This is no ordinary video adapter. Yes, it enables you to connect the USB-C™ port on your computer to a VGA display or projector, but it also features a unique Presentation Mode switch. When you turn on this switch, the adapter prevents your computer from launching its screen saver, going to sleep or entering power save mode. The adapter ensures that your screen will always stay on, making it the perfect USB-C video adapter for any presentation or meeting.

Keep your audience engaged with your presentation

Photo illustrates a laptop computer using the adapter to present

When you deliver a presentation, your goal is to engage with your audience, not your computer. But, if you don't move your mouse soon enough, or change your power settings, your screen goes black due to inactivity while you're addressing the audience. This can be a major distraction when you're trying to focus on the message you're communicating.

This adapter prevents screen disruptions with Presentation Mode, a unique feature that automatically initiates occasional cursor movement to prevent your computer’s power settings from interrupting your presentation. It’s perfect for sharing websites, drawings, spreadsheets, PDFs or slide shows during your meeting.

Turn Presentation Mode on or off

You can turn Presentation Mode on or off, depending on your application. Turn it on when you're in the boardroom and want your screen to stay on, and turn it off when you’re using the adapter at your workspace or office desk, to enable your computer's original power settings to take effect. Using the toggle switch is easy, and saves you the hassle of constantly making adjustments in your operating system settings.

Hassle-free setup and operation on Mac and PC

To ensure easy operation and installation, this unique adapter is natively supported on Windows® and Mac computers. It’s easy to connect the adapter using the versatile USB Type-C™ port on your computer. The reversible USB-C connector means you will always plug it in correctly on your first try, saving you the hassle and distraction of repeatedly attempting to connect your laptop to a display or projector.

Crystal-clear picture quality

The adapter supports video resolutions up to 1920x1200 or 1080p. You’ll be surprised at the picture quality the adapter provides, even when you connect it to a legacy VGA projector or television. The adapter harnesses the video capabilities that are built into your USB Type-C connection to deliver every detail in stunning high-definition.

The CDP2VGASA is backed by a 3-year StarTech.com warranty and free lifetime technical support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Installation

This device is plug and play. It does not use any drivers, and does not require any setup tasks other than plugging in the source (for example, a computer) and the destination (for example, a monitor).

Troubleshooting

When you troubleshoot issues with a USB video adapter, there are some quick tests that you can complete to rule out potential problems. You can test to make sure that the following components are working correctly and are not the source of the issue:

  • Video cables

  • Video source

  • Video destination

  • USB video adapter

To test your setup components, try the following:

  • Use the video cables, video source, video destination, and USB video adapter in another setup to see if the problem is with the components or the setup.

  • Use a different video cable, video source, video destination, and USB video adapter in your setup to see if the problem persists. Ideally, you should test a component that you know works in another setup.

When you test your cables, it is recommended that you do the following:

  • Test each cable individually.

  • Use short cables when you are testing.

When you test the video cables, video source, video destination, and USB video adapter, it is recommended that you do the following:

  • Check Device Manager under Display adapters, Universal Serial Bus controllers, or USB Display adapters. To do this, press the Windows key + R, type devmgmt.msc, and press Enter to open Device Manager.

  • If you do not see the USB video adapter in Device Manager, refer to the following FAQ: https://www.startech.com/support/faqs/technical-support?topic=expansion-cards#usb-cannot-detect-windows.

  • If the device is listed with an error, reinstall the drivers following the instructions on the website.

  • Check to see if your video card drivers are current. You can check what video card you have in Device Manager under Display adapters. It is recommended that you go directly to the video card manufacturer's website to check for the latest drivers.

  • Check to see if the monitor is being detected by Windows.

To check to see if Windows is detecting the monitor using a computer that is running a version of Windows XP, do the following:

  • Right-click on the desktop and click Properties.
  • Click the Settings tab.
  • If you see Drag the monitor icons to match the physical arrangement of your monitors, it means that Windows is detecting more than a single monitor. You can click the drop-down menu under Display to see which monitors are detected. This option is not available if Windows only detects a single monitor.

To check to see if Windows is detecting the monitor using a computer that is running a version of Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8, do the following:

  • Right-click on the desktop and click Screen Resolution.
  • You can click the drop-down menu under Display to see which monitors are detected.

How To

To arrange extended displays on Windows 10, complete the following.

  1. Press the Windows key+R, type desk.cpl, and press Enter.
  2. Under the ‘Multiple Displays’ selection, select ‘Extend Desktop To This Display.’
  3. Press ‘Identify’ to determine what number each display is assigned to.
  4. Drag and drop each display accordingly to the physical layout on your desk.
  5. Click the Apply button.

To arrange extended displays on macOS, complete the following.

  1. Navigate to the Apple Menu > System Preferences, click Displays, then click Arrangement
  2. Make sure that the ‘Mirror Displays’ checkbox is not selected.
  3. Click on each display to determine what number each display is assigned to.
  4. Drag and drop each display accordingly to the physical layout on your desk.

Before You Buy

USB-C is a type of USB connector that is capable of supporting the following:

  • Data transfer speeds up to 10Gbps, if you use USB 3.1.
  • Bi-directional power delivery up to 100W, if both the USB host connection and the device support it.
  • Alternate modes, which deliver different types of data at different speeds. For example, DisplayPort Alternate Mode (DP Alt Mode).

If using Thunderbolt 3 over USB-C, the connection is capable of additional features. For example, Thunderbolt 3 is capable of 40Gbps of total bandwidth. For more information, refer to the following FAQ: https://www.startech.com/faq/thunderbolt-3-port-capabilities.

Not all USB-C ports or devices are capable of supporting all of the features listed above, or all of the features at the maximum capabilities. If you require a specific USB-C feature, your USB host connection, cables, and device must all support the feature that you require. For more information about whether your components support specific USB-C features, refer to the information provided by the manufacturers.

I bought this adapter about 4 days ago, and after a lot of searching for some software to run this with, my windows 10 laptop keeps telling me that the device requires a driver to be used. And then I come here to look for any, but there are no drivers at all... No fun indeed.

Sorry to hear this, we would like to offer some assistance. This issue may occur if your USB-C port does not support video. Since not all USB-C ports support video; there are some situations where this product won't work. We recommend checking your computer manufacturer's documentation to confirm what USB-C features will work for your laptop. If there are any further questions, please feel free to contact our technical support team by clicking Chat Live at the top of this page.

Excellent USB-C to VGA Adapter

By: huj197546 - 10/19/2018
I have been in the AV/IT Integration space for over 30 years. I found this unit easy to setup and use on my Microsoft and Apple devices. This unit has the ability to connect the USB-C port on your computer to a VGA flat panel display or projector. This unit also features a Presentation Mode switch, that when turned on, the adapter prevents your computer from launching its screen saver, going to sleep or entering power save mode. This unit ensures that your screen will always stay on, making it the perfect USB-C video adapter for any presentation or meeting. This unit is ideal for road warriors or anyone doing presentations. The unit installs quickly with no additional drivers or software required, and is compatible with a variety of operating systems, which I tested. USB-C to VGA Presentation Adapter

By: Starr - 10/24/2018
What a great idea. I have sat through so many presentations over the years where the presenter begins talking about a slide and stays on the topic so long that the laptop goes into screen saver mode or even sleep mode. This small device fixes that and provides a great resolution while doing that. No drivers necessary just plug and play.

Awesome Product!

By: Irfan - 11/05/2018
Excellent product - especially during the presentations or meetings. Small and very handy - Tv or external monitor, the display resolution is very good. The additional feature "Presentation mode feature " is a big plus. It really helped me in avoiding the screen locks /my computer power settings during the presentations. Overall very satisfied and a highly recommendable adapter.
