Installation

Note: Do not physically connect the USB video adapter to your computer until you are instructed to (Step 5).

Prior to installing this device, make sure that your operating system is up to date (for example, you have installed the most recent service pack).

To install the driver:

  1. Download the latest drivers from the StarTech.com website (http://www.startech.com/Support). You can find the part number and product ID on the product’s packaging.

Note: Windows will typically save the files to the Downloads folder that is associated with your user account (for example, C:\Users\your_name\Downloads).

  1. Once the download is complete, right-click the zip folder that you downloaded, select Extract All, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  2. Select the appropriate folder for your operating system.
  3. Right-click Setup.exe.
  4. Click Run as Administrator.

Note: If the Run as Administrator option is not available, you might be attempting to run the installer from within the zipped file. Please extract the files using the instructions in Step 2.

  1. Follow the on-screen prompts to install the device drivers and restart the computer when prompted.
  2. Once Windows has restarted, connect the USB video adapter to your computer.
  3. Your computer will automatically complete the driver installation and your device should be ready to use.

Note: Installation may take several seconds to complete. During the installation your display might flicker; this is normal. Once the installation has completed you will see your Windows desktop extended to the additional monitor.

Note: Do not physically connect the USB video adapter to your computer until instructed to (Step 7).

  1. Download the latest drivers from the StarTech.com website (http://www.startech.com/Support). You can find the part number and product ID on the product’s packaging.

Note: Mac OS X will typically save the files to the Downloads folder that is associated with your user account (for example, hard_drive_name\Users\your_name\Downloads).

  1. Double-click the DisplayLink.zip file.
  2. Double-click the MAC OS folder.
  3. Double-click the appropriate folder for your operating system.
  4. Double-click the DisplayLink Installer 75598.dmg file.
  5. Follow the prompts to install the new drivers. Restart the computer when prompted.
  6. Once Mac OS X has restarted, connect the USB video adapter to your computer.

Note: Installation might take several seconds to complete. During the installation your display might flicker; this is normal. Once the installation has completed you will see your Macintosh desktop extended to the additional monitor.

To install your USB video adapter in Ubuntu 15.0 (kernel 3.16), you need to download the Dynamic Kernel Module Support (DKMS) package and the adapter driver. 

To install the DKMS package, complete the following:

  1. On your desktop, click the Ubuntu icon, type terminal, and then press Enter.
  2. Type sudo apt-get install dkms, and then press Enter.

When the DKMS package is installed, complete the following:

  1. Download the latest drivers from the StarTech.com website (www.startech.com/Support). You can find the part number and product ID on the product packaging.

Note: Ubuntu typically saves files to the Downloads folder that is associated with your user account (for example, ~/Downloads).

  1. When the download is complete, open the zip folder that you downloaded and click and drag the Ubuntu folder to your desktop.
  2. Click the Ubuntu icon, type terminal, and then press Enter.
  3. Type cd ~/Desktop/Ubuntu, and then press Enter.
  4. Type chmod 755 displaylink-driver.run, and then press Enter.
  5. Type sudo ./displaylink-driver.run, and then press Enter.
  6. When the driver package finishes installing, restart your computer. To restart your computer from the terminal window, type sudo reboot, and then press Enter.
  7. When Ubuntu finishes restarting, connect the USB video adapter to your computer.

Note: It can take several minutes to complete the installation. During this time, your display might flicker, but this is normal behavior. When the installation is complete, your Ubuntu desktop is extended to the additional monitor.

  1. Unplug the USB video adapter from the computer.
  2. Click Start > Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a program.

Note: In Windows 8 and 8.1, press the Windows key + X instead of clicking Start.

  1. Right-click DisplayLink Core Software and choose Uninstall.
  2. Restart the computer when prompted.

Note: There are two DisplayLink entries in the list of programs. When you uninstall DisplayLink Core Software, all DisplayLink entries are uninstalled.

Starting in High Sierra 10.13, macOS enforces stricter security policies than previous revisions. As a result of these changes, software packages, like those used in this installation, will need to be allowed within the macOS Security and Privacy settings, immediately after the software has been installed, in order for the device to operate.

To allow the software, follow these steps after you've completed installation on your Mac:

  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Open Security & Privacy.
  3. Click the Allow button near the bottom of the General tab.

Note: The option to allow the software will be available within the Security & Privacy settings for 30 minutes. If the software is not allowed within that time frame, the software must be reinstalled in order for macOS to grant the opportunity to allow it again.

To install the DisplayLink Manager app, please follow these steps:

  1. Download the latest driver: [displaylink] mac usb display adapter.zip
  2. Connect the StarTech.com product to both your Mac and the external display
  3. Follow Steps 4 to 4.10 here: DisplayLink Manager App for macOS [external link to DisplayLink.com]

If the displays still do not work, please review these points:

  • After installing, ensure you have completed Steps 4.4 to 4.9 in the linked article, which includes running the application after installation and selecting “Launch automatically after logging-in”.  This will ensure it starts automatically every time you log-in.
  • On Apple M1-based Macs, you may be prompted to install Rosetta during the DisplayLink install process. This is currently required to allow DisplayLink to work on Apple Silicon Macs.
  • Clamshell and rotation support on macOS Big Sur 11.x with DisplayLink Manager [external link to DisplayLink.com]

Troubleshooting

DisplayLink powered USB video adapters and docking stations are not compatible with any MacBook running macOS 10.13.4 - 10.13.6. If a system has updated to macOS 10.13.4, 10.13.5, or 10.13.6, upgrading to macOS 10.14 (Mojave) is an option for users to restore DisplayLink functionality.

At this time, the DisplayLink compatibility issue also affects any 2018 MacBook Pro laptops with an Intel Coffee Lake CPU running macOS 10.14. Please see the DisplayLink site for a driver download workaround. This workaround will force AirPlay to extend or mirror one USB display.

Computers running macOS Catalina (10.15) may experience compatibility issues with products that use DisplayLink technology, such as USB Docking Stations and Video Adapters. Connecting to a DisplayLink-powered Product may cause the Display(s) to output a blank screen. If you experience this problem, follow these steps:

  1. Update computer to the latest version of macOS 10.15
  2. Permit Screen Recording by following these steps: macOS Catalina 10.15: Screen Recording permission (external link)
  3. Enable the DisplayLink Kernel Extension by following these steps: macOS 10.13, 10.14 and 10.15: Video functionality not enabled (external link)
  4. If the problem persists, try installing the DisplayLink Manager Application (external link). Be sure to run the application after installation and select “Launch automatically after logging-in” for it to start automatically every time you log-in.
  1. Our driver may not be installed or is out of date.  Install the latest driver from StarTech.com’s website.
  2. The primary display adapter for the computer has an outdated or basic driver installed. Update the video driver using the manufacturer’s support site.
  3. The product requires an existing video controller (onboard or discrete) from Intel, AMD, or NVIDIA.  The video controller must have a WDDM (Windows Display Driver Model), compatible driver. Most video controllers from 2008 or newer will meet this requirement.
  4. An incompatible operating system is being used (i.e., MCT based adapter and macOS).  If using a Mac, we recommend exchanging the product for a DisplayLink based version.
  5. The display connected to the StarTech.com adapter is set to the wrong video input. Use the display’s on-screen display menu to select the correct input.

Your user account may require administrator privileges to install the driver.  If the computer is managed by the IT department or service provider, they may need to be contacted to help with this step.

Disable hardware acceleration in each browser and Office application, then close and re-open each application.

Ensure the Sound Playback device in Windows (or Output device in macOS) has been set to be our USB audio device.

When you troubleshoot issues with a USB video adapter, there are some quick tests that you can complete to rule out potential problems. You can test to make sure that the following components are working correctly and are not the source of the issue:

  • Video cables

  • Video source

  • Video destination

  • USB video adapter

To test your setup components, try the following:

  • Use the video cables, video source, video destination, and USB video adapter in another setup to see if the problem is with the components or the setup.

  • Use a different video cable, video source, video destination, and USB video adapter in your setup to see if the problem persists. Ideally, you should test a component that you know works in another setup.

When you test your cables, it is recommended that you do the following:

  • Test each cable individually.

  • Use short cables when you are testing.

When you test the video cables, video source, video destination, and USB video adapter, it is recommended that you do the following:

  • Check Device Manager under Display adapters, Universal Serial Bus controllers, or USB Display adapters. To do this, press the Windows key + R, type devmgmt.msc, and press Enter to open Device Manager.

  • If you do not see the USB video adapter in Device Manager, refer to the following FAQ: https://www.startech.com/support/faqs/technical-support?topic=expansion-cards#usb-cannot-detect-windows.

  • If the device is listed with an error, reinstall the drivers following the instructions on the website.

  • Check to see if your video card drivers are current. You can check what video card you have in Device Manager under Display adapters. It is recommended that you go directly to the video card manufacturer's website to check for the latest drivers.

  • Check to see if the monitor is being detected by Windows.

To check to see if Windows is detecting the monitor using a computer that is running a version of Windows XP, do the following:

  • Right-click on the desktop and click Properties.
  • Click the Settings tab.
  • If you see Drag the monitor icons to match the physical arrangement of your monitors, it means that Windows is detecting more than a single monitor. You can click the drop-down menu under Display to see which monitors are detected. This option is not available if Windows only detects a single monitor.

To check to see if Windows is detecting the monitor using a computer that is running a version of Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8, do the following:

  • Right-click on the desktop and click Screen Resolution.
  • You can click the drop-down menu under Display to see which monitors are detected.

If hardware acceleration is enabled on any of your software applications, it can result in poor resource management and limit the performance of your video device. If you experience this problem, you should disable hardware acceleration in the program(s) that were impacted. 

To disable hardware acceleration in common applications and operating systems, complete one of the following series of steps, depending on what software application(s) or operating system that you are running.

Chromium-Based Microsoft Edge:

 

  1. Click the Options icon (it has three dots on it).
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Click System.
  4. Uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available.

Internet Explorer 9 and later

Note: Earlier versions of Internet Explorer do not use hardware acceleration.

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Open Control Panel.
  3. Click Network and Internet.
  4. Click Internet Options.
  5. Click the Advanced tab.
  6. Browse to the Accelerated graphics screen.
  7. Select the Use software rendering instead of GPU rendering check box.
  8. Click Apply.
  9. Restart your computer.

Mozilla Firefox

  1. Open Firefox.
  2. Press the Alt key.
  3. Click Tools and Options.
  4. Click the Advanced icon.
  5. Click the General tab.
  6. Under Browsing, clear the Use hardware acceleration when available check box.
  7. Click the OK button.
  8. Restart your web browser.

Google Chrome

  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. Click the Options icon (it has three horizontal lines on it).
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Click Show advanced settings.
  5. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and clear the Use hardware acceleration when available check box.
  6. Restart your web browser.

Microsoft Office 2013 / 2010

  1. Open any program in Microsoft Office (for example, Microsoft Word).
  2. Click the File tab.
  3. In the menu on the left side of the screen, click Options.
  4. Click Advanced.
  5. Under Display, select the Disable hardware graphics acceleration check box.
  6. Close and restart all of the Microsoft Office programs that you had open.

Windows 10 / 8

  1. Press the Windows key +X.
  2. Click Control Panel.
  3. Click Personalization.
  4. Select a high-contrast theme.

Windows 7 / Vista

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Click Control Panel.
  3. Click Personalization.
  4. Select a non-Aero theme. Ideally, you should select a basic and high-contrast theme.

Windows XP

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Open the Control Panel.
  3. Select Display.
  4. Click the Settings tab.
  5. Click Advanced.
  6. Click the Troubleshooting tab.
  7. Move the Hardware Acceleration slider to None.
  8. Restart your computer.

If the display connected through your USB display adapter does not wake up after your computer has been in extended hibernation, it is likely that Windows has automatically turned off the USB Root hub to save power. 

The steps below outline how to configure the USB root hub to stay on during hibernation, to prevent this from happening.

Windows 8 / 10

  1. On your keyboard, press the Windows key + X and select Control Panel.
  2. Click Hardware and Sound, then click Power Options.
  3. Click Change plan settings for the plan you want to change.
  4. Click Change advanced power settings.
  5. Click the plus sign (+) next to “USB settings” and “USB selective suspend setting” to expand the options and change the setting to Disabled.
  6. Click OK to apply the setting.

Note: You may need to disconnect and re-connect your USB display adapter after applying these settings to re-establish the connection.

Windows 7 / Vista

  1. Click the Start button and select Control Panel.
  2. Click Hardware and Sound, then click Power Options.
  3. Click Change plan settings for the plan you want to change.
  4. Click Change advanced power settings.
  5. Click the plus sign (+) next to “USB settings” and “USB selective suspend setting” to expand the options and change the setting to Disabled.
  6. Click OK to apply the setting.

Note: You may need to disconnect and re-connect your USB display adapter after applying these settings to re-establish the connection.

Windows XP

  1. On your desktop, right-click the My Computer icon and select Properties.
  2. Click the Device Manager tab.
  3. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers by clicking the arrow to the left of it.
  4. Right-click the first USB Root Hub device and select Properties.
  5. Click the Power Management tab.
  6. Clear the box next to Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
  7. Click OK to apply the setting.
  8. Repeat steps 4-7 for any remaining devices in the Universal Serial Bus Controllers section with “Root Hub” in the name.

Note: You may need to disconnect and re-connect your USB display adapter after applying these settings to re-establish the connection.

While the purpose of our USB Video Adapters are to add an additional video output to your laptop or desktop computer, these adapters still require some resources from your internal video card. On a small number of video cards, adding a USB Video Adapter can exceed the limit of available resources, causing one of the connected displays to turn off.

As a possible workaround for this issue, we recommend using a more powerful USB Video Adapter that has a higher amount of integrated RAM, such as our USB32VGAPRO (512MB), USB32DVIPRO (512MB), or USB32HDDVII (1GB).

Touchscreen Monitors

A mixture of touchscreen and non-touchscreen displays can cause a conflict with your internal video card. Because of this limitation, touchscreen functions may be disabled when the USB Video Adapter is connected, or the USB Video Adapter may not work at all. Contact the manufacturer of your system to confirm whether your specific model can support a secondary display or not.

All-in-One Computers

Many all-in-one computer systems limit the number of possible monitors to one. This is a limitation in how all-in-one computers are typically manufactured, so adding an external display may not be possible regardless of which USB video adapter is used. Contact the manufacturer of your system to confirm whether your specific model can support a secondary display or not.

When you use remote desktop software to access a computer with a USB video adapter, keep the following things in mind:

  • Not all remote desktop software supports multiple monitors.
  • Not all remote desktop software supports monitors that use USB video adapters.
  • If the primary monitor is a monitor that uses a USB video adapter, you might run into problems.  If you do, try to continue to log in as the display might come back once you log in.

In order for your mouse to move properly between your monitors you must rearrange your monitors in Windows to match the physical location of your monitors on your desk. To do so, complete the following based on your operating system:

Windows 10 and Windows  8

  1. On your keyboard, press the Windows key + X and select Control Panel.
  2. Click Appearance and Personalization, then click Display.
  3. Click the Resolution or Adjust Resolution option from the left column, which will display your monitors as numbered icons.
  4. Click Identify to display the numbers on each connected monitor, showing how the operating system has assigned their positions.
  5. Click and drag the monitor icons to best match your physical setup.
  6. Click OK to apply the changes and close the window.

Windows 7 and Windows Vista

  1. Click the Start button and select Control Panel.
  2. Click Appearance and Personalization, then click Display.
  3. Click the Resolution or Adjust Resolution option from the left column, which will display your monitors as numbered icons.

If Display pointer trails or Enhance pointer precision is enabled in your mouse settings, it can cause visibility issues with your mouse pointer on the display attached to the USB video adapter.

To resolve the issue, you can disable Display pointer trails and Enhance pointer precision, by following the steps below:

Windows 10 / 8

  1. On your keyboard, hold down the Windows Key and press X.
  2. Click Control Panel.
  3. Click Hardware and Sound.
  4. Click Mouse located under Devices and Printers.
  5. Click the Pointer Options tab.
  6. Remove the check box from the Display pointer trails box.
  7. Remove the check from the Enhance pointer precision box.
  8. Click the Apply button.


Windows 7 / Vista

  1. Click Start.
  2. Click Control Panel.
  3. Click Hardware and Sound.
  4. Click Mouse located under Devices and Printers.
  5. Click the Pointer Options tab.
  6. Remove the check from the Display pointer trails box.
  7. Remove the check from the Enhance pointer precision box.
  8. Click the Apply button.


Windows XP

  1. Click Start.
  2. Click Control Panel

Note: If your control panel is set to category view select Switch to Classic View

  1. Click Mouse.
  2. Click the Pointer Options tab.
  3. Under visibility, remove the check box from Display pointer trails.

To output 4K to a DisplayPort display at 30Hz, your monitor must support the resolution and refresh rate. If your monitor also supports 4K at 60Hz (DP 1.2 or higher), you may also need to set the monitor to work at 30Hz. 

To resolve this issue, use the buttons on your monitor to change the DisplayPort settings to DP1.1. For more information about how to change your monitor settings, refer to the website of the manufacturer of your monitor.

How To

To arrange extended displays on Windows 10, complete the following. 

  1. Press the Windows key+R, type desk.cpl, and press Enter. 
  2. Under the ‘Multiple Displays’ selection, select ‘Extend Desktop To This Display.’  
  3. Press ‘Identify’ to determine what number each display is assigned to. 
  4. Drag and drop each display accordingly to the physical layout on your desk.  
  5. Click the Apply button. 

To arrange extended displays on macOS, complete the following. 

  1. Navigate to the Apple Menu > System Preferences, click Displays, then click Arrangement
  2. Make sure that the ‘Mirror Displays’ checkbox is not selected. 
  3. Click on each display to determine what number each display is assigned to. 
  4. Drag and drop each display accordingly to the physical layout on your desk.  

To confirm that Windows detects your USB device, complete the following:

  1. Press the Windows key+R, type devmgmt.msc, and press Enter.
  2. In Device Manager, under the appropriate heading, confirm that your expansion card is listed and that there isn't an exclamation mark next to it.  For example, a USB controller card would be under Universal Serial Bus controllers.

Your USB device is listed according to the name of the chipset. To determine the name of the chipset of your USB device, navigate to www.StarTech.com and look on the Technical Specifications tab for your product.

Windows 10 / 8

  1. On your keyboard, press the Windows Key + X and select Control Panel.
  2. Click Appearance and Personalization, then click Display.
  3. Click the Resolution or Adjust Resolution option from the left column.
  4. Expand the drop-down menu next to “Multiple displays” and select Duplicate these Displays.
  5. Click OK to apply the changes and close the window.

Windows 7 / Vista

  1. Click the Start button and select Control Panel.
  2. Click Appearance and Personalization, then click Display.
  3. Click the Resolution or Adjust Resolution option from the left column.
  4. Expand the drop-down menu next to “Multiple displays” and select Duplicate these Displays.
  5. Click OK to apply the changes and close the window.

Windows XP

  1. Click the Start button and select Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Display.
  3. Click the Settings tab.
  4. Un-check the box beside Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor.
  5. Click OK to apply the changes and close the window.

Existing DisplayLink® enabled USB 3.0 products natively support Chrome OS build version R55 and later, but not all Chromebook notebook computers running build version R55 and later natively support DisplayLink. Support for DisplayLink is being rolled out to Chromebook notebook computers in a series of releases. In Windows, the maximum number of displays that can be used using DisplayLink technology is 6. In macOS, the maximum is 4 displays. Some computers may have limitations that will reduce this number. These limitations are usually the result of the GPU, or USB controller resources.
