Overview

This Gigabit USB-over-IP device server offers a simple and convenient way to extend and share a USB device over long distances, and it works with multiple users connected to your network. Plus, the device server supports Gigabit (1000Mbps) speeds, so your connected devices function faster than traditional 10/100Mbps device servers.

The versatile device server connects directly to your PC, or it works with your existing network devices (for example, hubs, routers, switches) so it can easily integrate into your current network infrastructure. It’s ideal for connecting and sharing USB devices (for example, card readers, digital cameras, webcams, printers, and scanners) with multiple networked users. Plus, you can use multiple device servers on the same network, letting you connect and share even more USB peripherals.

The USB-over-IP device server includes Windows based software that provides a simple interface to connect, monitor, and control the connected device over your local area network (LAN). Plus, the software communicates directly with the device server, so it can be used in Virtual Machine (VM) environments if you have multiple VMs sharing the same set of hardware.

The USB1000IP is backed by a StarTech.com 2-year warranty and free lifetime technical support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Installation

Prior to installing this device, ensure that your operating system is up to date (for example, you have installed the most recent service pack).

To install the USB Server Software:

  1. Download the latest software package from the StarTech.com website (http://www.startech.com/Support). You can find the part number and product ID on the product’s packaging.

Note: Windows will typically save the files to the Downloads folder that is associated with your user account (for example, C:\Users\your_name\Downloads).

  1. Once the download is complete, right-click the zip folder that you downloaded, select Extract All, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  2. Select the appropriate folder for your operating system.
  3. Right-click Setup.exe
  4. Click Run as Administrator.

Note: If the Run as Administrator option is not available, you might be attempting to run the installer from within the zipped file. Extract the files using the instructions in Step 2.

  1. Follow the on-screen prompts to install the software and restart the computer when prompted.
  2. Your computer will automatically complete the software installation and your device should be ready to use.

Set up the software

Confirm that the extender is on the same network as your computer. If you are using a network with DHCP, you do not need to configure anything further.

If you are using an Ethernet cable to connect to the unit or you are using a network without DHCP, you need to change the IP address on your computer to the default IP network of the IP device server. Change the IP address of your system to 192.168.1.XXX, where XXX is a number between 1 and 49.

Note: The default IP address of the extender is 192.168.1.50 on the default subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.

USB Server software

Your extender is detected by the USB Server software when the software is launched.

Note: It may take a few minutes for the server to appear in the software.

When the extender appears in the list (for example, USB2HDMI), click either the display or media device associated with the server. Click on one of the devices and then click Connect Device.

When the USB Server software configuration is complete, the display and media devices are connected to your system as though the devices are installed locally. By default, Windows creates an extended desktop for the display, which you can reconfigure in the control panel.

Troubleshooting

If the device is not detected in the USB Server software, complete the following:

  • Make sure that the computer is on the same network as the device.
  • By default, the device uses DHCP. On a network that is plug-and-play, the device is assigned an IP address by the DHCP server and is detected by a computer that is on the same network as the device.
  • To troubleshoot the device, connect it directly to a computer on the 192.168.1 network. For more information about configuring the USB Server software, refer to the following FAQ: http://www.startech.com/faq/ipusb2vga_ipusb2hd2_usb_server_software.
  • If the network configuration of the device was changed, you cannot complete a hardware reset to put the unit back on 192.168.1.50. Instead, you need to obtain the static IP address from the person who modified the server.
  • Wait 5 minutes for the USB Server software to detect the device.
  • Move the device to a less congested network.

You should not upgrade your device's firmware if you do not have any issues with the functionality of your device. The only time you should consider an upgrade is if you are experiencing a problem with the device, and you have confirmed that the firmware addresses this problem.  You can confirm this is the case by reviewing the documentation included with the firmware or by consulting with our Technical Support team. Incorrectly upgrading firmware can result in diminished performance so it is best to contact StarTech.com if you would like to perform this operation.

(3 stars) Nice Gizmo for home users

By:
I got this product from Startech to test and it is ok if you just need to have it at home as a shared drive but, I don't recommend it for a business office because i experience some connectivity issues on couple occasions. Please make sure to read the installation steps otherwise you will be looking into a bunch of folders until you find what you need. (4 stars) Would Definately Recommend this Product

By:
I was surprised to see some of the negative reviews on this product and I went in skeptical but it didn't stop me from trying it myself. I hooked up a USB hard drive and then installed the server software. It found my hard drive immediately and connected it as if it was hooked directly to my computer. I started transferring multi-gigs worth of data and I was getting a steady 24MB/s transfer (as expected over USB.). I did not have any of the issues that other users had like the disconnecting after 30min to an hour. The device stayed online for multiple days during testing. If you right click the device in the server software there is an option to "Connect Device Automatically" so maybe that's why I didn't have any of the issues other people had? One thing I didn't like about this product is that the power cable doesn't seem to fit properly and easily pulls out of the device if you are handling it. Otherwise, if you have a USB device that you want to put on the network then I would definitely recommend this product. I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.

(3 stars) Convenient for Multiple Users

By:
A convenient way for several of our laptop users to share an optical drive or USB drive. Setup/configuration was simple and reconnected automatically after rebooting. Downside was sporadically it would lose the connection and we'd have to power the device on and off. Disclaimer - I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.

Thanks for taking the time to leave your feedback. We want to apologize that our USB1000IP did not work as well as needed. This unit can be affected by other network traffic. It can be helpful to rule out the network being used. Does the USB1000IP behave the same way when connected directly to a computer's Ethernet port? If you would like to discuss this situation in greater details please reach out to us at: https://www.startech.com/support Thank you.

(1 star) Losing IP Constantly

By:
As others are saying this device loses it's connection after about 30 minutes to an hour. The only recourse is to power cycle it. I have tested it with static addresses and also on an isolated network. Same result.

(1 star) Same Issues As Other Customers Experiencing

By:
The device fails to maintain a stable connection. Stays online for 20-40 minutes and then disappears from the network. Web interface is inaccessible at that point and only power-cycling is able to revive the device. Our network contains roughly 50 static IP devices all on a single subnet, so the probability of DHCP conflict is non-existent. By the look of it, drivers aren't an issue, but the internal firmware of this USB server. I'm hoping StarTech investigates problems that clients such as myself are experiencing and releases a firmware update. Otherwise the deice is practically useless.

(1 star) useless

By:
I purchased this device a month ago and when I finally got around to trying it the unit would only work for 5 to 10 minutes once powered. Once the unit dies it was unreachable via ping and the StarTech app. I tried using dhcp and a hard ip address with the same results. The unit was returned to StarTech for replacement and my "new" unit behaves exactly the same way. I should have looked at the previous reviews of this product.

Hello Ed, Thank you for taking the time to review our USB1000IP USB device server. We are sorry to hear about the connectivity issues and we would like to offer some help. After reviewing the case notes in our system it looks like you have already tested this device with multiple systems and configurations though there is one other suggestion we have to troubleshoot this issue. Would you be able to try the USB1000IP in an isolated environment with only the PC, the USB device server, and the USB device? This would require that both the device server and computer have static addresses set. This would eliminate any potential network related issues. We are always here to help with our free lifetime technical support. If this did not resolve your issue, please get in touch with us and reference case #332-292128 so we can further assist you. You can also reply here and we will be sure to follow up. Thank You, Customer Support StarTech.com http://www.startech.com/support

(1 star) Poor reliability

By:
After using it for one year, the conclussion is that it provides no reliability. You need to keep power cycling the unit every day, otherwise, the unit "dissapears" from the network (loses IP address).

Hello, Thank you for reviewing our USB1000IP USB over IP device server. We would like to offer some assistance. This issue may be due to an IP address conflict. If you find the unit is losing its IP address every day, then the use of a static IP address may help prevent this occurrence. A static IP address could be set up by opening the "USB Server" application and right clicking on the "USB Server", shown with its IP address. The "Server Configuration" option window provides the ability to choose a static IP address. You can also try replacing the network cable, and connecting this unit to another Ethernet port to see if the same issue persists. We hope this has been helpful. In the event you need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us directly, and kindly reference case number 303-226387.
