Overview

The PEX2S553S 2-Port PCI Express Serial Card lets you add two ESD-Protected RS232 ports with 5V or 12V selectable power output, through a PCI Express slot.

Ideal for industrial environments, this 2-port serial card offers built-in 15KV ESD-protection which helps prevent damage to connected devices in the event of line surges and electro-static discharge. An extended operating temperature range (-30°C to 75°C) also helps to ensure performance in harsh environments.

For devices that require additional power, this serial controller has a jumper-selectable 5V or 12V power output option (pin 1 and/or pin 9), through an LP4 connection to your power supply. For added flexibility, the power output can be enabled or disabled on a per-port basis so you choose which port(s) supply power.

This versatile RS232 card supports high-speed serial data rates up to 921.6 Kbps, and is compliant with PCIe Gen 2.0 specifications for added bandwidth. To maximize installation options, the 2-port card is equipped with a standard profile bracket and includes an optional low-profile/half-height bracket for installation in small form factor computers.

How to

To confirm that Windows detects your expansion card, complete the following:

  1. Press the Windows key+R, type devmgmt.msc, and press Enter.
  2. In Device Manager, under the appropriate heading, confirm that your expansion card is listed and that there isn't an exclamation mark next to it.  For example, a USB controller card would be under Universal Serial Bus controllers.

Your expansion card is listed according to the name of the chipset. To determine the name of the chipset of your expansion card, navigate to www.StarTech.com and look on the Technical Specifications tab for your product.

Troubleshooting

When you troubleshoot issues with a serial device, there are some quick tests that you can complete to rule out potential problems. You can test to make sure that the following components are working correctly and are not the source of the issue:

  • Serial cables

  • Serial ports

  • Serial devices

To test your setup components, try the following:

  • Use the serial cable, serial port, and serial device in another setup to see if the problem is with the components or the setup.

  • Use a different serial cable, serial port, and serial device in your setup to see if the problem persists. Ideally, you should test a component that you know works in another setup.

When you test your cables, it is recommended that you do the following:

  • Test each cable individually.

  • Use short cables when you are testing.

When you test the serial ports and serial device, it is recommended that you do the following:

Note: Some serial devices work only if the COM port number is between a certain range. For example, COM1 to COM4.

To check whether or not an RS-232 serial port is working, perform an RS-232 loopback test by doing the following:

  1. If your serial port is not female, convert it by taking a female/female cable or gender changer and plugging it into the serial port.
  2. Take a metal paperclip or wire and cross pins 2 and 3. If you look closely at the female end, the pins should be numbered.
  3. Open a telnet session on the COM port number of the device that you are testing. To find out the COM port number, refer to the following FAQ: https://www.startech.com/faq/com-port-listing-windows.

Note: To open a telnet session on the COM port, you need a telnet client like PuTTY or Hyper Terminal. Windows XP comes with Hyper Terminal.

  1. When the session is open, anything you type into it you should see. The loopback test fails when you cannot see what you are typing.

If the loopback test fails, make sure that the serial cable or gender changer that you are using works and that the adapter is in the correct port. 

You can check multiple ports at the same time by opening multiple sessions, putting the loopback adapter on one port, and trying to type into each session.  When you can see what you are typing, you know that the COM port is working and you can see which port number the physical serial port is. Close the window for the port that you just tested to speed up the testing of the remaining serial ports.

Only support up to ancient kernel 3.5! Current kernel of Debian 7 LTS version 3.16 isn't supported. So statement for support of kernels up to version 4.4 is wrong.

(4 stars) Solves a problem...

Being a Ham Radio Operator a lot of the devices we use require a serial port. Many of the USB to Serial adaptors just don't work very well. It was nice to have found this card on Amazon.com. Not only is it nicely priced but works very well. Only problem I see is that Windows 7 does not automatically recognize the card so you have to install the included drivers. Once the drivers are installed the card works great and the drivers give a nice range of options to customize for your system. I would have gave 5 Stars if Windows would have detected it and went out and fetched the drivers. All in all I say if you need serial ports I would recommend it.
