This is no ordinary video adapter. Yes, it enables you to connect the USB-C™ port on your computer to an HDMI® display or projector, but it also features a unique Presentation Mode switch. When you turn on this switch, the adapter prevents your computer from launching its screen saver, going to sleep or entering power save mode. The adapter ensures that your screen will always stay on, making it the perfect USB-C video adapter for any presentation or meeting.

Keep your audience engaged with your presentation

Photo illustrates a laptop computer using the adapter to present

When you deliver a presentation, your goal is to engage with your audience, not your computer. But, if you don't move your mouse soon enough, or change your power settings, your screen goes black due to inactivity while you're addressing the audience. This can be a major distraction when you're trying to focus on the message you're communicating.

This adapter prevents screen disruptions with Presentation Mode, a unique feature that automatically initiates occasional cursor movement to prevent your computer’s power settings from interrupting your presentation. It’s perfect for sharing websites, drawings, spreadsheets, PDFs or slide shows during your meeting.

Turn Presentation Mode on or off

You can turn Presentation Mode on or off depending on your application. Turn it on when you're in the boardroom and want your screen to stay on, and turn it off when you’re using the adapter at your workspace or office hot desk, to enable your computer's original power settings to take effect. Using the toggle switch is easy, and saves you the hassle of constantly making adjustments in your operating system settings.

Hassle-free setup and operation on Mac and PC

To ensure easy operation and installation, this unique adapter is natively supported on Windows® and Mac computers. It’s easy to connect the adapter using the versatile USB Type-C™ port on your computer. The reversible USB-C connector means you will always plug it in correctly on your first try, which saves you the hassle and distraction of repeatedly attempting to connect your laptop to a display or projector.

Supports 4K resolution at 60Hz

This adapter lets you harness the video capabilities that are built into your computer's USB Type-C connection, to deliver astonishing UHD 4K 60Hz resolution to your HDMI 2.0 display. This makes it easier for you to multitask while you work on the most resource-demanding applications imaginable.

With this adapter, you can achieve an output resolution of up to 3840 x 2160p at 60Hz, which is perfect for performing high-resolution tasks such as viewing 4K video. Plus, the adapter is backward compatible with 1080p displays, which makes it a great travel accessory ensuring you can connect to any boardroom display or projector.

The CDP2HD4K60SA is backed by a 3-year StarTech.com warranty and free lifetime technical support.

Note: Your USB-C equipped device must support video to work with this adapter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Installation

This device is plug and play. It does not use any drivers, and does not require any setup tasks other than plugging in the source (for example, a computer) and the destination (for example, a monitor).

Troubleshooting

When you troubleshoot issues with a USB video adapter, there are some quick tests that you can complete to rule out potential problems. You can test to make sure that the following components are working correctly and are not the source of the issue:

  • Video cables

  • Video source

  • Video destination

  • USB video adapter

To test your setup components, try the following:

  • Use the video cables, video source, video destination, and USB video adapter in another setup to see if the problem is with the components or the setup.

  • Use a different video cable, video source, video destination, and USB video adapter in your setup to see if the problem persists. Ideally, you should test a component that you know works in another setup.

When you test your cables, it is recommended that you do the following:

  • Test each cable individually.

  • Use short cables when you are testing.

When you test the video cables, video source, video destination, and USB video adapter, it is recommended that you do the following:

  • Check Device Manager under Display adapters, Universal Serial Bus controllers, or USB Display adapters. To do this, press the Windows key + R, type devmgmt.msc, and press Enter to open Device Manager.

  • If you do not see the USB video adapter in Device Manager, refer to the following FAQ: https://www.startech.com/support/faqs/technical-support?topic=expansion-cards#usb-cannot-detect-windows.

  • If the device is listed with an error, reinstall the drivers following the instructions on the website.

  • Check to see if your video card drivers are current. You can check what video card you have in Device Manager under Display adapters. It is recommended that you go directly to the video card manufacturer's website to check for the latest drivers.

  • Check to see if the monitor is being detected by Windows.

To check to see if Windows is detecting the monitor using a computer that is running a version of Windows XP, do the following:

  • Right-click on the desktop and click Properties.
  • Click the Settings tab.
  • If you see Drag the monitor icons to match the physical arrangement of your monitors, it means that Windows is detecting more than a single monitor. You can click the drop-down menu under Display to see which monitors are detected. This option is not available if Windows only detects a single monitor.

To check to see if Windows is detecting the monitor using a computer that is running a version of Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8, do the following:

  • Right-click on the desktop and click Screen Resolution.
  • You can click the drop-down menu under Display to see which monitors are detected.

The error “Out of Range” normally means that the resolution being output by the computer is not compatible with the display. Try lowering the resolution to see if that helps resolve the issue.  You may need to connect another monitor or restart the computer or source to accomplish this.

How To

To arrange extended displays on Windows 10, complete the following.

  1. Press the Windows key+R, type desk.cpl, and press Enter.
  2. Under the ‘Multiple Displays’ selection, select ‘Extend Desktop To This Display.’
  3. Press ‘Identify’ to determine what number each display is assigned to.
  4. Drag and drop each display accordingly to the physical layout on your desk.
  5. Click the Apply button.

To arrange extended displays on macOS, complete the following.

  1. Navigate to the Apple Menu > System Preferences, click Displays, then click Arrangement
  2. Make sure that the ‘Mirror Displays’ checkbox is not selected.
  3. Click on each display to determine what number each display is assigned to.
  4. Drag and drop each display accordingly to the physical layout on your desk.

Before You Buy

USB-C is a type of USB connector that is capable of supporting the following:

  • Data transfer speeds up to 10Gbps, if you use USB 3.1.
  • Bi-directional power delivery up to 100W, if both the USB host connection and the device support it.
  • Alternate modes, which deliver different types of data at different speeds. For example, DisplayPort Alternate Mode (DP Alt Mode).

If using Thunderbolt 3 over USB-C, the connection is capable of additional features. For example, Thunderbolt 3 is capable of 40Gbps of total bandwidth. For more information, refer to the following FAQ: https://www.startech.com/faq/thunderbolt-3-port-capabilities.

Not all USB-C ports or devices are capable of supporting all of the features listed above, or all of the features at the maximum capabilities. If you require a specific USB-C feature, your USB host connection, cables, and device must all support the feature that you require. For more information about whether your components support specific USB-C features, refer to the information provided by the manufacturers.

This USB-C device requires that all of the following components support alternate modes:

  • The USB-C host connection (for example, a computer and its port)
  • The USB-C cable
  • The USB-C device (for example, a hard drive docking station)

If your host device includes a Thunderbolt™ 3 connection, this USB-C device will work with your host device.

For more information about the modes that your setup components support, refer to the information provided by the manufacturers.

HDMI 2.0 offers some new features that were not available with the HDMI 1.4 standard, including the following:

  • 4K resolution (4096x2160) at 60 Hz
  • 21:9 aspect ratio support
  • Four audio streams
  • High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) version 2.2

Although HDMI 2.0 is backwards compatible with older HDMI standards, newer HDMI devices need to support HDCP 2.2 in order to display new content. If you use an HDMI device that only supports HDCP 2.0, an error will be displayed when you try to display content that has HDCP 2.2.

USB-C to HDMI Presentation Adapter Made Easy

By: JamesH - 02/18/2017
I have been in the technology business for over 35 years and for the past 20+ years I have been asked to provide unbiased reviews of various products from both the AV and IT world. In review of this product I have found that in Presentation Mode this product ensures that the video output is not interrupted by your computer’s power-saving modes by slightly moving the cursor periodically. This is a time saver and a must for the road warrior who provides client presentations, by avoiding the hassle of adjusting power settings, with an easy-to-use toggle switch that lets you turn Presentation Mode on or off. This device works on both Mac and Windows computers. In the box: -USB-C to HDMI Presentation Adapter - 4K 60Hz -Instruction Manual In summation, solid product, easy to use. I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.

Excellent

By: Goaldad34 - 03/06/2017
This adapter provided a simple solution for our users to connect to different client devices for meetings and presentations. The adapters ability to prevent 'sleep mode' is a plus when participating in lengthy meetings. Small footprint is a plus for transporting although the short cable may leave the adapter dangling on tablets.

Great Portable presentation adapter

By: Andrew11 - 03/17/2017
I really like this adapter for its ability to keep the display on during presentations, especially while on laptop battery power. Its small size and sturdy construction are what I have come to expect from Startech.com adapters. The video and audio output is outstanding, especially for such a small adapter. I originally thought the Presentation Mode switch was too small, but then realized that I will always leave this in the ON position, so it’s not a big deal at all! I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review
