This USB 3.1 PCIe card lets you add four USB Type-A ports to your computer, through a PCI Express slot. With two independent 10Gbps channels, the card makes it easy to upgrade your PC to the faster speed of USB 3.1 Gen 2 so that you can access newer peripherals at twice the speed of traditional USB 3.0 (USB 3.1 Gen 1) cards.

Faster USB performance

When multiple devices are connected, traditional single-bus USB cards share your maximum bandwidth between all ports. By employing two host controller chipsets, shared across two ports rather than four, this 4-port USB 3.1 card dedicates up to 10Gbps for each set of two USB ports. It reduces performance bottlenecks and doubles your total available bandwidth to 20Gbps.

By adding 10Gbps USB ports to your computer, you can harness the speed of USB 3.1 Gen 2 and rest assured you’re ready for both current and future high-bandwidth USB-A devices.

With higher data throughput support, this PCI Express USB 3.1 card is a necessity for external hard drives, hard drive enclosures, and many other USB 3.1 peripherals. Plus, the USB card includes an optional SATA or LP4 power connector to connect to your system power supply and deliver up to 900mA of power per port to USB 3.1 bus-powered devices (500mA for USB 2.0). The card is ideal for use with large external storage solutions.

Shared bandwidth

The 4-port USB 3.1 card features dual independent channels to your computer and shares 10Gbps of bandwidth between two USB ports.

Each set of two ports shares a combined bandwidth of 10Gbps. If a single device is accessing the channel, the card will provide data transfer rates of up to 10Gbps to the device. If two devices are accessing the channel simultaneously, the 10Gbps of bandwidth will be shared between both devices.

Room for four additional devices

With four external USB-A ports you can connect more devices to your computer. The card provides easy access to commonly-used peripherals such as your flash drive and external hard drive and allows you to connect to both current and future high-bandwidth USB-A devices.

For more flexibility, you can couple the card with a USB-C to USB-A Cable (USB31AC1M) and connect your USB Type-C™ devices.

Compatible with older USB devices

Connecting older peripherals isn’t a problem. This versatile USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gbps) card is backward compatible with legacy USB 3.0/2.0 devices that use the common USB Type-A port, so you can eliminate the added expense and aggravation of purchasing new devices.

The PEXUSB314A2V is backed by a StarTech.com 2-year warranty and free lifetime technical support.

Applications

  • Upgrade an older PCIe equipped desktop from USB 3.0/2.0 to USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gbps)
  • Expand the USB capabilities of your system with four additional USB ports, or install the card as a vital hardware component when building a new PC
  • Ideal for file backups, video editing, and data recovery, using high-bandwidth USB 3.1 Gen 2 external storage solutions

  1. Complete the instructions to install the device drivers, and restart your computer when prompted to.

Your device should be ready to use.

Troubleshooting

If your setup components support USB 3.1 but you are experiencing slower transfer speeds than you expected, consider the following:

  • A USB host connection with multiple USB 3.1 ports might not be able to support 10Gbps on each port simultaneously.
  • The type of port on a device does not determine whether the device is capable of USB 3.1 speeds. A USB-C port might not support USB 3.1 speeds, while USB-A and USB-B ports might support USB 3.1 speeds.
  • Any other devices that you include in your setup, such as an older hard drive in a USB 3.1 enclosure, might create a point of congestion and slow down transfer speeds.

To confirm the functionality of your USB host connection, its ports, and any other devices in your setup, refer to the information provided by the manufacturer.

Note: USB 3.1 is also known as USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gbps). Devices that support USB 3.1 should have the USB 3.1 symbol on them. If the USB 3.1 symbol does not appear on your USB source or device, refer to the information provided by the manufacturer to confirm whether the USB source or device support USB 3.1.

When you troubleshoot issues with a USB controller card, there are some quick tests that you can complete to rule out potential problems. You can test to make sure that the following components are working correctly and are not the source of the issue:

  • USB cables

  • USB devices

  • USB controller card

To test your setup components, try the following:

  • Use the USB cable, device, and controller card in another setup to see if the problem is with the components or the setup.

  • Use a different USB cable, device, and controller card in your setup to see if the problem persists. Ideally, you should test a component that you know works in another setup.

When you test your cables, it is recommended that you do the following:

  • Test each cable individually.

  • Use short cables when you are testing.

When you test the USB device and controller card, it is recommended that you do the following:

If the USB device does not work after your computer has been in extended hibernation, it is likely that Windows has automatically turned off the USB Root hub to save power.

The steps below outline how to configure the USB root hub to stay on during hibernation, to prevent this from happening.

  2. Click the Device Manager tab.
  3. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers by clicking the arrow to the left of it.
  4. Right-click the first USB Root Hub device and select Properties.
  5. Click the Power Management tab.
  6. Clear the box next to Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
  7. Click OK to apply the setting.
  8. Repeat steps 4-7 for any remaining devices in the Universal Serial Bus Controllers section with “Root Hub” in the name.

Note: You may need to disconnect and re-connect your USB device after applying these settings to re-establish the connection.

How To

To confirm that the Mac OS detects your expansion card, complete the following:

  1. Click the Apple icon.
  2. Click About This Mac.
  3. Click More Info or System Report.
  4. Under the appropriate heading, confirm that your expansion card is listed and that there isn't an error. For example, a network card would be under Ethernet Cards.

Your expansion card is listed according to the name of the chipset. To determine the name of the chipset of your expansion card, navigate to www.StarTech.com and look on the Technical Specifications tab for your product.

To confirm that Windows detects your expansion card, complete the following:

  1. Press the Windows key+R, type devmgmt.msc, and press Enter.
  2. In Device Manager, under the appropriate heading, confirm that your expansion card is listed and that there isn't an exclamation mark next to it.  For example, a USB controller card would be under Universal Serial Bus controllers.

Your expansion card is listed according to the name of the chipset. To determine the name of the chipset of your expansion card, navigate to www.StarTech.com and look on the Technical Specifications tab for your product.

Before You Buy

To transfer data at speeds of 10Gbps, you need to confirm that the following components in your setup support USB 3.1:

  • The USB host connection
  • The USB cable
  • The USB device and any subcomponents (for example, a hard drive docking station and the hard drives in the docking station)

The USB expansion cards derive power from the PCI or PCI Express slot on the motherboard. When high-powered USB devices are connected to the USB expansion card, the power provided by the slot may not be enough to power all of the devices and you should connect additional sources of power. When you troubleshoot issues, you should connect an additional source of power.

Symptoms that you are experiencing power-related issues include certain devices not working correctly, not all of the devices working at the same time, and certain devices not working at all.

Examples of low-powered USB devices include USB mice, keyboards, and flash drives. An example of a high-powered USB device is an external hard drive that does not have an external source of power.

USB 3.1 is the most recent version of the USB (Universal Serial Bus) standard for connecting computers and electronic devices. It is capable of data transfer speeds up to 10Gbps, and while it can use the USB-C connector type, it can also use a variety of other connector types. To achieve USB 3.1 transfer speeds, your USB host connection, cables, and device must all support USB 3.1. USB 3.1 is also known as USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gbps).

USB 3.0 is capable of data transfer speeds up to 5Gbps. USB 3.0 is also known as USB 3.1 Gen 1 (5Gbps).

USB 3.1 is backwards compatible with USB 3.0 and USB 2.0, except in the following scenarios:

  • USB-B 3.1 cables are not compatible with USB-B 2.0 ports.
  • Unless you use an adapter, USB-C ports or cables will not work with USB-A or USB-B ports or cables.
  • Devices that require USB 3.1 transfer speeds of 10Gbps might not work with USB 3.0 or USB 2.0, or you might experience lower transfer speeds and impacted performance.
  • Bus-powered USB devices that requires more power than what USB 2.0 can provide are not compatible with USB 2.0.

Works great!

By: Morty - 08/03/2017
There isn't much to say other than this product works exactly as you'd expect and no less. It's an excellent purchase to get an additional USB 3.1 ports on a desktop PC. I'm using all four ports with four USB hard drives with no issues and transfers are pretty fast on the USB 3 capable hard drives. I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.

Excellent speed easy Windows setup

By: macphoto_1970 - 08/13/2017
This is a nice little USB 3.1 card for anyone needing to add a high speed card to a tower. I tried this card in 2 different machines under 2 different OS's and had some different results. For Starters I decided to try this in my older Mac Pro and hoped that it would work. I did not .. I should have paid more attention to the requirements as the newer OS's are not supported. which is a shame because this would be a great card in an old mac. However after some experimentation I decided to put this card into a PC and see what it was meant to do. I put this into my custom PC working off on older Z87 chipset and it worked beautifully with very fast speed and great performance. Installation is simple and easy and the driver had no issues. I tested the card with multiple hard drives and dedicated USB 3. drives had a really good performance. Older devices worked as expected. So in conclusion. The card works great in a PC. Not in a mac unless running older outdated software ( new drivers would be awesome for mac!!) but the card itself is good, simple and fast I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.

Probably faster than your internal drives anyway!

By: Nick66 - 08/25/2017
Theoretically, this card can pump through the full USB 3.1 speed to your USB3.1 external. If course, you have to have internal storage that can hit 10gbps or 1.25GBps to do that... My USB 3.1 dual MSATA RAID0 device comes close, but still doesn't max this card's ability. My internal storage didn't come close (and I don't have an 8 drive SSD RAID0 to test with (Startech, wanna help a tester out?!?!?) . The drivers worked fine in Windows. Didn't have to do anything in Ubuntu or CentOS, it just worked. No Mac tower to test with. Definitely add the external power to the card if you are using all 4 ports with devices drawing power. Inter-port transfers are faster than any device I had. So essentially, this device removed the USB interface as the bottleneck with storage. :) I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review

Easy to install and does the job

By: Djluis13 - 01/20/2018
Running out of USB? Well, this product is for you then. This card is an easy product to install just like other Startech installs and great speed. I'm really enjoying to have it instead of the USB 2 and I can do data transfers with a full USB 3.1 speed and boot from one of my external drives as well. I tested with Windows 7, 10 and 2012 and I had no problems. Great work Startech! "I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review"

Does not work on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS

By: Andrew R - 10/18/2019
This card has problems on the 4.14 Debian kernel. The usb devices do not enumerate. Works on asus boards x299 boards only

By: Lingaraju - 03/20/2020
Worked out of the box easy on asus x299 board in any pcie slot but i changed to evga x299 dark board recently and i mainly use this card to connect 3 oculus sensor and headset usb with molex power connect and none of the connected devices are detected and if i connect more than 1 sensor at once i immediately get bsod and with windows default drivers or the drivers provided on this site dont work, for some reason evga board detects this x4 gen 2 when it is gen 3, i am not sure why and even evga tech had no idea and said its just incompatible, idk what else to do, but works great on asus x299 board though perfectly.
