Installation

Starting in High Sierra 10.13, macOS enforces stricter security policies than previous revisions. As a result of these changes, software packages, like those used in this installation, will need to be allowed within the macOS Security and Privacy settings, immediately after the software has been installed, in order for the device to operate.

To allow the software, follow these steps after you've completed installation on your Mac:

  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Open Security & Privacy.
  3. Click the Allow button near the bottom of the General tab.

Note: The option to allow the software will be available within the Security & Privacy settings for 30 minutes. If the software is not allowed within that time frame, the software must be reinstalled in order for macOS to grant the opportunity to allow it again.

In order to view the computer connected to the laptop crash cart adapter, you must install the software package either from the USB stick or StarTech.com website. The software must be installed prior to using the device on your computer.

Hardware requirements

You require the following components in your hardware setup:

  • A host computer with a female VGA and USB ports. This is the computer that will be controlled.
  • A client computer running Windows with an available USB port. This computer will control the host computer.

Install the software

Drivers and software must be installed on the client computer before you connect the components. To install the software, complete the following:

  1. Download the latest drivers from the StarTech.com website (http://www.startech.com/Support). You can find the part number and product ID on the product packaging.

Note: Windows typically saves the files to the Downloads folder that is associated with your user account (for example, C:\Users\your_name\Downloads).

  1. When the download is complete, right-click the zip folder that you downloaded, click Extract All, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  2. In the list of extracted files, navigate to the Windows folder, right-click the Setup.exe file and click Run as Administrator.

Note: If the Run as Administrator option is not available, you might be attempting to run the installer from within the zipped file. Extract the files using the instructions in step 2.

  1. Follow the on-screen prompts to install the device drivers and software.

Install the hardware

  1. Connect the USB and VGA cables from the crash cart adapter to the host computer.
  2. Connect the mini USB cable to the crash cart adapter and the client computer.

Plug in the crash cart adapter and run the USB Crash Cart software. The software automatically detects the settings of the connected computer and shows the display from the computer. When you move the mouse cursor to the display, the keyboard and mouse control is redirected from the client to the host computer.

Before you install the device, make sure that your operating system is current (for example, the most recent service pack is installed).

  1. Download the latest drivers from the StarTech.com website at www.startech.com/Support. The part number and product ID are on the product packaging.

Note: Windows usually saves the files to the Downloads folder that is associated with your user account (for example, C:\Documents and Settings\your_name\My Documents\Downloads).

  1. After the download is complete, right-click the zip folder that you downloaded, click Extract All, and complete the instructions.
  2. In the list of extracted files, double-click the setup.exe file.
  3. Complete the instructions to install the device drivers, and restart your computer when prompted to.
  4. After your computer restarts, connect the USB crash cart adapter to your computer.

Your device should be ready to use.

In order to view the computer connected to the KVM console adapter, you must install the software package either from the USB stick or the StarTech.com website. The software must be installed prior to using the device on your computer. To install the software, do the following:

  1. Download the latest drivers from the StarTech.com website (http://www.startech.com/Support). You can find the part number and product ID on the product’s packaging.

Note: Mac OS X will typically save the files to the Downloads folder that is associated with your user account (for example,hard_drive_name\Users\your_name\Downloads).

  1. Double-click the Software Pack.zip file.
  2. Double-click the Mac folder.
  3. Double-click the Install.dmg file.
  4. Double-click USB Crash Cart Adapter.

The program is now located on the desktop and is ready to run.

Troubleshooting

Monitors may begin flickering when they receive a signal of insufficient quality. There are a few potential fixes available that will help to improve the signal quality in order to eliminate flickering:

  • Replace Video Cables with high-quality Video Cables (e.g. upgrade DisplayPort 1.2 Cables to DisplayPort 1.4 Cables).
  • Use shorter Video Cables to reduce signal attenuation.
  • When possible, remove Video Adapters to use native Video Connection Types (e.g. go from VGA to VGA, or DisplayPort to DisplayPort)
  • For DisplayPort Monitors, try changing the DisplayPort Version on the Monitor. For information on how to change your Monitor Settings refer to the Manual from the Monitor Manufacturer.
  • Update the Drivers for the Computer’s GPU to the latest available from the Monitor Manufacturer.

  • Videokabels
  • Videobron
  • Computersysteem
  • USB crash cart adapter

  • Test elke kabel afzonderlijk.
  • Gebruik kortere kabels.

You can use the USB crash cart adapter software to capture video. Videos taken on the attached host computer are saved on the client computer that's running the USB crash cart software.

Note: When you record videos, the file transfer feature is temporarily blocked.

To record videos, complete the following:

  1. In the USB crash card adapter software, click the record button.
  2. Specify the location where you want to save the files.
  3. Specify how long you want to record for in seconds.

If the video works on your client computer but the keyboard or mouse is not working with your laptop crash cart adapter, try the following:

  • Make sure that the USB cable on the laptop crash cart adapter is firmly connected to the host computer.
  • If you're using multiple monitors with the host computer, make sure that the VGA cable connected to the laptop crash cart adapter is connected to the primary monitor.
  • Under Keyboard, change the Active emulation type to PS/2.

How To

To confirm that Windows detects your USB device, complete the following:

  1. Press the Windows key+R, type devmgmt.msc, and press Enter.
  2. In Device Manager, under the appropriate heading, confirm that your expansion card is listed and that there isn't an exclamation mark next to it.  For example, a USB controller card would be under Universal Serial Bus controllers.

Your USB device is listed according to the name of the chipset. To determine the name of the chipset of your USB device, navigate to www.StarTech.com and look on the Technical Specifications tab for your product.

Very good, could be great.

By: jamestalmage - 06/09/2018
This does work on Max OSX 10.12. Install was fairly painless. In general, it does the job, but there are issues. On the hardware side, my only gripe is the dongles. Those seem liable prone to damage. I would have preferred a female vga and USB jacks and extension coords. I recommend buying a protective case for this investment. The software works, but there are annoyances. My biggest complaint is the tendency of the keyboard emulator to frequently type multiple characters. It happens randomly. Sometimes even with the very quickest of button presses. Worst, it can happen when you hit the return key - so you might accidentally accept multiple dialog window defaults during operating system setup. This issue is the only one that really bothers me. As is, I wouldn't want to use this for very long. Just enough to get things to the point where I can remote in via SSH or Remote Desktop. I wouldn't want to use it to do a full OS install/reinstall. The screen scaling could be better for retina displays. You can't really get it to scale to fill the screen (vertically or horizontally). What scaling options there are, are not intuitive. In general, the whole toolbar at the top feels unintuitive. The icon choices often reinvent the wheel, instead of using standard icons ("settings" icon should be a gear, "drive control" should look like a CD, etc). Disappointing, but not a deal breaker. There also seems to be some sort of jitter on the display. It's constantly shifting up and down. It's just a few pixels worth of movement, so it's usable, but it's another thing that would discourage me from using it any longer than I had to. On a positive note, the file transfer appears to work awesome. You can even connect bootable ISO's, so installing an OS, or running a recovery CD should work great. I am very happy about this. In all, it's a great concept, and it definitely "just works". They could do a lot to make the experience better. There are other cheaper products that do the same thing. I spent the money mainly because this is the only Mac compatible one, but I was hoping the extra money would also mean a more polished user experience. I will definitely be keeping mine, but I hope they can improve some of these things (especially the keyboard issue) in a software update.

Linux client works well

By: DatacenterAdmin - 04/14/2019
I have used this adapter quite a few times now and it is far more convenient than lugging around a monitor and keyboard! I am extremely pleased that there is a client for Linux and can confirm that it works. This was one of the reasons we chose this particular model over the competition.

We have a number of Computers in Fire stations and servers that do not have a mouse, keyboard, o r monitor attached and we use these to service them. The one problem I have had is with the file transfer I cannot seem to get it to work. I still must carry a usb drive for that.

Surprises - Good and Bad

By: Wolf - 06/05/2020
I just bought this adapter, because I thought it would facilitate supporting headless servers and SBCs (Raspberry Pi) while just carrying my usual notebook. The vast majority of the machines I use run Linux, with the occasional macOS and Windows box thrown in. Therefore Linux support on the host is of prime importance to me. Now for the experience: Installing the software on Ubuntu 20.04 works without issues, as long as you download the latest version from the support page - the version delivered on the USB stick is useless, as it includes a libz.so that is vastly out of date and crashes the program right away. Running the program works as advertised - the rendering of the screen is surprisingly crisp and the speed is also ok, as long as you don't have too many 3d effects enabled. Most definitely better than I expected from previous use of other devices. Also: Using a HDMI to VGA Adapter works for attaching to newer boxes - well done! Now for the downside: Being based in Switzerland all of my equipment uses keyboards with the Swiss layout - no US keyboards on any notebook here - and that *completely* fails to work! Letter and number keys work ok, but frequently used special characters like "/", "\", "|", "~", "`", "[", "{" a.s.o. cannot be entered at all (they require a working "AltGr" key, which is missing) - and, because there is no support for copy&paste between the host and the target system and the keyboard layout configured in the host OS is almost completely ignored, there is no workaround available. FAIL! I only noticed the warning that the only supported Keyboard for Linux is the US layout while searching for a workaround for my problem, but it's not only the layout, it's the *physical* keyboard that needs have the US layout! As the Windows software does not seem to have the same restriction, I booted up one of the few laptops that run Windows10, hoping that this would save the day - but, alas, although there are slightly more keys that work (e.g. "/"), the "AltGr" key is not among them, so still no way to enter any of the commonly used characters. Again: the layout configured in the OS only seems to marginally matter. So: Looks like I'm stuck with a device I cannot fully use for lack of keyboard support :-( BTW: I'm also a software developer and noticed that the application seems to be implemented in Python2 + wxWidgets (+ probably some C/C++ code for the video handling). Any chance that I could lay hands on the code to fix the keyboard issues?

I bought this devices a while ago and it's works fine with the following exception: If I switch to another window, I have to continually reseat the USB connector for the laptop to get the keyboard and mouse to work again (currently using Windows 10 with software v119.228). Are there plans to improve the driver or is there a workaround?
