Special Notes / Requirements System and Cable Requirements A host laptop with an available USB-C port (to ensure full adapter functionality, the host USB-C port must support USB Power Delivery 2.0 and DP alt mode)
Note Not all USB-C ports support the full functionality of the USB Type-C standard. Ensure that your host USB-C port supports USB Power Delivery 2.0 and DP alt mode.
System and Cable Requirements Optional: USB-C power adapter (for example, your laptop’s USB-C based power adapter)
Note The adapter can connect to a host laptop’s USB-C port that doesn’t support USB Power Delivery 2.0. However, in this configuration if a power adapter is connected to the multifunction adapter, it will not pass power through to your host laptop.
A 4K-capable display is required to achieve 3840 x 2160p resolution (4K is also known as 4K x 2K)
USB 3.0 is also known as USB 3.1 Gen 1; this connectivity standard offers speeds up to 5Gbps.
Your laptop might have specific charging requirements. For example, if your laptop requires exactly 60W of power and an adapter consumes some of the 60W, your laptop might not recognize that it is getting enough power. For more information about Power Delivery, refer to the manufacturer of your hardware.

Starting in High Sierra 10.13, macOS enforces stricter security policies than previous revisions. As a result of these changes, software packages, like those used in this installation, will need to be allowed within the macOS Security and Privacy settings, immediately after the software has been installed, in order for the device to operate.

To allow the software, follow these steps after you've completed installation on your Mac:

  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Open Security & Privacy.
  3. Click the Allow button near the bottom of the General tab.

Note: The option to allow the software will be available within the Security & Privacy settings for 30 minutes. If the software is not allowed within that time frame, the software must be reinstalled in order for macOS to grant the opportunity to allow it again.

Troubleshooting

When you troubleshoot issues with a laptop docking station, there are some quick tests that you can complete to rule out potential problems. You can test to make sure that the following components are working correctly and are not the source of the issue:

  • Video cables

  • Video source

  • Video destination

  • Laptop docking station

  • USB peripherals

  • Ethernet connection

To test your setup components, try the following:

  • Use the video cables, video source, video destination, laptop docking station, USB peripherals, and Ethernet connection in another setup to see if the problem is with the components or the setup.

  • Use a different video cable, video source, video destination, laptop docking station, USB peripherals, and Ethernet connection setup to see if the problem persists. Ideally, you should test a component that you know works in another setup.

When you test your cables, it is recommended that you do the following:

  • Test each cable individually.

  • Use short cables when you are testing.

When you test the video cables, video source, video destination, and laptop docking station it is recommended that you do the following:

  1. Press the Windows key + R, type devmgmt.msc, and press Enter to open Device Manager.

  2. If you do not see the USB video adapter in Device Manager, refer to the following FAQ: https://www.startech.com/support/faqs/technical-support?topic=expansion-cards#usb-cannot-detect-windows.

  3. If the device is listed with an error, reinstall the drivers following the instructions on the website.

  4. Check to see if your video card drivers are current. You can check what video card you have in Device Manager under Display adapters. It is recommended that you go directly to the video card manufacturer's website to check for the latest drivers.

  5. Check to see if the monitor is being detected by Windows.

For more information about testing the USB peripherals and the laptop docking station, visit www.startech.com/faq/usb_hubs_general_troubleshooting.

Before You Buy

USB-C is a type of USB connector that is capable of supporting the following:

  • Data transfer speeds up to 10Gbps, if you use USB 3.1.
  • Bi-directional power delivery up to 100W, if both the USB host connection and the device support it.
  • Alternate modes, which deliver different types of data at different speeds. For example, DisplayPort Alternate Mode (DP Alt Mode).

If using Thunderbolt 3 over USB-C, the connection is capable of additional features. For example, Thunderbolt 3 is capable of 40Gbps of total bandwidth. For more information, refer to the following FAQ: https://www.startech.com/faq/thunderbolt-3-port-capabilities.

Not all USB-C ports or devices are capable of supporting all of the features listed above, or all of the features at the maximum capabilities. If you require a specific USB-C feature, your USB host connection, cables, and device must all support the feature that you require. For more information about whether your components support specific USB-C features, refer to the information provided by the manufacturers.

This USB-C device requires that all of the following components support alternate modes:

  • The USB-C host connection (for example, a computer and its port)
  • The USB-C cable
  • The USB-C device (for example, a hard drive docking station)

If your host device includes a Thunderbolt™ 3 connection, this USB-C device will work with your host device.

For more information about the modes that your setup components support, refer to the information provided by the manufacturers.

To use all of the features of this USB-C device, it is required that all of the following components support USB Power Delivery 2.0 and DisplayPort Alternate Mode:

  • The USB-C host connection.
  • The USB-C cable.
  • The USB-C device (for example, a hard drive docking station).

To check how much power this device requires, visit the product page, and look on the Technical Specifications tab.

For more information about the power delivery capabilities of your other components, refer to the information provided by the manufacturers.

Great all-in-one adapter

By: Andrew11 - 02/03/2017
This adapter is small enough to travel with, but has all the features I need in the office. My Dell Ultrabook has its own power adapter, but I was happy to see that this adapter could charge it through the USB-C port as well, saving me from having to look at a second adapter. The Gigabit Ethernet port, HDMI and 2x USB3 are all I need, and I can’t get over how small it is for all the features. I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review

Like a mini docking station!

By: scottgosse416 - 02/12/2017
With two USB 3.0 ports, gigabit ethernet and HDMI, the USB-C multifunction adapter for laptops is like a mini docking station for users on the move! Whether you are travelling, visiting customer / client sites or just going to different work facilities the multifunction adapter has it all in a small for factor (fits in my hand). It does need a usb c power source which is not included but laptop or cell phone chargers will work just fine. I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.

Works great on the new Macbook

By: NA42 - 02/21/2017
Simple little device that provides HDMI, ethernet and a couple USB3.0 ports. Download the drivers from StarTech's website (it's a little file), unzip, run the Mac installer pkg, restart, and it just works. On one of my Macs, after installing the drivers, the OS froze on bootup. But a quick "turn it off and on again" made that go away, and the device works flawlessly. On a Dell laptop, that same downloaded zip file had the Linux and Windows drivers, both of which worked without issue. The adapter can be used with or without the laptop's power passing through. With power connected, everything works, AND the laptop charges. Just be sure to disconnect the StarTech device, then either connect/disconnect power, and then reconnect to the laptop. If you remove power from the StarTech device while it's driving HDMI, the laptop will think external video is connected still, but nothing will show on the external monitor. So resetting the device, as noted, brings everything back. A removable or longer USB-C cord would be really great here, as having to run the network and HDMI cables right up to the laptop due to the short USB-C cable is a little ugly, but.... Let's face it, the device does what it is supposed to do. I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.

When it works, it's fine.

By: JonM - 02/23/2017
I have an issue where the monitor connected to the HDMI port won't display after waking from sleep. I have a 2016 MacBook Pro and it shows the monitor is connected, but the screen stays black. The only way to get it to come back on is to reboot the machine. I've tested different cables and ports on the MBP, but nothing works.

Works well except for annoying Macbook reboot bug

By: StevenG - 02/24/2017
Just like the other reviewer said, it works great except that with a 2016 Macbook Pro 15" you need to reboot in order for the HDMI monitor connection to work. Otherwise it shows as connected on the Macbook but the external monitor screen is black. After a reboot it works fine. Charging works fine. And yes the USB-C cable from the dock could be another 2-4 feet longer as you need to keep the dock fairly close to the Macbook. StarTech - is this a driver issue? Have you looked into it?

Full compatible with Dell XPS

By: LuisC - 07/19/2017
I did a test with this product for 3 months and it works very well on my Dell XPS 13. The Lan and HDMI does its job perfectly and I had no issues. Its a nice way to get a dock station for a small space. I like it. “I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.”
