The PATA2SATA3 is a bi-directional SATA IDE adapter/converter that lets you connect a Serial ATA drive to a legacy IDE port, or an IDE drive to a SATA motherboard port.

A cost-effective solution for upgrading existing IDE systems to support SATA hard drives or optical drives, the SATA/IDE adapter eliminates the expense of having to purchase a controller card while saving the expansion slot that would be required for card installation.

In addition to SATA hard drive installation, the adapter can be reversed in order to connect older IDE drives to a newer SATA-enabled motherboard, making it easy to retrieve old files from a previous system.

  • Connect newer SATA drives to an older motherboard with only IDE support
  • Connect an old IDE drive to a new SATA only motherboard to recover the data
  • Technicians who regularly need to work with both types of drives across different types of systems

The Advantage

  • A single, versatile adapter can be used to connect an IDE device to a SATA motherboard or vice-versa without any drivers or software installation
  • Supports not only hard drives, but CD/DVD optical drives as well
  • Backed by a 2-year warranty and free lifetime technical support

Frequently Asked Questions

Note: If you are using an IDE hard drive 1 Gigabyte in size or smaller, refer to the following FAQ:

If you are unable to detect your IDE (PATA) drive using a product, you may need to change the jumper settings on your drive. The jumpers switch the drive between Master, Slave, and Cable Select for most drives. A jumper is a small plastic piece that slides on top of two pins to electrically short them together.

When it does not mention what IDE drive configuration is required or if there is only one drive in the setup, the drive should be configured as Master. If Master is not working, try using the drive in Cable Select.

There is no standard position for the jumpers on IDE drives. On some drives, the jumper diagram is on the label that is on the top of the drive. On other drives, there are markings on the circuit board for CS, MA, and SL, which means a jumper shorts the pins vertically in that position. For more information, refer to the documentation provided by the manufacturer.

Before You Buy

Note: For more information on how to detect an IDE hard drive, visit

Older IDE drives are not supported by current products. Typically, these drives were made earlier than the mid-to-late 1990s and are smaller than 1 Gigabyte in size.

There are a number of reasons that older IDE drives may not be detected, including the following:

  • The drive uses PIO (Programmed Input/Output) mode and not DMA (Direct Memory Access).

  • The drive is non-ATA or is using an ATA mode that predates the chipset's compatibility (usually older than ATA-4).

  • The sector size is not 512 bytes.

Unfortunately there is no workaround in these situations. An older system or an older IDE controller card must be used to access older IDE drives.

I bought this adapter to retrieve files from an IDE disk drive that was in an older computer that failed. Not having a system with IDE interface to connect the drive to, I needed the adapter to connect to a system with a SATA drive interface. The adapter worked perfectly. If the system that you intend to use this adapter in does not have a LP4 Molex 4 pin power connector for the IDE drive, you will need a SATA to LP4 Power Cable Adapter - F/M, which is StarTech product ID LP4SATAFM6IN.

Only one that works with newer computers.

Only adapter we found that works with newer model computers. We use it in a classroom environment with removable IDE drives and it works perfectly

Wont work in new HP

By: Southern Guy - 12/16/2017
I bought this adapter to transfer a WD-250GB to a new HP Z240 workstation. It isn't recognized. All cables are connected correctly and the Power Indicator on the Interface is lit. Hard drive spins up, but nothing is recognized by the computer. Not even in the Device Manager. No drivers to update and nothing else to change. I wont give it a Quality rating, since it doesn't work.

Worked fine. Just needed to fix my HDD

By: Andre721 - 06/29/2018
I bought this because I had an old IDE hard drive laying around for years that I needed to clean the data out of. Here is something to keep in mind... if you are connecting an old IDE drive up, be sure that the jumpers are set properly (if applicable). For some odd reason, one of my jumpers was in the wrong position, so I thought the adapter wasn't working at first. Once I noticed the jumper and fixed it, everything worked fine.

A little misleading

By: WayneS - 07/14/2018
Have not been able to use this as you need a 40 ide male connector to plug it into if you cant plug into the motherboard.

We're sorry to hear the PATA2SATA3 didn't work for your application. To connect newer SATA drives to an older motherboard with only IDE support, an available IDE port or male connection is required since our adapter has a female IDE connector. Feel free to contact us directly if you have any further questions. Malcolm,

Moronic installation guide

By: I cant rate I cant use it - 09/06/2019
The guide mentions setting the DIP switch according to a diagram (step 1) The diagram does not exist. In step (4) it instructs the user to connect computer power supply to SATA hard drive but does not say with what or how?????????

We apologize for any difficulties you've experienced when installing our PATA2SATA3. The DIP switch diagram described can be found on the left side of the first page of the manual here: Also, step 4 is referencing the power cables that come built into the power supply in the PC. There should be no adapter cables or other cables needed which is why it does not specify any extra steps there. If you require assistance, we'd be happy to help with this. Not quite as good as it appears

By: CW33514 - 11/05/2019
Could not get it to work using a 40pin / 80 wire ribbon cable. I bought it to share an existing IDE connection with a SATA disc drive. But it does not work, even with just the SATA disc connected via the ribbon cable and this product. Dip switch settings for Master or Slave make no difference. They appear redundant anyway, as tech support say the product cannot operate with another disc drive connected. Disappointed. I have not tried to use the product to connect a IDE disc drive to a SATA PC port.

We're sorry to hear that our PATA2SATA3 is not working with your SATA drive. This adapter has a female IDE connection which is the same connector that most IDE ribbon cables use and the adapter is actually designed to connect directly to the IDE port on your motherboard. We recommend installing the adapter directly to the motherboard instead of through a ribbon cable. If you require any help with this, you can contact us for live assistance at where our Technical Advisors are available 24 hours a day, 5 days a week to provide support.

Didn't work with Samsung DVD drive

We're sorry to hear about the difficulties you've experienced using our PATA2SATA3 with your Samsung DVD drive. This adapter allows a SATA device to connect to an IDE motherboard or an IDE device to connect to a SATA motherboard and should be compatible with Samsung drives but it requires the SP4 power to be connected to the adapter. We'd be happy to speak with you to help investigate the issue if you require assistance. Can't get it to work

By: robert12 - 02/17/2021
IDE2SATA: I worked 4 hours trying to get it to work. I tried everything. My computer won't even get past the BIOS with this device attached. I tried every combo of the switches, even though the tiny print says it doesn't matter. 'Slave' is the only one that allowed me to access BIOS setup, where I saw that both drives were recognized. My hdd is supported too. The LED were blinking away, and the hdd was running.

Finally got it to work

By: DBANrunner - 08/25/2021
I got it to work after many tries. First of all, all of the ports on the adapter and the hard drive need to be showing, so I finally figured out just to remove the drive and set it on top of the computer. I had no other drives installed. The connections are: adapter to IDE 40-pin, SP4 ("floppy") 4-pin power connector to the adapter, SATA cable from motherboard to adapter "to computer" orange port, SATA power cable to included SATA to LP4 molex cable, and then LP4 to hard drive power input. My drive was so old it could not boot but I was able to boot from DBAN (Darik's Boot and Nuke) on a CD and erase the drive, which is what I was trying to do. Thanks StarTech! I have two drives to do so I will make a profit on this purchase (unless you count my time geeking out here).
