It’s the perfect accessory to carry with your MacBook or Chromebook, fitting easily into your laptop bag or carrying case. Its ultra-portable design makes this adapter perfect for BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) applications at the office.

Connects easily

This adapter lets you utilize the versatile USB Type-C port on your portable device. USB Type-C is a reversible connector, so no matter how you plug it in, the adapter will always connect.  This saves you the hassle and embarrassment of struggling with your device when you're trying to deliver a presentation or share information.

Maintains astonishing picture quality

At four times the resolution of high-definition 1080p, you’ll be amazed at the picture quality of a 4K monitor or television. The adapter lets you harness the video capabilities that are built into your USB Type-C connection to deliver the astonishing quality of Ultra HD to your 4K display. 4K resolution gives you additional screen space to simplify your approach to detailed work such as editing video and viewing large spreadsheets.

Even if you're not running 4K, the adapter supports high-definition 1080p and lower resolutions, which gives you peace of mind in knowing that this adapter will work with any HDMI video display you need to connect to.

Troubleshooting

When you troubleshoot issues with a USB video adapter, there are some quick tests that you can complete to rule out potential problems. You can test to make sure that the following components are working correctly and are not the source of the issue:

  • Video cables

  • Video source

  • Video destination

  • USB video adapter

To test your setup components, try the following:

  • Use the video cables, video source, video destination, and USB video adapter in another setup to see if the problem is with the components or the setup.

  • Use a different video cable, video source, video destination, and USB video adapter in your setup to see if the problem persists. Ideally, you should test a component that you know works in another setup.

When you test your cables, it is recommended that you do the following:

  • Test each cable individually.

  • Use short cables when you are testing.

When you test the video cables, video source, video destination, and USB video adapter, it is recommended that you do the following:

  • Check Device Manager under Display adapters, Universal Serial Bus controllers, or USB Display adapters. To do this, press the Windows key + R, type devmgmt.msc, and press Enter to open Device Manager.

  • If you do not see the USB video adapter in Device Manager, refer to the following FAQ: https://www.startech.com/support/faqs/technical-support?topic=expansion-cards#usb-cannot-detect-windows.

  • If the device is listed with an error, reinstall the drivers following the instructions on the website.

  • Check to see if your video card drivers are current. You can check what video card you have in Device Manager under Display adapters. It is recommended that you go directly to the video card manufacturer's website to check for the latest drivers.

  • Check to see if the monitor is being detected by Windows.

To check to see if Windows is detecting the monitor using a computer that is running a version of Windows XP, do the following:

  • Right-click on the desktop and click Properties.
  • Click the Settings tab.
  • If you see Drag the monitor icons to match the physical arrangement of your monitors, it means that Windows is detecting more than a single monitor. You can click the drop-down menu under Display to see which monitors are detected. This option is not available if Windows only detects a single monitor.

To check to see if Windows is detecting the monitor using a computer that is running a version of Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8, do the following:

  • Right-click on the desktop and click Screen Resolution.
  • You can click the drop-down menu under Display to see which monitors are detected.

Your laptop might not support Power Delivery or might have specific charging requirements. For example, if your laptop requires exactly 60W of power and an adapter consumes some of the 60W, your laptop might not recognize that it is getting enough power.

For more information about Power Delivery, refer to the manufacturer of your hardware.

Before You Buy

USB-C is a type of USB connector that is capable of supporting the following:

  • Data transfer speeds up to 10Gbps, if you use USB 3.1.
  • Bi-directional power delivery up to 100W, if both the USB host connection and the device support it.
  • Alternate modes, which deliver different types of data at different speeds. For example, DisplayPort Alternate Mode (DP Alt Mode).

If using Thunderbolt 3 over USB-C, the connection is capable of additional features. For example, Thunderbolt 3 is capable of 40Gbps of total bandwidth. For more information, refer to the following FAQ: https://www.startech.com/faq/thunderbolt-3-port-capabilities.

Not all USB-C ports or devices are capable of supporting all of the features listed above, or all of the features at the maximum capabilities. If you require a specific USB-C feature, your USB host connection, cables, and device must all support the feature that you require. For more information about whether your components support specific USB-C features, refer to the information provided by the manufacturers.

This USB-C device requires that all of the following components support alternate modes:

  • The USB-C host connection (for example, a computer and its port)
  • The USB-C cable
  • The USB-C device (for example, a hard drive docking station)

If your host device includes a Thunderbolt™ 3 connection, this USB-C device will work with your host device.

For more information about the modes that your setup components support, refer to the information provided by the manufacturers.

To use all of the features of this USB-C device, it is required that all of the following components support USB Power Delivery 2.0 and DisplayPort Alternate Mode:

  • The USB-C host connection.
  • The USB-C cable.
  • The USB-C device (for example, a hard drive docking station).

To check how much power this device requires, visit the product page, and look on the Technical Specifications tab.

For more information about the power delivery capabilities of your other components, refer to the information provided by the manufacturers.

What else needs to be said about a single-purpose adapter? It works. No drivers needed, no convoluted setups. Macbook Pro driving a 4K monitor via HDMI. Plug it in and it just works (tested on Dell and Macboo Pro). Having power pass-through is nice as it saves a port on the laptop as well. My only critique on this, is that the power adapter should be on the same end as the HDMI, or at least on the side. Having it on the same side as the USB connector creates an odd "flow" to the cables, versus everything being in a nice straight line. I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.

Use an external display without losing a port!

By: sgto416 - 07/14/2017
I am now able to display to an external source and still have a usb c port free which helps be cut down on the amount of cables I need to carry with me while I am on the road. As the previous reviewer said the usb c port is in an awkward place BUT being so compact I am not so sure if there would be another place. The display is great and being HDMI I can use any TV & most monitors - this will be in my laptop bag wherever I go. I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.

Great little adaptor

By: NickD_CA17 - 07/22/2017
I have used this USB to HDMI with several devices for a few weeks and I like how quick and easy it connects. The adaptor comes in a large box, you would expect a PCI card in. You could almost fit ten of these adaptors in the package. There are no instructions but it is pretty straight forward and doesn't need them. The dongle itself is a good size, slightly shorter than the length of my hand. When connected to a phone or computer it is immediately detected and starts working within 30 seconds. I can use it with just the HDMI connected (no power) for short presentations where I don't need to charge my device. I can also connect USB-C power to the adaptor so that it passes through the power and charges my device while connected. This is a great little adaptor that works very well and quickly. I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.
