Installation

Starting in High Sierra 10.13, macOS enforces stricter security policies than previous revisions. As a result of these changes, software packages, like those used in this installation, will need to be allowed within the macOS Security and Privacy settings, immediately after the software has been installed, in order for the device to operate.

To allow the software, follow these steps after you've completed installation on your Mac:

  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Open Security & Privacy.
  3. Click the Allow button near the bottom of the General tab.

Note: The option to allow the software will be available within the Security & Privacy settings for 30 minutes. If the software is not allowed within that time frame, the software must be reinstalled in order for macOS to grant the opportunity to allow it again.

Troubleshooting

Computers running macOS Catalina (10.15) may experience compatibility issues with products that use DisplayLink technology, such as USB Docking Stations and Video Adapters. Connecting to a DisplayLink-powered Product may cause the Display(s) to output a blank screen. If you experience this problem, follow these steps:

  1. Update computer to the latest version of macOS 10.15
  2. Permit Screen Recording by following these steps: macOS Catalina 10.15: Screen Recording permission (external link)
  3. Enable the DisplayLink Kernel Extension by following these steps: macOS 10.13, 10.14 and 10.15: Video functionality not enabled (external link)
  4. If the problem persists, try installing the DisplayLink Manager Application (external link). Be sure to run the application after installation and select “Launch automatically after logging-in” for it to start automatically every time you log-in.

If the display connected through your USB display adapter does not wake up after your computer has been in extended hibernation, it is likely that Windows has automatically turned off the USB Root hub to save power.

The steps below outline how to configure the USB root hub to stay on during hibernation, to prevent this from happening.

When you troubleshoot issues with a laptop docking station, there are some quick tests that you can complete to rule out potential problems. You can test to make sure that the following components are working correctly and are not the source of the issue:

  • Video cables

  • Video source

  • Video destination

  • Laptop docking station

  • USB peripherals

  • Ethernet connection

To test your setup components, try the following:

  • Use the video cables, video source, video destination, laptop docking station, USB peripherals, and Ethernet connection in another setup to see if the problem is with the components or the setup.

  • Use a different video cable, video source, video destination, laptop docking station, USB peripherals, and Ethernet connection setup to see if the problem persists. Ideally, you should test a component that you know works in another setup.

When you test your cables, it is recommended that you do the following:

  • Test each cable individually.

  • Use short cables when you are testing.

When you test the video cables, video source, video destination, and laptop docking station it is recommended that you do the following:

Before You Buy

Digital Visual Interface (DVI) is a video display interface that can contain different types of signaling, based on the application. DVI cables and ports are created using different connector types to identify what application they are intended to be used in. The connector types are identified by the number of pins on the DVI connector. DVI comes in the following five different connector types:

Single and Dual link DVI indicate the maximum resolution capabilities of the video source or video destination. The maximum resolutions are Single Link (1920 x 1080 @ 60Hz) and Dual Link (2560 x 1600 @ 60Hz).

Note: The maximum resolution of your video source and video destination are ultimately determined by the technical specifications of the devices. The connector type is not a definitive indicator of the maximum resolution.

DVI-A carries only analog (for example, VGA) with no digital component. DVI-D carries only digital video (for example, HDMI) with no analog component. DVI-I combines DVI-A and DVI-D connections to include both analog and digital components. A DVI-I port may be on either your video source or display, but whether or not a display carries either or both analog and digital sources depends on the technical specifications of your device.

No, you cannot use this docking station to charge a connected laptop computer.

To see a list of laptop docking stations that can charge a connected laptop, refer to the following FAQ: https://www.startech.com/faq/laptop-docking-stations-will-charge-laptop.

Works Seemlessly

By: Catherine - 03/16/2015
My first experience with Startech was using their 2.0 USB docking station, which caused problems when trying fix the external monitor resolution. I had gone back to Startech and got support from their online help team, who has always been great in handling my questions. They were able to identify a resolution compatibility issue and suggested using the new 3.0 dock. I went along with the suggestion and tried the 3.0 USB dock..... and it is working great! It's been working for about a month now, no problems with resolution, no problems with connecting all the other various peripheries for the work station. I would highly recommend this dock to anyone looking for a simple, and sleek solution to their office or home working station. Next time I need a docking station, I will be getting this one from Startech as it is working perfectly!

Great docking station.

By: Jimbo - 10/31/2017
I have purchased five docking station in the past few months. Each one was a plug and play install. Systems work great. There is a small issue with one unit not connecting to the ethernet. I'm sure it's a minor issue and can be easily corrected when I have time to get to units location. All in all, if I need more units I will be ordering them from you guys.

Audio quality

By: SuAu77 - 11/04/2017
I have this dock for more than a year. It works ok. Time to time displaylink software get out date and requires updates. Audio capabilities ( Speak Sound and Mic) are sub par and almost useless. I have to use either laptop's mic or external Bluetooth mic.

Thanks for sharing your review of our USB3SDOCKHDV. We're very sorry that the audio quality was underwhelming. Did you find this was the case when using the 3.5mm jacks or with the HDMI port as well? We typically find the quality is very respectable so perhaps your docking station is faulty. We would like to help the best we can. Feel free to chat with one of our Technical Advisors at chat.startech.com.

Works great minus one problem

By: DeeDee - 04/25/2018
Bought this device for two work computers. Works very well, easy to install if you follow instructions. Took some fiddling around with monitor brightness/contrast settings to get it right but the picture is great now. Only one problem I'm experiencing with both setups is the keyboard/mouse lags. When connected through the dock, my Microsoft wireless keyboard/mouse combo lags quite a bit and I'm not able to use it that way. I've had to revert back to plugging that directly into the laptop, which sort of defeats the purpose of the dock as I now have zero available USB ports on my laptop. If anyone has a solution for this it would be greatly appreciated!

Mostly works, but freezes once day

By: Leapy99 - 05/20/2018
I have 4 of these docking stations for our small business. The docking stations are generally good and work fine. However, overtime I am noticing that the docking stations are starting to freeze about once per day. The only way of fixing this is to unplug the docking station and plug it back in or restart the computer. Both of which are annoying. Also the S/N I have for the product does not match anything in Startech's database making it difficult to get support. Hopefully they will contact me when they see this review...

Great functionality but kiling CPU usage

By: PDJ4ck - 05/24/2018
I've tried a number of different docks and this is one of the best available, but it has caused significantly increased CPU usage to the extent that multi-tasking ability is constrained.

USB Devices Keep Dropping

By: Sylb - 01/07/2019
Connecting Docking station to monitor, wired keyboard, wireless mouse and printer via a StarTech switch SV231DDVDUA (2 Port DVI VGA Dual Monitor KVM Switch USB with Audio & USB 2.0 Hub) with StarTech cables. On initial connection everything works through the dock, but after several minutes the keyboard, mouse and printer drop (USB Device Failures). Video stays connect with 1 monitor via DVI connection. Tried loading set-up software from site rather than disk provided and different USB ports, but same results. Another manufacturers docking station work fine with the switch. We're sorry that the combination of products has not worked as expected. This combination of devices will work together but it is a more complex configuration. You will need to use the HDMI and VGA video ports on the dock as VGA and DVI cannot be used at the same time with this model If you are using a wireless or gaming keyboard and mouse, we suggest connecting those devices to the 2 USB hub ports on the KVM switch. We would be happy to go through the configuration and discuss some troubleshooting steps with you. MacBook Air 2015 IOS 10.14.6 - Rock Solid

By: CLinChicago - 12/02/2019
I'm not going to write a lengthy review, other than to say this device is rock solid on my MacBook Air. Easy to follow instructions on their website re: install. I did have one small issue (my fault) and I called support. Support, in Ohio USA, answered on the 3rd ring. Solved it VERY quickly. I've been using this 6 months, and again, it's rock solid.

Slightly annoying

By: Linney - 01/24/2020
Just set this Docking Station up, windows 10 machine and two screen, DVI and HDMI. Works fine other than a pause occasionally, meaning I have to wait for the the machine to catch up. never had this problem with my machine prior to this.....any advice?

Thank you for sharing your experience with our USB3SDOCKHDV. We apologize for the difficulties you're having and want to assure you that this dock should not pause while you're using it. If the pauses happen when using specific software, we recommend looking to see if that software uses Hardware Acceleration and disabling that if possible. If this is happening across all software then we'd like to speak with you further to help isolate what is causing this so that we can fix this for you. Our Technical Advisors are available 24 hours a day, 5 days a week and you can reach us at www.startech.com/uk/support.

Works almost as expected

By: RNM78 - 03/24/2020
I bought this a while back to work from home. I have an external LG monitor, external wireless keyboard and external wireless mouse. The monitor worked once while connected to the dock. The keyboard and mouse work fine. Ethernet does not work, so that along with the monitor is disappointing.

It works!

I had trouble getting this device to work with my Surface Pro 4 using the regular setup files on Windows 10. I downloaded and used the Corporate MSI files instead (64 bit) and now everything is working! Very happy camper. Can't wait to try it on my other devices.
