Frequently Asked Questions

Before You Buy

Installation

Note: The information in this FAQ is based upon the assumption that the print server is installed and can be configured via a wired or wireless connection. For more information about connecting hardware, refer to the product manual or visit http://www.startech.com/faq/wireless_print_servers_pm1115ua_connection_information.

To bridge the PM1115UA, you require the following information about your network infrastructure:

  1. The SSID (wireless network name).

  2. The wireless security key(s).

  3. The existing network IP information (for example, the DHCP server IP address).

The network configuration information can usually be found on the network router.

To bridge the PM1115UA in an existing wireless network infrastructure, complete the following:

  1. Make sure that your network adapter is on the same network as your print server (by default, 192.168.0.XXX). For more information on how to change your IP address, refer to the following FAQ: https://www.startech.com/support/faqs/technical-support?topic=networking#ip-address-change-windows-mac-os.

  2. Connect an Ethernet cable from the print server to the computer system.

  3. Open the StarTech.com USB Print Server Control Center software.

  4. Right-click your print server and click Configure Server.

  5. Click Connect to another AP.

  6. Next to your wireless network, click Select.

  7. If required, enter the wireless key and click Connect.

  8. Wait for your server to restart.

  9. Disconnect the Ethernet cable from the print server to the computer system.

  10. Connect the Ethernet cable from the print server to your router / switch.

Note: It may take a few minutes for the print server to be detected again by the web browser.

On your router or wireless access point, you should see the print server listed as connected.

The print server is still using the default IP address and you need to change it to an IP address that works with your network. When the print server is on the same network as your other network devices, you can add it as a network printer.

In most network infrastructures, the IP address is dynamically assigned. Since router configurations can change, you should assign your print server a static address so that the computers on the network can find the print server at that address (for example, 192.168.0.100).

To change your print server to a statically assigned IP address, complete the following:

  1. Find an IP address that is compatible with your network. For example, the 192.168.1.1 network can support 192.168.1.XXX where XXX is a number between 2 and 254.

  2. In WAN, clear the Automatic IP(DHCP) check box.

  3. Change the IP Address and Subnet Mask to match your network configuration.

  4. Click Update.

How to

By default, the PM1115UA broadcasts a wireless network SSID in infrastructure mode. When the print server is configured to broadcast an SSID (wireless network ID), the print server can only be used by one wireless network adapter. Unless the wireless network adapter is bridged into a network infrastructure, the amount of computer connections to the print server is limited to one.

For most applications, the wireless network print server will need to be integrated into an existing network infrastructure. This allows different computers on your network to access your print server. For more information about how to set up bridging into another network infrastructure, visit http://www.startech.com/faq/wireless_print_servers_pm1115ua_bridging_into_network.

When you want to use the PM1115UA as a wireless access point, the Ethernet port is a quick way to connect to a network infrastructure. By default, the PM1115UA, dynamically obtains an IP address from your existing network infrastructure. The IP address is bridged to the wireless network on the PM1115UA, which turns the print server into a wireless access point. If you want to have only one network SSID, you need to disable the Broadcast SSID on the print server.

The PM1115UA can broadcast an SSID to be an access point and simultaneously bridge into a existing infrastructure. This allows you to extend your network infrastructure to a different SSID.

To configure the print server, you need to directly connect the print server to a PC system. The default IP address is 192.168.0.100 and you need to make sure that your computer is on the 192.168.0.XXX network to make any configuration changes over Ethernet. For more information on how to change your IP address, refer to the following FAQ: https://www.startech.com/support/faqs/technical-support?topic=networking#ip-address-change-windows-mac-os.

Troubleshooting

You should not upgrade your device's firmware if you do not have any issues with the functionality of your device. The only time you should consider an upgrade is if you are experiencing a problem with the device, and you have confirmed that the firmware addresses this problem.  You can confirm this is the case by reviewing the documentation included with the firmware or by consulting with our Technical Support team. Incorrectly upgrading firmware can result in diminished performance so it is best to contact StarTech.com if you would like to perform this operation.
