USB Extension

The term USB extension applies to the ability to extend USB signals further than would be typically be allowed using standard USB cables. USB extension can be performed in a variety of ways:

USB extension cables come in many different lengths; they have both a female and male connection. Short USB extension cables are often used to connect USB devices to a laptop or desktop when the USB ports are too close to each other to use multiple devices. Longer USB cables are used to connect USB devices to a computer when the devices are a great distance away from your system.

A USB extender is a device that boosts a USB signal to different lengths which is dependant upon the amount of boost provided by the device. USB extenders can boost USB signals from 50 meters (165 feet) up to 500 meters (1640 feet).
