Overview
The USB-C to VGA adapter lets you connect a USB-C laptop, such as your Macbook or MacBook Pro, to a VGA display. The video adapter features USB Power Delivery, which enables you to power your laptop while you're outputting video to a VGA display.
USB Type-C is a universal connectivity standard that combines all of your essential functions into one dynamic port. This adapter works with USB-C devices that pass a DisplayPort video signal, such as the MacBook and Chromebook Pixel™. It's also compatible with Thunderbolt™ 3 ports.
The perfect travel companion for your MacBook with USB-C
With its all-white design and support for USB Power Delivery, this USB-C video adapter is the perfect accessory for your USB-C equipped MacBook. The adapter is compact and lightweight, so it fits easily into your MacBook bag or carrying case, which is great for BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) applications at the office.
While the adapter looks great next to your MacBook or HP® ENVY, it also works with any USB-C computer that supports DisplayPort ALT mode, such as your Windows® laptop.
Charges your laptop
Unlike some video adapters that take up your laptop’s USB-C charge port while you're outputting video and prevent you from charging your computer, this video adapter features an additional USB-C port dedicated to USB Power Delivery. This means you can charge your laptop, even while outputting video, by simply connecting the laptop’s power adapter to the additional port. It’s the perfect solution for laptops that only have a single USB-C port.
Promotes portability
This USB Type-C video adapter maximizes portability with a lightweight, small-footprint design. It’s the perfect accessory to carry with your MacBook or Chromebook, fitting easily into your laptop bag or carrying case. Its ultra-portable design makes this adapter perfect for BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) applications at the office.
Connects easily
This adapter lets you utilize the versatile USB Type-C port on your portable device. USB Type-C is a reversible connector, so no matter how you plug it in, the adapter will always connect, saving you the hassle and embarrassment of struggling with your device when you're trying to deliver a presentation or share information.
Maintains crystal-clear picture quality
With support for video resolutions up to 1920x1200 or 1080p, you’ll be surprised at the picture quality the adapter provides, even when connected to a legacy VGA monitor, projector or television. The adapter harnesses the video capabilities built into your USB-C connection to deliver every detail in stunning high-definition.
The CDP2VGAUCPW is backed by a 2-year StarTech.com warranty and free lifetime technical support.
Applications
Charge your USB Type-C laptop and output video using the same USB-C port
Carry the adapter with you when you travel, and connect to any VGA TV, monitor or projector

Frequently Asked Questions
Before You Buy
USB-C is a type of USB connector that is capable of supporting the following:
- Data transfer speeds up to 10Gbps, if you use USB 3.1.
- Bi-directional power delivery up to 100W, if both the USB host connection and the device support it.
- Alternate modes, which deliver different types of data at different speeds. For example, DisplayPort Alternate Mode (DP Alt Mode).
If using Thunderbolt 3 over USB-C, the connection is capable of additional features. For example, Thunderbolt 3 is capable of 40Gbps of total bandwidth. For more information, refer to the following FAQ: https://www.startech.com/faq/thunderbolt-3-port-capabilities.
Not all USB-C ports or devices are capable of supporting all of the features listed above, or all of the features at the maximum capabilities. If you require a specific USB-C feature, your USB host connection, cables, and device must all support the feature that you require. For more information about whether your components support specific USB-C features, refer to the information provided by the manufacturers.

Troubleshooting
When you troubleshoot issues with a video adapter, there are some quick tests that you can complete to rule out potential problems. You can test to make sure that the following components are working correctly and are not the source of the issue:
-
Video cables
-
Video adapter
-
Video source (such as a DVD player or computer)
-
Video destination (such as a monitor or projector)
To test your setup components, try the following:
-
Use the cable, video adapter, video source, and video destination in another setup to see if the problem is with the components or the setup.
-
Use a different cable, video adapter, video source, and video destination in your setup to see if the problem persists. Ideally, you should test a component that you know works in another setup.
When you test your cables, it is recommended that you do the following:
-
Test each cable individually.
-
Use short cables when you are testing.
When you test the video source and video destination, it is recommended that you do the following:
-
Remove the video adapter from your setup and test to make sure that the video source and video destination work together without the video adapter.
-
Test to make sure that the video source and video destination work together at the resolution that you want to use.
Note: In order for your setup to work properly, the video source, adapter, and destination all need to support the resolution that you are using.

Your laptop might not support Power Delivery or might have specific charging requirements. For example, if your laptop requires exactly 60W of power and an adapter consumes some of the 60W, your laptop might not recognize that it is getting enough power.
For more information about Power Delivery, refer to the manufacturer of your hardware.
