Frequently Asked Questions

Troubleshooting

When you troubleshoot issues with a hard drive rack, there are some quick tests that you can complete to rule out potential problems. You can test to make sure that the following components are working correctly and are not the source of the issue:

  • SATA and SAS cables
  • Hard drives
  • Hard drive rack

To test your setup components, try the following:

  • Use the cables, hard drives, and hard drive rack in another setup to see if the problem is with the components or the setup.
  • Use a different cable, hard drive, and hard drive rack in your setup to see if the problem persists. Ideally, you should test a component that you know works in another setup.

When you test the hard drive and hard drive rack, it is recommended that you do the following:

  • To check Disk Management, press the Windows key + R, type diskmgmt.msc, and press Enter.  Check to see if your hard drive is listed.
  • If the hard drive is listed with unallocated space, it needs to be formatted. Right-click unallocated and click New Simple Volume. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the reformatting.

Note: Formatting a hard drive erases all of the data on it. Make sure that you back up all of your data before you reformat the hard drive.

  • If the hard drive is listed as healthy but does not have a drive letter assigned to it, for example, C:, right-click healthy and click Change Drive Letter and Paths. Click Add, assign a drive letter, and click OK.

Note: A formatted hard drive will not show up in Computer or My Computer until it has a drive letter assigned to it.

Yes, this mobile rack does support hot-swapping of SATA drives. To use this feature, it is required that the SATA port is set to Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI) mode and hot-swapping is enabled. On most motherboards, this is performed within the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) or the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI). If you are using a SATA controller card, consult the motherboard manufacturer's technical documentation for the correct steps to accomplish this.

Can't be beat!

By: Limey - 01/23/2015
Just installed and using it in minutes. It's standard StarTech construction, which is better than most generic equipment but down a grade from a factory HP or Dell item. Only beef is that the insertion rating is listed at 50,000 on the website but only 10,000 in the manual. At one insertion per week that's a difference of 700 years, I'm not happy!

Works fine for few weeks...

By: mekkano - 11/29/2015
This is very low quality product, I bought 4 units, two simply stop working and the other two work erratically. And it seems these are damaging the harddisks

By: Parasite - 07/18/2016
This is a comment for mekkano. There is no way these units can damage an hdd or ssd, except maybe an exterior hdd scratch or scuff. The connection do not use pcb and are simply like using sata cable extensions. Now if they stopped working or working erratically that would be very odd. And if that is true i would guess cheap sata cables are the cause. Its easy to check for a tech or people who have a multi-meter with continuity check. Disconnect the rack and touch meter to each side of the sata connectors and pins. Check for shorts between pins, check for no continuity between front and rear pins and most of all look at pins to see if they are damaged. Then if all else seems fine then try new sata cables and not cheapo's from some sites. you do get what you pay for and some sata cables use really small wire guage in the cables. so buy decent cables. And do not test like I said until unit is disconnected from computer and drive. And if the units are faulty contact support and see what they suggest. Hope this helps you and others

Great product

By: Mikie - 04/02/2017
I have been using this rack for well over a year and it has worked great for me. Easy to install and use, I have built computers and RAID for a few years now and I have 2 of these and plan on getting more. I am a electrical contractor and I do not give high praise alot but I do on this one. If you have any trouble with this I would say check other components first. I use a lot of startech products and I have No problem with any.

Drive lite Connection

By: R2D2 - 05/23/2018
The product is as defined, it works great with any of the various brands of SATA HDD's. I have it installed in an older HP 6000 Pro Core 2 Duo, E7600, however I can not determine where to connect the Tray lite. Unfortunately, the bezel lite on the case is module that does not match the tray cable.
