Frequently Asked Questions

Before You Buy

Digital Visual Interface (DVI) is a video display interface that can contain different types of signaling, based on the application. DVI cables and ports are created using different connector types to identify what application they are intended to be used in. The connector types are identified by the number of pins on the DVI connector. DVI comes in the following five different connector types:

Single and Dual link DVI indicate the maximum resolution capabilities of the video source or video destination. The maximum resolutions are Single Link (1920 x 1080 @ 60Hz) and Dual Link (2560 x 1600 @ 60Hz).

Note: The maximum resolution of your video source and video destination are ultimately determined by the technical specifications of the devices. The connector type is not a definitive indicator of the maximum resolution.

DVI-A carries only analog (for example, VGA) with no digital component. DVI-D carries only digital video (for example, HDMI) with no analog component. DVI-I combines DVI-A and DVI-D connections to include both analog and digital components. A DVI-I port may be on either your video source or display, but whether or not a display carries either or both analog and digital sources depends on the technical specifications of your device.

USB-C is a type of USB connector that is capable of supporting the following:

  • Data transfer speeds up to 10Gbps, if you use USB 3.1.
  • Bi-directional power delivery up to 100W, if both the USB host connection and the device support it.
  • Alternate modes, which deliver different types of data at different speeds. For example, DisplayPort Alternate Mode (DP Alt Mode).

If using Thunderbolt 3 over USB-C, the connection is capable of additional features. For example, Thunderbolt 3 is capable of 40Gbps of total bandwidth. For more information, refer to the following FAQ: https://www.startech.com/faq/thunderbolt-3-port-capabilities.

Not all USB-C ports or devices are capable of supporting all of the features listed above, or all of the features at the maximum capabilities. If you require a specific USB-C feature, your USB host connection, cables, and device must all support the feature that you require. For more information about whether your components support specific USB-C features, refer to the information provided by the manufacturers.

This USB-C device requires that all of the following components support alternate modes:

  • The USB-C host connection (for example, a computer and its port)
  • The USB-C cable
  • The USB-C device (for example, a hard drive docking station)

If your host device includes a Thunderbolt™ 3 connection, this USB-C device will work with your host device.

For more information about the modes that your setup components support, refer to the information provided by the manufacturers.

Installation

This device is plug and play. It does not use any drivers, and does not require any setup tasks other than plugging in the source (for example, a computer) and the destination (for example, a monitor).

Troubleshooting

When you troubleshoot issues with a video adapter, there are some quick tests that you can complete to rule out potential problems. You can test to make sure that the following components are working correctly and are not the source of the issue:

  • Video cables

  • Video adapter

  • Video source (such as a DVD player or computer)

  • Video destination (such as a monitor or projector)

To test your setup components, try the following:

  • Use the cable, video adapter, video source, and video destination in another setup to see if the problem is with the components or the setup.

  • Use a different cable, video adapter, video source, and video destination in your setup to see if the problem persists. Ideally, you should test a component that you know works in another setup.

When you test your cables, it is recommended that you do the following:

  • Test each cable individually.

  • Use short cables when you are testing.

When you test the video source and video destination, it is recommended that you do the following:

  • Remove the video adapter from your setup and test to make sure that the video source and video destination work together without the video adapter.

  • Test to make sure that the video source and video destination work together at the resolution that you want to use.

Note: In order for your setup to work properly, the video source, adapter, and destination all need to support the resolution that you are using.

The error “Out of Range” normally means that the resolution being output by the computer is not compatible with the display. Try lowering the resolution to see if that helps resolve the issue.  You may need to connect another monitor or restart the computer or source to accomplish this.

(5 stars) Great DVI adapter

By:
Until I upgrade my older monitor, this little adapter is just what I need. It works perfectly every time I plug it in, to any DVI Monitor. I leave it on my DVI cable and just plug in when I’m at my desk. Well built, the cord is the right length and doesn’t get in the way. One thing to note, this did not work with most DVI-VGA adapters I tried, so if you’re trying to connect VGA, there are other adapters to look for! I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review

(5 stars) USB-C Displayport Adapter

By:
When I think of StarTech I think of reliability, consistency, quality and great technical support. This product covers three of those four items. I just purchased some new Viewsonic 24in DVI monitors for my desk and my old DVI adapters could not support the resolution the new monitors had to offer. Startech offered a great solution and a very inexpensive price to fix my problem. With the new adapters I am amazed at how much better the quality of my monitors are.

(1 star) Not compatible with DELL3007WFPHC

By:
I hope I had read the the review review earlier before I bought two units. I got only HALF of the resolution of 2560x1600!! This compatibility issues should be made more apparent in the product overview!!!! It's so misleading!!!!!

Thanks for sharing your review with us. Unfortunately, this adapter is not likely to work with the Dell 3007WFP of the similar Apple Cinema Display with DVI. Those older displays require a true DVI dual link signal, which explains why the Apple mDP to DVI adapter worked for you. That Apple adapter and our similar versions support a true DVI Dual Link signal over the DisplayPort connector. The CDP2DVI adapter sends a high enough bandwidth signal to push the 2560x1600 resolutions, but the two above-mentioned displays will not accept the signal correctly. We hope this has been helpful and we are sorry for the inconvenience you've encountered using our adapter. If you would like to discuss this any further, please get in touch with our Technical Advisors by clicking "Support" at the top of our website. Thank you

(3 stars) Does not work with 30 Inch Cinema Display

By:
MacBook detects the display. Turns on the back light but displays no picture. The computer believes it is on at full resolution but no display at all. Purchased with the hopes it would drive this fantastic older monitor from my newer MacBook Pro. Bummer.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on our CDP2DVI adapter. Hopefully, we can offer some clarity as to why your adapter is not working with the new MacBook and an older Cinema display. Older DVI-based displays, including your Cinema display, and others like Dell's 3007WFP require a true DVI-D Dual-Link signal. Something that this adapter, the CDP2DVI, does not provide. It can deliver a high enough bandwidth signal from the USB-C port, but the monitor will not accept it. Newer displays typically do not have an issue with this signal type. Do you by chance have a different DVI display you could test with the CDP2DVI? If you do, this will help confirm this interoperability. If you would like to discuss this further, please get in touch with our Technical Advisory Team but clicking the "Support" tab at the top of our website. Thank you

Which of your adapters do you recommend to go from USB-C to true DVI Dual-Link for the 2560x1600 30" Dell 3007WFP, if this adapter is not true Dual-Link?
