Course 5: DisplayPort

Chapter 5: The Future of DisplayPort, DisplayPort 1.2

In order to increase resolutions, raise refresh rates, and improve color depth, a future 1.2 version of DisplayPort is planned to feature twice the amount of bandwidth of the current version. The DisplayPort 1.2 standard will be completely backward compatible with the existing DisplayPort standard.

DisplayPort 1.2 will be capable of supporting a single monitor display at a 3840 x 2160 resolution, two monitor displays at 2560 x 1600 resolutions, or four monitor displays at 1920 x 1200 resolutions. DisplayPort 1.2 will also have audio capabilities beyond 120 Hz 3D stereo.

Currently, DisplayPort is expected to dominate the PC market by the year 2010; speculation has been made that DisplayPort may be used for internal connections within TVs as early as the 2009 calendar year. Likewise, DisplayPort-enabled devices are projected to grow at an annual rate of 243% from the years 2008 to 20122, with rough estimates putting DisplayPort’s 2010 adoption level at 50% of desktop PCs and about 45% of laptops.
