display.
USB Type-C is a universal connectivity standard that combines all of your essential functions into one dynamic port. This adapter works with USB-C devices that pass a DisplayPort video signal, such as the MacBook and Chromebook Pixel™. It's also compatible with Thunderbolt™ 3 ports.
Charges your laptop
Unlike some video adapters that take up your laptop’s USB-C charge port while you're outputting video and prevent you from charging your computer, this video adapter supports USB Power Delivery up to 60 Watts and features an additional USB-C port. This means you can charge your laptop, even while outputting video, by simply connecting the laptop’s power adapter to the additional port. It’s the perfect solution for laptops that only have a single USB-C port.
Promotes portability
This USB Type-C video adapter maximizes portability with a lightweight, small-footprint design. It’s the perfect accessory to carry with your MacBook or Chromebook, fitting easily into your laptop bag or carrying case. Its ultra-portable design makes this adapter perfect for BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) applications at the office.
Connects easily
This adapter lets you utilize the versatile USB Type-C port on your portable device. USB Type-C is a reversible connector, so no matter how you plug it in, the adapter will always connect, saving you the hassle and embarrassment of struggling with your device when you're trying to deliver a presentation or sharing information.
Maintains astonishing picture quality
At four times the resolution of high-definition 1080p, you’ll be amazed at the picture quality of a 4K monitor or television. The adapter lets you harness the video capabilities that are built into your USB Type-C connection to deliver the astonishing quality of Ultra HD to your 4K display. 4K resolution gives you additional screen space to simplify your approach to detailed work such as editing video and viewing large spreadsheets.
Even if you're not running 4K, the adapter supports high-definition 1080p and lower resolutions, which gives you peace of mind in knowing that this adapter will comfortably work with any HDMI video display you come across.
The CDP2HDUCP is backed by a 2-year StarTech.com warranty and free lifetime technical support.
Note: Your USB-C equipped device must support video to work with this adapter.
Applications
Charge your USB Type-C laptop and output video using the same USB-C port
Carry the adapter with you when you travel, and connect to any HDMI TV, monitor or projector
Connect to BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) and CYOD (Choose Your Own Device) workstations at your office

Frequently Asked Questions
Before You Buy
USB-C is a type of USB connector that is capable of supporting the following:
- Data transfer speeds up to 10Gbps, if you use USB 3.1.
- Bi-directional power delivery up to 100W, if both the USB host connection and the device support it.
- Alternate modes, which deliver different types of data at different speeds. For example, DisplayPort Alternate Mode (DP Alt Mode).
If using Thunderbolt 3 over USB-C, the connection is capable of additional features. For example, Thunderbolt 3 is capable of 40Gbps of total bandwidth. For more information, refer to the following FAQ: https://www.startech.com/faq/thunderbolt-3-port-capabilities.
Not all USB-C ports or devices are capable of supporting all of the features listed above, or all of the features at the maximum capabilities. If you require a specific USB-C feature, your USB host connection, cables, and device must all support the feature that you require. For more information about whether your components support specific USB-C features, refer to the information provided by the manufacturers.

Troubleshooting
When you troubleshoot issues with a USB video adapter, there are some quick tests that you can complete to rule out potential problems. You can test to make sure that the following components are working correctly and are not the source of the issue:
-
Video cables
-
Video source
-
Video destination
-
USB video adapter
To test your setup components, try the following:
-
Use the video cables, video source, video destination, and USB video adapter in another setup to see if the problem is with the components or the setup.
-
Use a different video cable, video source, video destination, and USB video adapter in your setup to see if the problem persists. Ideally, you should test a component that you know works in another setup.
When you test your cables, it is recommended that you do the following:
-
Test each cable individually.
-
Use short cables when you are testing.
When you test the video cables, video source, video destination, and USB video adapter, it is recommended that you do the following:
-
Check Device Manager under Display adapters, Universal Serial Bus controllers, or USB Display adapters. To do this, press the Windows key + R, type devmgmt.msc, and press Enter to open Device Manager.
-
If you do not see the USB video adapter in Device Manager, refer to the following FAQ: https://www.startech.com/support/faqs/technical-support?topic=expansion-cards#usb-cannot-detect-windows.
-
If the device is listed with an error, reinstall the drivers following the instructions on the website.
-
Check to see if your video card drivers are current. You can check what video card you have in Device Manager under Display adapters. It is recommended that you go directly to the video card manufacturer's website to check for the latest drivers.
-
Check to see if the monitor is being detected by Windows.
To check to see if Windows is detecting the monitor using a computer that is running a version of Windows XP, do the following:
- Right-click on the desktop and click Properties.
- Click the Settings tab.
- If you see Drag the monitor icons to match the physical arrangement of your monitors, it means that Windows is detecting more than a single monitor. You can click the drop-down menu under Display to see which monitors are detected. This option is not available if Windows only detects a single monitor.
To check to see if Windows is detecting the monitor using a computer that is running a version of Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8, do the following:
- Right-click on the desktop and click Screen Resolution.
- You can click the drop-down menu under Display to see which monitors are detected.

Your laptop might not support Power Delivery or might have specific charging requirements. For example, if your laptop requires exactly 60W of power and an adapter consumes some of the 60W, your laptop might not recognize that it is getting enough power.
For more information about Power Delivery, refer to the manufacturer of your hardware.
