Overview

The R300WN22OP5E Outdoor Wireless Access Point lets you create or extend the range of a 5GHz Wireless-N (300Mbps) network to an outdoor location, letting your wireless devices connect to your network with enhanced reliability and speed, with less network congestion.

This wireless access point allows you to extend the range of your Wireless-N network to the outdoors

By isolating your wireless network to a 5GHz frequency, your dual-band smartphone, tablet or laptop operates with less interference from other devices on common 2.4GHz networks. For ideal wireless coverage across large outdoor areas, the access point integrates into your existing Wireless A/N or wired network to broadcast a WiFi SSID via a high-power 600mW internal 14dBi 2T2R directional antenna.

This PoE-powered access point includes a passive Power-over-Ethernet injector, so it can be conveniently installed in locations where a typical power outlet is unavailable.

Installation

You can use the R300WN22OP5 to create a wireless network for an existing wired network by setting it up in Access Point (AP) mode.

To set up the R300WN22OP5 in AP mode, you require the following:

  • A network infrastructure or network device that is TCP/IP compliant.
  • A computer with a wired Ethernet connection.
  • Two Ethernet patch cables.

If the R300WN22OP5 is not brand new or the settings were previously changed, you should complete a factory reset. For more information about how to complete a factory reset, refer to the following FAQ: https://www.startech.com/faq/networking_r300wn22op5_factory_reset.

To set up the R300WN22OP5 in AP mode, complete the steps under the three headings below.​

Connect the R300WN22OP5

  1. Remove the plastic panel from the bottom of the R300WN22OP5.
  2. Connect the provided power adapter to the POE injector.
  3. Connect an Ethernet patch cable to the POE injector and the R300WN22OP5. 
  4. If the R300WN22OP5 is not receiving power, move the Ethernet cable to the other RJ45 port.
  5. Connect an Ethernet cable to the LAN port on the POE injector and to your computer system.

Wait 30 seconds for the unit to finish restarting before you make any configuration changes.

Set your computer to the same network as the R300WN22OP5

The default IP address of the Access Point is 192.168.1.200, so the computer needs to have an address of 192.168.1.xxx where xxx is a number between 0 and 255, but not 200 (e.g. 192.168.1.1) or any other IP address in use.

Configure and restart the R300WN22OP5

Make sure that your computer is on the 192.168.1.xxx network, and complete the following:

  1. Open a web browser (for example, Internet Explorer).
  2. In the address bar, type http://192.168.1.200.
  3. In the username and password fields, type admin.
  4. Set the Mode to Access Point.
  5. Click the Setup icon or click Change Mode.
  6. If required, change any of the settings. 
  7. Set a Service Set Identifier (SSID). The SSID is the displayed name of the AP and is what you will connect to.
  8. To add wireless security (for example, WPA), beside Security Setting, click Setup. On the window that opens, change the encryption and add a password (or Pre-Shared Key) to your network.
  9. When you are done changing the settings, click Save & Restart.
  10. Set your computer back to the original IP configuration.
  11. Plug your existing wired network into the LAN port of the AP or POE injector.

You can use the R300WN22OP5 as a wireless router, which allows a Local Area Network (LAN) to access the Internet.

To set up the R300WN22OP5 as a wireless router, you require the following:

  • A modem from your Internet Service Provider (ISP) with an RJ-45 port.
  • A computer with a wired Ethernet connection.
  • Three Ethernet patch cables.

To set up the R300WN22OP5 as a wireless router, complete the steps under the three headings below.​

Connect the R300WN22OP5

  5. Click the Setup icon or click Change Mode.
  6. If required, change any of the settings.
  7. Set a Service Set Identifier (SSID). The SSID is the displayed name of the AP and is what you will connect to.
  8. To add wireless security (for example, WPA), beside Security Setting, click Setup. On the window that opens, change the encryption and add a password (or Pre-Shared Key) to your network.
  9. Click Setup to configure the settings for the WAN connection. You can get the necessary settings from your ISP. By default, the WAN Connection Type is set to DHCP (Auto Config), and this will work for most Cable modems. PPPoE is for ADSL modems, and you must get the Username and Password from your ISP.
  10. When you are done changing the settings, click Save & Restart.
  11. Set your computer back to the original IP configuration.
  12. Plug your existing wired network into the LAN port of the AP or POE injector.

Confirm that the unit is operating correctly

To check if the unit is operating correctly, do any of the following:

  • Connect your wireless device(s) to the router SSID and try to access the Internet.
  • Use the default IP address 192.168.1.200 to access the web configuration of the unit.

You can set up the R300WN22OP5 in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS).

Note: Only IP-based networks can be used with a WDS.

To set up the R300WN22OP5 in a WDS, complete the steps under the six headings below.​

Select an appropriate site to set up the unit

The maximum range of the R300WN22OP5 is 10 km, but obstructions (such as buildings) may reduce the range. The R300WN22OP5 can be used with multiple WDS-compatible APs (for example, additional R300WN22OP5 units) to overcome any physical barriers that may limit the Wi-Fi signal.

Connect the R300WN22OP5

  1. Remove the plastic panel from the bottom of the R300WN22OP5.
  2. Connect the provided power adapter to the POE injector.
  3. Connect an Ethernet patch cable to the POE injector and the R300WN22OP5.
  4. If the R300WN22OP5 is not receiving power, move the Ethernet cable to the other RJ45 port.
  5. Connect an Ethernet cable to the LAN port on the POE injector and to your computer system.

Wait 30 seconds for the unit to finish restarting before you make any configuration changes.

Set up the WDS Access Point

Make sure that your computer is on the 192.168.1.xxx network, and complete the following:

  1. Open a web browser (for example, Internet Explorer).
  2. In the address bar, type http://192.168.1.200.
  3. In the username and password fields, type admin.
  4. Set the Mode to WDS Access Point.
  5. Click Change Mode.
  6. When prompted, click OK.
  7. Under Network ID (SSID), enter the SSID of the Main Access Point.
  8. Leave the Radio Mode, Channel to the preset values.
  9. To add wireless security (for example, WPA), beside Security Setting, click Setup. On the window that opens, change the encryption and add a password (or Pre-Shared Key) to your network.
  10. When you are done changing the settings, click Save & Restart.

Change the IP address

When the WDS Access Point finishes restarting, complete the following:

  1. Open a web browser (for example, Internet Explorer).
  2. In the address bar, type http://192.168.1.200.
  3. In the username and password fields, type admin.
  4. Click System Configuration.
  5. Change the IP address to the value determined during site planning.
  6. When you are done changing the settings, click Save & Restart.

Note: To access the WDS Access Point, you may need to change the IP address on the computer.

Set up the WDS stations

  1. Connect the R300WN22OP5.
  2. Open a web browser (for example, Internet Explorer).
  3. In the address bar, type http://192.168.1.200.
  4. In the username and password fields, type admin.
  5. Change the Mode to WDS Station.
  6. Click Change Mode.
  7. When prompted, click OK.
  8. Click Site Survey.
  9. Click on the SSID of the WDS Access Point, and then click ASSOCIATE.
  10. If prompted, enter the security settings.
  11. When you are done changing the settings, click Save & Restart.
  12. Set your computer back to the original IP configuration.
  13. Plug your existing wired network into the LAN port of the AP or POE injector.

Confirm the connectivity of the WDS Station

To confirm the connectivity of the WDS Stations, complete the following:

  1. Click Device Status > Wireless Client Table
  2. Confirm that at least one MAC address that belongs to the WDS Station is listed in the table.

Note: The MAC address is listed on a sticker located at the back of the R300WN22OP5.

Troubleshooting

This device's default static IP address is 192.168.1.200.

  1. Make sure that the R300WN22OP5 is on the same network as your computer.
  2. In an Internet browser, enter the IP address of the unit. The default IP address is 192.168.1.200.
  3. In the user name field, enter the user name. The default user name is admin.
  4. In the password field, enter the password. The default password is admin.

To restore your wireless access point to the default factory settings, use a pen or pointed device to press and hold the reset button for 10 seconds.
