Frequently Asked Questions

Troubleshooting

When you troubleshoot issues with a hard drive rack, there are some quick tests that you can complete to rule out potential problems. You can test to make sure that the following components are working correctly and are not the source of the issue:

  • SATA and SAS cables
  • Hard drives
  • Hard drive rack

To test your setup components, try the following:

  • Use the cables, hard drives, and hard drive rack in another setup to see if the problem is with the components or the setup.
  • Use a different cable, hard drive, and hard drive rack in your setup to see if the problem persists. Ideally, you should test a component that you know works in another setup.

When you test the hard drive and hard drive rack, it is recommended that you do the following:

  • To check Disk Management, press the Windows key + R, type diskmgmt.msc, and press Enter.  Check to see if your hard drive is listed.
  • If the hard drive is listed with unallocated space, it needs to be formatted. Right-click unallocated and click New Simple Volume. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the reformatting.

Note: Formatting a hard drive erases all of the data on it. Make sure that you back up all of your data before you reformat the hard drive.

  • If the hard drive is listed as healthy but does not have a drive letter assigned to it, for example, C:, right-click healthy and click Change Drive Letter and Paths. Click Add, assign a drive letter, and click OK.

Note: A formatted hard drive will not show up in Computer or My Computer until it has a drive letter assigned to it.

Yes, this mobile rack does support hot-swapping of SATA drives. To use this feature, it is required that the SATA port is set to Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI) mode and hot-swapping is enabled. On most motherboards, this is performed within the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) or the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI). If you are using a SATA controller card, consult the motherboard manufacturer's technical documentation for the correct steps to accomplish this.

Greatly Improved!

By: palmdesertpat - 05/10/2019
I've been using these hot swap drive bays for many years, we've sold hundreds of them with all the PC's we build. They have gotten better as time went by, but the best improvement was made recently. Startech added clip retainer slots for the SATA cables. Now when we connect the SATA cables the clips "click" and stay securely in place. Before this improvement we had to perform a number of techniques to hold the cables in place. This was always the weak link in our systems. Way to go Startech, you are definitely listening and improving your products!

question about 'hot swap'.

By: sbumail - 10/25/2019
It seems to be understood that 'hot swap' means the ability to remove a HDD while the PC is **powered on** In your attached user guide, it clearly says at the top of Page 3 : "Please note: It is strongly recommended that the computer be POWERED DOWN when removing drives from HSB220SAT25B, as removing drives while in use can damage the drive and any data contained within." Is there some other device that needs to be connected between this and the PC to ensure the drives are powered down before they are removed??

Doesn't eject drives, drives don't fit, get stuck.

By: UnhappyWithStarTech - 01/21/2020
Thought this looked like good product, very disappointed! Doesn't eject the drives...I've tried drives by Intel, Micron, and WD...none work or fit correctly. Now my drives are scratched up from prying them out of the slots.

Matt, Customer Support on 2/3/2020 2:35:40 PM
Product quality is very important to us and we're sorry to hear about the problems you've experienced with our HSB220SAT25B. This enclosure shouldn't be having any issues ejecting drives but is only compatible with 2.5" drives that are 9.5mm thick or smaller. If you're using drives thicker than 9.5mm that may cause issues with the ejecting mechanism. We take these reports seriously and would like to speak with you further regarding this issue. Please contact us at www.startech.com/support where our Technical Advisors are available 24 hours a day, 5 days a week to provide support.
