The process of encoding data into a smaller file size in order to reduce storage space. The amount a file can be compressed depends on its type (text, picture). Text can be compressed to approximately 40% of the original uncompressed file size; whereas pictures can typically be compressed 20% to 90% of the original uncompressed file size.
