Troubleshooting

When you troubleshoot issues with a laptop docking station, there are some quick tests that you can complete to rule out potential problems. You can test to make sure that the following components are working correctly and are not the source of the issue:

  • Video cables

  • Video source

  • Video destination

  • Laptop docking station

  • USB peripherals

  • Ethernet connection

To test your setup components, try the following:

  • Use the video cables, video source, video destination, laptop docking station, USB peripherals, and Ethernet connection in another setup to see if the problem is with the components or the setup.

  • Use a different video cable, video source, video destination, laptop docking station, USB peripherals, and Ethernet connection setup to see if the problem persists. Ideally, you should test a component that you know works in another setup.

When you test your cables, it is recommended that you do the following:

  • Test each cable individually.

  • Use short cables when you are testing.

When you test the video cables, video source, video destination, and laptop docking station it is recommended that you do the following:

  1. Press the Windows key + R, type devmgmt.msc, and press Enter to open Device Manager.

  2. If you do not see the USB video adapter in Device Manager, refer to the following FAQ: https://www.startech.com/support/faqs/technical-support?topic=expansion-cards#usb-cannot-detect-windows.

  3. If the device is listed with an error, reinstall the drivers following the instructions on the website.

  4. Check to see if your video card drivers are current. You can check what video card you have in Device Manager under Display adapters. It is recommended that you go directly to the video card manufacturer's website to check for the latest drivers.

  5. Check to see if the monitor is being detected by Windows.

For more information about testing the USB peripherals and the laptop docking station, visit www.startech.com/faq/usb_hubs_general_troubleshooting.

When you test Ethernet and the laptop docking station, refer to the following FAQ: http://www.startech.com/faq/network_adapters_general_troubleshooting.

When you test sound and the laptop docking station, refer to the following FAQ: http://www.startech.com/faq/sound_cards_general_troubleshooting.

Your laptop might not support Power Delivery or might have specific charging requirements. For example, if your laptop requires exactly 60W of power and an adapter consumes some of the 60W, your laptop might not recognize that it is getting enough power.

For more information about Power Delivery, refer to the manufacturer of your hardware.

If you disconnect a USB-C power adapter from the multiport adapter while transferring files to or from an attached storage device, it will stop the transfer and may cause file corruption. It is also possible that there will be a loss of function if the power adapter is removed from the adapter while it is in operation. It is important to always follow the disconnection steps listed below.

To discontinue charging the multiport adapter and/or to disconnect an SD card from the device, complete the following:

  1. Complete all data transfers over USB to and from the SD card.
  2. Disconnect the adapter from the host laptop.
  3. Disconnect your laptop’s power adapter from the adapter.
  4. Disconnect the HDMI connector, eject SD card and disconnect any USB peripherals as required.

Before You Buy

USB-C is a type of USB connector that is capable of supporting the following:

  • Data transfer speeds up to 10Gbps, if you use USB 3.1.
  • Bi-directional power delivery up to 100W, if both the USB host connection and the device support it.
  • Alternate modes, which deliver different types of data at different speeds. For example, DisplayPort Alternate Mode (DP Alt Mode).

If using Thunderbolt 3 over USB-C, the connection is capable of additional features. For example, Thunderbolt 3 is capable of 40Gbps of total bandwidth. For more information, refer to the following FAQ: https://www.startech.com/faq/thunderbolt-3-port-capabilities.

Not all USB-C ports or devices are capable of supporting all of the features listed above, or all of the features at the maximum capabilities. If you require a specific USB-C feature, your USB host connection, cables, and device must all support the feature that you require. For more information about whether your components support specific USB-C features, refer to the information provided by the manufacturers.

This USB-C device requires that all of the following components support alternate modes:

  • The USB-C host connection (for example, a computer and its port)
  • The USB-C cable
  • The USB-C device (for example, a hard drive docking station)

If your host device includes a Thunderbolt™ 3 connection, this USB-C device will work with your host device.

For more information about the modes that your setup components support, refer to the information provided by the manufacturers.

To use all of the features of this USB-C device, it is required that all of the following components support USB Power Delivery 2.0 and DisplayPort Alternate Mode:

  • The USB-C host connection.
  • The USB-C cable.
  • The USB-C device (for example, a hard drive docking station).

To check how much power this device requires, visit the product page, and look on the Technical Specifications tab.

For more information about the power delivery capabilities of your other components, refer to the information provided by the manufacturers.

Great portable dock replacement

By: morty - 09/12/2017
I chose this product because when I need to travel, there is no way I want to carry around my normal docking station which weighs a lot. Since many smaller laptops these days only come with a handful of ports or just USB-C ports, this product comes in handy to give you back the most important and most used ports. It also allows me to hook up to a board room projector with the DVI port where I can't otherwise. It worked plug-and-play and I didn't have to install any drivers. I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.

Great to use while on the road!

By: sgto416 - 09/13/2017
The DKT30CDVPD USB-C to DVI Multiport adapteris fantastic for expanding the use of a laptop while on the road! It has a USB 3.0 Type-A, gigabit RJ45, DVI, USB-C port DC power input only as well as the USB-C host laptop connector. I would also buy dvi converter cables from Startech.com (dvi to displayport, etc.) to make the ultimate travel companion! I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review

That moment you realize this is a Docking Station

By: William G Ryan - 09/15/2017
I received this product in exchange for an impartial review. I chose this product b/c I travel a lot and ALWAYS find myself running short on USB ports. Unless I have a long time to pack I invariably leave something and it's a headache. Hotels will try to accommodate you, but their built in peripherals are very inflexible. Bringing a docking station with you has many problems. They are big, the better ones , particularly laptop specific ones, are really big, somewhat heavy and expensive. Anything that expensive makes for a really bad travel product b/c things get left at hotels, take a beating and move around a lot. With all that wear anything delicate will get damaged and break. This on the other hand is very light. It's light and strong. Size wise, the box is no bigger than a small graphics card or wifi card. The Hub itself isn't much bigger than a cell phone. The fact it's light is very helpful b/c you can travel with it, without it adding weight or bulk. It's strong enough that it can easily withstand a drop or 5 and its small enough you can pack it anywhere. One of my biggest issues with any hub is how well things fit into it. Too tight and you have to force things (which is a recipe for disaster) too lose and things well move around and either break or break parts inside the hub. StarTech's product line always delivers in terms of craftsmanship and build and this hub exemplifies it. All in all this is a docking station that masquerades as a hub. Its a great product, a great value and honestly, I don't think I could name anything it could do better let alone find something to criticize.
