Installation

Starting in High Sierra 10.13, macOS enforces stricter security policies than previous revisions. As a result of these changes, software packages, like those used in this installation, will need to be allowed within the macOS Security and Privacy settings, immediately after the software has been installed, in order for the device to operate.

To allow the software, follow these steps after you've completed installation on your Mac:

  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Open Security & Privacy.
  3. Click the Allow button near the bottom of the General tab.

Note: The option to allow the software will be available within the Security & Privacy settings for 30 minutes. If the software is not allowed within that time frame, the software must be reinstalled in order for macOS to grant the opportunity to allow it again.

Computers running macOS Catalina (10.15) may experience compatibility issues with products that use DisplayLink technology, such as USB Docking Stations and Video Adapters. Connecting to a DisplayLink-powered Product may cause the Display(s) to output a blank screen. If you experience this problem, follow these steps:

  1. Update computer to the latest version of macOS 10.15
  2. Permit Screen Recording by following these steps: macOS Catalina 10.15: Screen Recording permission (external link)
  3. Enable the DisplayLink Kernel Extension by following these steps: macOS 10.13, 10.14 and 10.15: Video functionality not enabled (external link)
  4. If the problem persists, try installing the DisplayLink Manager Application (external link). Be sure to run the application after installation and select “Launch automatically after logging-in” for it to start automatically every time you log-in.

When you troubleshoot issues with a laptop docking station, there are some quick tests that you can complete to rule out potential problems. You can test to make sure that the following components are working correctly and are not the source of the issue:

  • Video cables

  • Video source

  • Video destination

  • Laptop docking station

  • USB peripherals

  • Ethernet connection

To test your setup components, try the following:

  • Use the video cables, video source, video destination, laptop docking station, USB peripherals, and Ethernet connection in another setup to see if the problem is with the components or the setup.

  • Use a different video cable, video source, video destination, laptop docking station, USB peripherals, and Ethernet connection setup to see if the problem persists. Ideally, you should test a component that you know works in another setup.

When you test your cables, it is recommended that you do the following:

  • Test each cable individually.

  • Use short cables when you are testing.

When you test the video cables, video source, video destination, and laptop docking station it is recommended that you do the following:

  1. Press the Windows key + R, type devmgmt.msc, and press Enter to open Device Manager.

  2. If you do not see the USB video adapter in Device Manager, refer to the following FAQ: https://www.startech.com/support/faqs/technical-support?topic=expansion-cards#usb-cannot-detect-windows.

  3. If the device is listed with an error, reinstall the drivers following the instructions on the website.

  4. Check to see if your video card drivers are current. You can check what video card you have in Device Manager under Display adapters. It is recommended that you go directly to the video card manufacturer's website to check for the latest drivers.

  5. Check to see if the monitor is being detected by Windows.

Great features, and well built

By: Macphoto1970_5 - 05/13/2018
This is a great docking station for people who want simple and easy connection. This dock is well built and has just enough weight to it to sit firmly on the desk with cables as to not move around too much. I have tried similar docks from other manufactures and this one tends to stay in one place better. I like the simplicity of a simple connection of usb-c or usb 3.0. I had no issues with hookup to my windows based laptop and found everything worked as planned. The monitor resolution and image was great when used and I could see no artifacting at all. I appreciate the ethernet port as so many laptops are dropping this feature but in the office having a solid hard wired connection is always a nice addition. Overall the quality is excellent. Excellent Dock

By: nivek - 05/16/2018
This docking station has all the ports you need for a laptop. It has enough weight and grip that it did not slide around on my desk due to cable weight. I really enjoyed having 6 USB3.0 ports.

Excellent Dock!

By: ShawnO_1 - 05/16/2018
Setup is simple and one can be up and running very quickly. It astounds me that the unit can have so many ports while remaining so compact. The rubber feet grip the desk nicely and with it's small size it is unobtrusive on the desk. Works as expected to power two additional monitors. Universal Dock that Never Lags

By: NickD_CA47 - 05/18/2018
I have tested this dock using several laptops both with the USB-A and USB-C connections. Each time it took a while to install but performed great afterwards. The dock comes in a box about half the size of a breakfast cereal box lengthwise. The dock is made out of plastic but looks very premium and could be mistaken for metal before touching it. The dock has 6 USB ports, 2 HDMI, 2 DVI, 1 Network and Mic/Speaker ports for audio. To use the dock you need to plug it in using the supplied AC adaptor and have the power switch turned on. The port to connect to a computer is a USB-C port and it comes with both a USB-C to USB-A cable and a USB-C to USB-C cable. When I fist connected this dock to a new computer using USB-C nothing seemed to happen. I waited a bit for installations to occur but none went. After trying a few things, I found that I needed to have my laptop already connected to the internet, then on next connection it downloaded all necessary drivers and was working within minutes. On a different older computer using USB-A cable, I got a message "USB device not recognized". After waiting a couple minutes for the computer to download and install all drivers, it was working without any issues. The displays are very fast through the dock and during my testing I never noticed any lag or choppiness from the displays. Connecting the dock after everything was setup was quick and simple, although I still get the USB error when it's connected but everything seems to work without any issues. This dock is not a Thunderbolt dock so it will not charge your laptop and will install a new USB video card for display output. The computer will need to be connected to power for charging with a separate cable. Little rocky installation but once it got going it works really great. It has lots of ports and performs quickly. I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.

So many ports!

By: andrewxs11 - 05/24/2018
This is a really versatile docking station. Depending on what monitors you have, you invariably have to look at adapters for something or other, or you are tied to only using one device. This dock lets you connect different host machines (USB 3.0 or USB-C) to a wide variety of monitors. I was impressed with the 4 USB 3.0 ports in the front, I thought all these ports would make it look crowded, but it’s very slick and everything works. I can go between my 2 laptops and connect to everything I need. This would be a great option for Hoteling stations, where people don’t all have the same hardware. Setup is very easy and every Win10 machine I’ve connected finds all the drivers quickly and efficiently. I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review

Lots of ports and just works!

By: Nick_107 - 06/11/2018
Small, lots of ports, sturdy, and worked without me doing anything on both my Dell (Windows), and Macbook. If it worked with Linux, had an extra USB-C port, and delivered power over USB-C, it would be the perfect dock for me! C'mon guys... I need to add an extra USB-C adapter to get power to the Macbook using this dock? Add a second, power-delivering port, and call it a day! Other than power, my only complaint is that the USB-C port that it does have, for connecting a laptop, is on the back. Since I have to switch cables to connect my laptops, and I "mount" my docks towards the back of the desk with other devices in a stack, having to reach behind and swap cables is annoying. If I had this dock on a shared desk, I'd hear about it from the users! Anyway, on to the positive.... Small, sturdy, LOTS of ports (compared to my other USB3 and TB3 docks!), and fast throughput. Connected three different laptops in total, and no driver pause or installs for me (maybe I already have the DisplayLink drivers from before?). Video is flawless at full resolution, I've played games, done some Blender and Photoshop stuff.... So now this dock is part of the mounted stack on my desk! If it delivered power, I'd probably take my TB3 dock out since this works just fine with my Macbook now, and HAS MORE PORTS!!! :)

How come you didn't added charging and SD card into this device - otherwise it's the perfect adapter for the Mac Book Pro! Works great with my Lacie disks Works great with two 4K LG screens (3840x2160 60Hz) Mouse and Keyboard (I prefer the wired mouse)

Works well WHEN it works

By: Brandon - 10/01/2019
I've had this docking station for a while now and I can't seem to get through a full day (even a few hours) of work without it disconnecting the video. About a third of the time when I plug it into my computer (2018 MBP) it doesn't recognize the USB keyboard. I have to either disconnect and reconnect, or turn the docking station off and on again. I've tried updating firmware and DisplayLink drivers on my Mac but nothing has helped. My (much less expensive) docking station in my home office does not have these issues, so I know it's not my computer. It's frustrating that I can't get this to just work the way it's advertised...

Why can't it just work

By: Gman035 - 12/20/2019
IT Dept has quite a few of these and now I know why. DisplayLink manager spits out 150 msg/sec to system log and uses a lot of cpu. Tried reinstall of driver after an hour with startech support. Also, displays will not come back after undocking about 80% of the time. I don't have time to waste on getting h/w like this to work. MacBook Pro 2017 w/ 16GB i7 Catalina 10.15.1

We're sorry to hear about the difficulties you've experienced with our DK30A2DH. This dock utilizes the CPU in your computer to create the image and therefore it does raise the amount of CPU used. But it shouldn't be enough to cause other programs to slow down unless you're using very graphically intensive software. The dock should also not be having issues with the displays not coming back on after undocking and this could indicate that there may be a problem with the dock you received. The DK30A2DH has a 3-year warranty with lifetime technical support and we'd be happy to replace the dock for you. If you require assistance please do not hesitate to contact us at www.startech.com/support where our Technical Advisors are available 24 hours a day, 5 days a week to provide support.

Good, but fragile poweradapter

By: Timmie - 03/17/2020
I bought this docking station last week and connected it today. Its working perfectly with 2 additional screens and the available usb ports are enough. The only disappointing part is the power adapter supplied with it. As it is a universal version you have to apply the EU, JP, UK or ANZ part yourself. The EU adapter doesn´t connect perfectly and because of this the power is failing several times in a power-strip. It would be beter to deliver a regular EU power adapter as I now have to fix it with additional tape/tie-rip to keep it on its place. Because of this it would not recommend the docking to others.

Hello Timmie, Thank you for sharing your review of our DK30A2DH. The power adapter that comes with this dock is a universal power adapter but the heads for each county should install properly and without issue. The DK30A2DH comes with a 3-year warranty and lifetime technical support and this also covers the power adapter. Please contact us at www.startech.com/eu/support so that we can help fix this for you. Our Technical Advisors are available 24 hours a day, 5 days a week to provide assistance.

Matt, Customer Support on 07/04/2020 16.57.31
We apologize for the difficulties you're having with our DK30A2DH. This dock is compatible with both USB-C and standard USB 3.0 so it uses a Displaylink chipset to convert a USB data signal to video. Due to this, the displays are seen by the host PC as virtual displays and don't have the same functionality as a dock that uses USB-C DP-Alt mode with MST. If you are looking for a dock that will be seen properly by your nVidia control panel or support video/photo editing or gaming, we recommend a dock like our MST30C2HDPPD.

Connection lost constantely.

By: bas83 - 04/08/2020
I have 5 of those dockingstation, hooked up to HP zbook 16G, but the docking stations will lose connection all the time, No network no monitors. When disconnecting the dockingstation and connecting again it works again. Updated the USB c drivers, Video drivers, laptop bios. But nothing solves the issus. Maybe StarTech need to update the firmware of the dockingstation.

We apologize for any confusion when purchasing our DK30A2DH. This dock is a standard USB 3.0 docking station and comes with both a USB-C and standard USB-A cable but due to being USB 3.0 and not full USB-C it does not provide power back to the host laptop. If you need a computer that supports power delivery, we recommend a dock such as our DK30C2DPPD that provides up to 60W power to the host laptop.

Good, but NO charging?...

By: mike12345678 - 05/23/2020
IT bought me one of these for my WFH set up.. Works great, but how do you not have charging on it. I'll get the adapter, but seems like a massive oversight. I'll be stuck on my laptop only for part of the day while it charges in the meantime.. Overall startech products are quality. This is just annoying, and seemingly avoidable.

Worked for two days

By: TimK19 - 07/08/2020
I got this product from my employer and set it up and it worked for three days, and then stopped working. I believe its a power issue because the LED light will not work when plugged in. Not sure whether its the displaylink or the charger, but its disappointing that either would fail so quickly

Outstanding product, poor driver.

By: Marach - 08/18/2020
First off, this is an excellent product that supported all the non-display accessories I use. The shortcoming is with the DisplayLink driver. Turns out that the driver for Mac does not support clamshell mode. I could work around that. The show stopper for me is that HDCP will not play thru the dock with the current driver, no iTunes purchase video will play thru to the monitors.

Drivers are developed by DisplayLink, the maker of the chip used in this docking station. Certain limitations are as result of OS constraints, and some may be resolved through a future OS or driver update. We apologize certain features aren't currently available in our dock, but please check our latest driver downloads in case this changes with a future driver release by DisplayLink.
