Make the most of your SATA drives. This standalone eraser dock lets you erase your 2.5” and 3.5” solid-state drives or hard drives without connecting to a host computer, making it easy to re-use or re-purpose your SATA drive. For added peace of mind, the dock offers a printed confirmation when data has been securely erased.

The eraser dock also gives you a single-bay dock for your SATA drive with fast USB 3.0 performance, also known as USB 3.1 Gen 1 (5 Gbps).

The standalone eraser dock (SDOCK1EU3P) supports nine different erase modes

Industry-recognized erase modes

Using industry-recognized erase modes, you can rest assured that the standalone eraser securely cleans, erases or sanitizes the data from your 2.5” or 3.5” SSD or HDD.

The eraser dock supports nine erase modes including Quick Erase, Single and Multi-pass Overwrites, Custom Erase, Secure Erase and Enhanced Secure Erase. The Multi-pass Overwrite (3-Pass Full Disk Overwrite) erase procedures meet the requirements of DoD (5220.22-M) standards.

Wipe sensitive data securely, confirmed with a printed receipt

The eraser dock lets you connect to an RS232 serial printer to print a record of the erase procedure and confirm that the erase has been successfully completed. This feature is ideal for IT technicians, system administrators or any departments needing confirmation when erasing sensitive or confidential information. For your reference, the printed receipt clearly shows you the time and date of erase, as well as the erase mode used. This drive eraser ensures data is purged (a secure erase) which is required by government agencies and organizations who have strict guidelines on deleting data.  Purging is a very secure method of erasing data from your storage device which complies with the NIST 800-88 Rev. 1 media sanitation standard established by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

Easy drive management and wide compatibility

For IT technicians or business professionals who need to check files or test different hard drives, the dock lets you hot-swap drives in and out as needed. The dock features a single SATA bay with a top-loading design for easy access to your drives, which makes it easy to quickly back-up or transfer data to a hard drive or solid-state drive.

With support for SATA I and II and large capacity drives (tested up to 6TB), this docking station is compatible with virtually any 2.5” and 3.5” SATA SSD or HDD drive.

The eraser dock also works with mSATA drives and M.2 drives using a compatible StarTech.com adapter:

mSATA drives: Use StarTech.com adapter SAT32MSAT257 mSATA SSD to 2.5in SATA Adapter Converter

M.2 drives: Use StarTech.com adapter SAT32M225 M.2 NGFF SSD to 2.5in SATA Adapter Converter

Hassle-free set-up and a compact design

The eraser dock is OS independent, which ensures a quick and easy setup. Its compact design and small footprint allows it to tuck easily into your workspace.

Frequently Asked Questions

Troubleshooting

  1. The drive may be damaged. Test with a known-working drive, or test the drive directly to a PC.
  2. The operating system on the computer may not support reading and writing to the file system on the docked hard drive or SSD.  Remember, Windows cannot read Mac or Linux file systems. Also, macOS can read but not write to NTFS drives.
  3. If the drives came from a RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks), they would not be accessible in our docking stations.
  4. If the drive uses 4Kn sectors, check the technical specifications of the docking station, and ensure it can read 4Kn drives.

This docking station allows the hard drive to enforce its own power state, as opposed to enforcing a power state that keeps the hard drive active at all times. Since most newer hard drives have low-power energy conservation modes, this will cause the hard drive to enter an idle state if it is not used for a certain amount of time.

The power and link LED on the hard drive eraser dock is illuminated while the drive is being erased. When the process is complete, the yellow LED is no longer illuminated.

The suggested time that the erase process will take is a conservative estimate based on the characteristics of the individual hard drive, including the maximum read and write speeds and overall health of the hard drive. The erase mode that you select can also impact the time it takes to erase the drive, as the more in-depth erase modes require more resources.

To connect your SDOCK1EU3P to your serial printer, use the same type of serial cable (straight-through or null modem) that you used to connect your serial printer to your computer. If you aren't sure which cable to use to connect your serial printer to your computer, consult the website of the serial printer manufacturer.

You should not upgrade your device's firmware if you do not have any issues with the functionality of your device. The only time you should consider an upgrade is if you are experiencing a problem with the device, and you have confirmed that the firmware addresses this problem.  You can confirm this is the case by reviewing the documentation included with the firmware or by consulting with our Technical Support team. Incorrectly upgrading firmware can result in diminished performance so it is best to contact StarTech.com if you would like to perform this operation.

Before You Buy

The suggested time that the erase process will take is a conservative estimate based on the characteristics of the individual hard drive, including the maximum read and write speeds and overall health of the hard drive. The erase mode that you select can also impact the time it takes to erase the drive, as the more in-depth erase modes require more resources.

To determine if your hard drive will work in this device, on the product page, click the Technical Specifications tab, and do the following:

  • Make sure that the device supports the storage size of your hard drive. If the storage size of your hard drive is larger than what the device was tested with, the hard drive will likely still work with the enclosure.
  • Confirm that your hard drive uses the same interface type as the device. For example, IDE, SATA, or M.2.
  • Make sure that the device supports the physical size of your hard drive, such as 2.5 inches or 3.5 inches.
  • Verify that the power consumption of your hard drive doesn’t exceed the power output of the device. If you’re using multiple hard drives, make sure that the combined power consumption of all of the hard drives doesn’t exceed the power output of the docking station.

Hard Drives

Windows 10

Before you can access a new or formatted drive in your operating system, you need to initialize it first and then create a partition on the drive. A partition defines an area of the drive to use for storing data. The partition uses a file system (for example, ex-FAT, NTFS, and so on).

Initialize a drive

Note: You typically only need to initialize a drive if the drive is new. If you cannot find an uninitialized drive in Disk Management, skip the following steps and try to partition your device.

  1. Press the Windows key + R, type compmgmt.msc, and click Run to open Computer Management.

  2. Navigate to Disk Management.

  3. When prompted to, initialize your disk(s). If you are running Windows® 7 or later and are using a drive larger than 2TB, initialize the disk(s) with GPT. If you are running an earlier version of Windows, initialize the disk(s) with MBR. For more information, visit the following FAQ: https://www.startech.com/support/faqs/technical-support?topic=hard-drives#mbr-vs-gpt.

  4. Click OK.

Create a partition in a drive

Note: The following steps create an NTFS partition that uses the entire drive space. To use a different file system, select a different option in step 6.

  1. Right-click Unallocated or RAW volume, and select New Simple Volume.

  2. In the New Partition Wizard, click Next.

  3. Select Primary partition.

  4. Leave the partition size set to default, and click Next.

  5. Assign a drive letter or leave it set to the default, and click Next.

  6. Enter the following settings to format the partition:

  • In the File System field, enter NTFS.
  • Set the Allocation unit size to Default.
  • In the Volume label field, enter <your name/reference>.
  • Select the Perform a quick format check box.
  • Clear the Enable file and folder compression check box.
  1. Click Next > Finish.

The new drive should appear in Windows Explorer.

Mac OS

Before you can access a new or formatted drive in your operating system, you need to initialize it first and then create a partition on the drive. A partition defines an area of the drive to use for storing data. The partition uses a file system (for example, HFS+, ex-FAT, NTFS, and so on).

Initialize a drive

Mac OSX detects a drive that needs to be initialized and automatically prompts you to initialize the drive. If you are prompted to initialize the drive, click Initialize. If you are not prompted to initialize the drive and you cannot find the drive in Finder, you will need to create a partition on the drive.

Create a partition on a drive

Note: The following steps create an HFS+ (Mac OS Extended (Journaled)) partition that uses the entire drive space.

To create a partition on a new drive, complete the following:

  1. Open Finder.

  2. Navigate to Applications and click Utilities.

  3. Open Disk Utility.

  4. Select the new drive and click the Partition tab.

  5. Click Options and verify that it is set to GUID Partition Table.

  6. Enter a name for the partition.

  7. Click Partition.

The drive should now be accessible in Finder.

Very Useful

By: tommm - 11/22/2016
We use this product for erasing hard drives, as you'd expect. It's great at what it does and is definitely worth the cost as it keeps your company's or your personal data safe. I have erased several hard drives since it arrived last week and I am impressed by the amount of options you are given. My only problem with the device is the fact that the completion percentage doesn't actually work and it would obviously be handy to know how long each device has left to erase. Other than that, I've had no issues and would recommend buying this :)

Does not erase known good disks

By: slash buzz - 01/28/2019
I bought this item last week, and set it up today in my office. I took a known good 6TB disk and the dock would not erase it - error was 'No Device Exist!'. So I formatted the drive and copied files to it. When I mounted the HDD via the dock, I could see these files on my PC, so the dock is able to read the disk. But, when I went to erase the disk, I got the same error. Unless Startech can provide extra instructions that I somehow missed in the box and online, I have to call this an expensive mistake.
