Overview

This universal multifunction adapter lets you expand the connectivity of your laptop or MacBook through USB-C™. You can connect your laptop to a VGA display, while also connecting a traditional USB 3.0 device. And, when coupled with your laptop’s power adapter, the multiport adapter delivers power to help charge and maintain your laptop’s battery.

Rugged, travel-friendly design

This compact USB-C adapter is a vital accessory for virtually any USB-C equipped laptop, MacBook, or Chromebook™. It’s extremely portable, with a lightweight, small-footprint design that tucks neatly into your laptop bag or carrying case.

The rugged multifunction adapter meets the tough demands of travelers. Now you can rest assured knowing your adapter is ready when you are.

Expands your display capabilities

If you have a VGA display or projector, you can connect it to this combo adapter to create a dual-screen workstation, comprised of your laptop’s display and the additional external display or projector. With an additional display, you can get more work done at once by multitasking more efficiently.

Whether you’re delivering a presentation in a boardroom or looking to add a display to your existing laptop workstation, this adapter is a must-have accessory.

Charges your laptop

Because this versatile adapter supports USB Power Delivery, you can power and charge your laptop through its USB Type-C™ port. Simply connect the adapter to your laptop’s USB-C port, and then connect your laptop’s power adapter to the multifunction adapter.

By using a single power adapter to power your laptop and the adapter, instead of using multiple adapters, you can travel lighter and more conveniently. Plus, you can reduce cable clutter in your work area.

Universally supported

Unlike some proprietary laptop adapters designed only to work with specific laptop models, this universal adapter works with multiple brands. All you need is a laptop's USB-C port that supports DP alt mode and USB Power Delivery, and you can be up and running quickly. With universal support, you can use this adapter with different laptops now, or in the future. Plus, it’s compatible with Thunderbolt™ 3 ports.

Works with older USB devices

This USB-C to VGA multifunction adapter features a USB 3.0 port that's backward compatible with older USB devices. It’s perfect for data transfers, syncing, or charging your mobile device.

The CDP2VGAUACP is backed by a StarTech.com 3-year warranty and free lifetime technical support.

Note: Your USB-C equipped device must support video to work with this adapter.

Applications

Carry the adapter with you when you travel, and connect to almost any VGA monitor, TV, or projector

Ideal for BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) and CYOD (Choose Your Own Device) applications in the office

An essential accessory for the latest USB-C equipped laptops and Windows® based tablets, as well as the Apple MacBook, and Google Chromebook™

Frequently Asked Questions

Before You Buy

USB-C is a type of USB connector that is capable of supporting the following:

  • Data transfer speeds up to 10Gbps, if you use USB 3.1.
  • Bi-directional power delivery up to 100W, if both the USB host connection and the device support it.
  • Alternate modes, which deliver different types of data at different speeds. For example, DisplayPort Alternate Mode (DP Alt Mode).

If using Thunderbolt 3 over USB-C, the connection is capable of additional features. For example, Thunderbolt 3 is capable of 40Gbps of total bandwidth. For more information, refer to the following FAQ: https://www.startech.com/faq/thunderbolt-3-port-capabilities.

Not all USB-C ports or devices are capable of supporting all of the features listed above, or all of the features at the maximum capabilities. If you require a specific USB-C feature, your USB host connection, cables, and device must all support the feature that you require. For more information about whether your components support specific USB-C features, refer to the information provided by the manufacturers.

To use all of the features of this USB-C device, it is required that all of the following components support USB Power Delivery 2.0 and DisplayPort Alternate Mode:

  • The USB-C host connection.
  • The USB-C cable.
  • The USB-C device (for example, a hard drive docking station).

To check how much power this device requires, visit the product page, and look on the Technical Specifications tab.

For more information about the power delivery capabilities of your other components, refer to the information provided by the manufacturers.

Troubleshooting

When you troubleshoot issues with a laptop docking station, there are some quick tests that you can complete to rule out potential problems. You can test to make sure that the following components are working correctly and are not the source of the issue:

  • Video cables

  • Video source

  • Video destination

  • Laptop Docking Station

  • USB peripherals

  • Ethernet Connection

To test your setup components, try the following:

  • Use the video cables, video source, video destination, laptop docking station, USB peripherals, and Ethernet connection in another setup to see if the problem is with the components or the setup.

  • Use a different video cable, video source, video destination, laptop docking station, USB peripherals, and Ethernet connection setup to see if the problem persists. Ideally, you should test a component that you know works in another setup.

When you test your cables, it is recommended that you do the following:

  • Test each cable individually.

  • Use short cables when you are testing.

When you test the video cables, video source, video destination, and laptop docking station it is recommended that you do the following:

  1. Press the Windows key + R, type devmgmt.msc, and press Enter to open Device Manager.

  2. If you do not see the USB video adapter in Device Manager, refer to the following FAQ: https://www.startech.com/support/faqs/technical-support?topic=expansion-cards#usb-cannot-detect-windows.

  3. If the device is listed with an error, reinstall the drivers following the instructions on the website.

  4. Check to see if your video card drivers are current. You can check what video card you have in Device Manager under Display adapters. It is recommended that you go directly to the video card manufacturer's website to check for the latest drivers.

  5. Check to see if the monitor is being detected by Windows.

For more information about testing the USB peripherals and the laptop docking station, visit www.startech.com/faq/usb_hubs_general_troubleshooting.

When you test Ethernet and the laptop docking station, refer to the following FAQ: http://www.startech.com/faq/network_adapters_general_troubleshooting.

When you test sound and the laptop docking station, refer to the following FAQ: http://www.startech.com/faq/sound_cards_general_troubleshooting.

Your laptop might not support Power Delivery or might have specific charging requirements. For example, if your laptop requires exactly 60W of power and an adapter consumes some of the 60W, your laptop might not recognize that it is getting enough power.

For more information about Power Delivery, refer to the manufacturer of your hardware.
