Special Notes / Requirements System and Cable Requirements A host laptop with an available USB-C port (to ensure full adapter functionality, the host USB-C port must support USB Power Delivery 2.0 and DP alt mode)
Note Not all USB-C ports support the full functionality of the USB Type-C standard. Ensure that your host USB-C port supports USB Power Delivery 2.0 and DP alt mode.
System and Cable Requirements Optional: USB-C power adapter (for example, your laptop’s USB-C based power adapter)
Note The adapter can connect to a host laptop’s USB-C port that doesn’t support USB Power Delivery 2.0. However, in this configuration if a power adapter is connected to the multifunction adapter, it will not pass power through to your host laptop.
A 4K-capable display is required to achieve 3840 x 2160p resolution (4K is also known as 4K x 2K)
USB 3.0 is also known as USB 3.1 Gen 1; this connectivity standard offers speeds up to 5Gbps.
Your laptop might have specific charging requirements. For example, if your laptop requires exactly 60W of power and an adapter consumes some of the 60W, your laptop might not recognize that it is getting enough power. For more information about Power Delivery, refer to the manufacturer of your hardware.

Troubleshooting

Sometimes an on-board network interface card (NIC) conflicts with a new NIC.  In these cases it is best to disable the on-board NIC.

The best way to disable your on-board NIC is to go into your BIOS and disable it there if possible.  To do this, consult your motherboard manual.

You can also disable any NIC in Windows.  Here is how you do this:

First click Start, or, in Windows 10 and 8, hold down the Windows key and press X.  Then click Control Panel.

Windows 10

  1. Click Network and Internet.
  2. Click Network and Sharing Center.
  3. On the left, click Change adapter settings.
  4. Right-click the NIC that you would like to disable and select Disable.

Windows 8

  1. Click Network and Sharing Center.
  2. On the left, click Change adapter settings.
  3. Right-click the NIC that you would like to disable and select Disable.

Windows 7

  1. Click Network and Internet.
  2. Click Network and Sharing Center.
  3. On the left, click Change adapter settings.
  4. Right-click the NIC that you would like to disable and select Disable.

Windows Vista

  1. Click Network and Sharing Center.
  2. On the left, click Manage network connections.
  3. Right-click the NIC that you would like to disable and select Disable.

Windows XP

  1. Click Network Connections.
  2. Right-click the NIC that you would like to disable and select Disable.

If the display connected through your USB display adapter does not wake up after your computer has been in extended hibernation, it is likely that Windows has automatically turned off the USB Root hub to save power.

The steps below outline how to configure the USB root hub to stay on during hibernation, to prevent this from happening.

Windows 8 / 10

  1. On your keyboard, press the Windows key + X and select Control Panel.
  2. Click Hardware and Sound, then click Power Options.
  3. Click Change plan settings for the plan you want to change.
  4. Click Change advanced power settings.
  5. Click the plus sign (+) next to “USB settings” and “USB selective suspend setting” to expand the options and change the setting to Disabled.
  6. Click OK to apply the setting.

Note: You may need to disconnect and re-connect your USB display adapter after applying these settings to re-establish the connection.

Windows 7 / Vista

  1. Click the Start button and select Control Panel.

Windows XP

  1. On your desktop, right-click the My Computer icon and select Properties.
  2. Click the Device Manager tab.
  3. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers by clicking the arrow to the left of it.
  4. Right-click the first USB Root Hub device and select Properties.
  5. Click the Power Management tab.
  6. Clear the box next to Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
  7. Click OK to apply the setting.
  8. Repeat steps 4-7 for any remaining devices in the Universal Serial Bus Controllers section with “Root Hub” in the name.

Note: You may need to disconnect and re-connect your USB display adapter after applying these settings to re-establish the connection.

If you disconnect a USB-C power adapter from the multiport adapter while transferring files to or from an attached storage device, it will stop the transfer and may cause file corruption. It is also possible that there will be a loss of function if the power adapter is removed from the adapter while it is in operation. It is important to always follow the disconnection steps listed below.

To discontinue charging the multiport adapter and/or to disconnect an SD card from the device, complete the following:

  1. Complete all data transfers over USB to and from the SD card.
  2. Disconnect the adapter from the host laptop.
  3. Disconnect your laptop’s power adapter from the adapter.
  4. Disconnect the HDMI connector, eject SD card and disconnect any USB peripherals as required.

When you troubleshoot issues with a laptop docking station, there are some quick tests that you can complete to rule out potential problems. You can test to make sure that the following components are working correctly and are not the source of the issue:

  • Video cables

  • Video source

Excellent USB-C Multiport Adapter

By: wizzard - 09/18/2017
This is a small, space grey coloured USB-C multipart adapter. You will need a USB-C powered (charged) laptop (MacBook(S), Lenovo, Asus Chromebook, etc) that is powered by USB-C, in ordered to take advantage of the USB-C powered mode. However this does not preclude you from using with any other USB-C. It is always best to check with your original manufacturer of your laptop or hardware regarding the power delivery requirements needed - some adapter can consume some power and so the charging requirement might not be met for your device. You can use this adapter without USB Power Delivery and with USB Power Delivery using your OEM USB-C power adapter (or a USB-C power adapter that is the same or higher). Device connection is UBS-C and contains a gigabit ethernet port (on opposite end to connection cable), a USB-C pass thru port for charging (see above, 2 USB 3.0 ports and a full size 4K HDMI port. This USB-C device can be used on a Thunderbolt 3 port but on at USB speeds of 5Gbps. The product works well and I have tried several different USB-C power adapter (all rated at the same or higher than my USB-C laptop requires) plugging into the USB-C with no issues. Note: the USB-C port on the adapter is meant for DC power or your laptops power adapter. It is a nice small adapter block that will satisfy all your connection issues with a USB-C powered laptop and does cut down on most of the clutter associated with devices that have minimal USB-C ports to plug things into. You also don't loose connectivity to your other technology devices plus it is nice having the HDMI and gig ethernet as well. I could not test the 4K HDMI as I don't have a 4K TV but still the quality was excellent. Some of the multifunction devices out there I had found that they can cut out if all ports are being used (inferior quality) but I have not had this so far with this device. Purchasing this would be a welcome addition to your USB-C laptop and certainly will not cost you and arm and leg. The fit and finish is great as well and it is a very easy carry in your laptop or gig bag. There are several crowd funding platforms where similar devices are being sold and sold as part of a perk - but generally the cost is higher along with shipping and customs. StarTech has this available now so don't wait - make your USB-C powered device happy. “I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.”

Nice build quality, Easy to use!

By: macphot1970 - 10/01/2017
This is a good usb-c adapter for those wanting HDMI video output, expansion of usb, ethernet or SD card. I found this was very simple to use plug in and visit the website to get the drivers, install the appropriate driver and it works. I found the video to work well with a 1080p monitor. This is a good size and the build quality appears to be extremely good. Overall this is a great little unit and provides most of the connections that people would need. USB-C Multiport Adapter Power Deliver Made Easy

By: HuberJ12345 - 10/01/2017
I have been in the AV/IT Integration space for over 30 years. I found this unit easy to setup and use on my Microsoft and Apple devices. This adapter features USB Power Delivery, which is an excellent feature. I utilized this unit with my laptop display, which made it easy to create a dual-monitor workstation. The adapter can connect to a laptop’s USB-C port that doesn’t support USB Power Delivery 2.0. But when you are utilizing the unit in this manner, the unit will not pass power through to your host device. The 4K or 3840 x 2160p resolution was crisp and without tearing or pixalization. USB Type-C is new universal connectivity standard which combines all of your essential functions into one dynamic port. This adapter worked wonderfully with my USB-C devices. Slick!

By: Andrew11 - 10/13/2017
This is my new favourite USB-C adapter. I wouldn’t have thought combining an SD card reader, Gigabit Network, HDMI Video and USB hub into one slim adapter was possible, but here it is. Add to it the adapter itself is beautiful; metal casing, smooth and durable. I’ve caught co-workers checking it out on several occasions and commenting on how well it is constructed. It’s small and portable, I don’t go anywhere without it! I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review

Great Quality Doc, Many Ports & Stylish

By: NickD_CA29 - 10/15/2017
I have been using this USB-C dock with several Windows computers and Android phones without any issues. Like most USB-C devices it starts working almost immediately when connected. The dock does not require Thunderbolt for all this to work. The dock comes in a box roughly the size of two DVD cases. It comes with an instruction book, but it really isn't necessary as the dock has been plug and play on everything I have used it on. The dock itself fits in my hand and is easy to transport with me. It has Network, SD, USB-3 and HDMI ports on it. It also has a USB-C port so you can charge the attached device. The dock is made with nice metal feeling case, very premium looking. The dock starts working right away when connected. I can use it to connect to a wired network cable, mice, keyboards and USB drives. The SD port works with the larger SDHC cards and is very fast to transfer files. The HDMI port works very quickly as well with no lag and detecting screens very fast. This dock is a very nice size and super quality materials. This will likely be the a standard dock I travel with from now on. I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.

Using as a daily portable docking station

By: morty - 10/16/2017
This product is by my side daily as I'm using it as a lightweight portable docking station. It has all the ports you'd need for on the go. It also has a very quality feel as the casing is made out of metal rather than plastic. All the ports work great. The HDMI port drives my 4k monitor, the gig-e port allows me to stay on the wired rather than wireless network when I move around or am in meetings. Best of all is the dual USB ports that let me copy files between usb keys. Will definitely be picking up more of these in the future for the team. Doesn't do what it says

Matt, Customer Support on 23/04/2020 15.34.47
We pride ourselves on our high-quality standards and are sorry to hear about the difficulties you're having with our DKT30CSDHPD. This dock should provide up to 60W charge to your MacBook Pro which should be enough to charge it when not in use, but if you're using it heavily it may not be enough for full speed charging as the included power adapter for the MacBook Pro is 85W. The USB 3.0 ports on the dock provide the standard 5V at 900mA power which, while enough to slow-charge most smartphones, may not be enough to keep an iPad charged if it's still in use since they often require 5V at 2.4A to charge at full speed. Regardless of the above, the dock should not be heating up intensely and we'd like to speak with you to ensure that the dock you received is not faulty. The DKT30CSDHPD comes with a 3-year warranty and free lifetime technical support and you can contact us for assistance at www.startech.com/support. Our Technical Advisors are available 24 hours a day, 5 days a week.

Works, but gets hot.

By: RickV - 06/29/2020
I purchased this unit to "upgrade" my new Macbook Pro so I can once again use my peripherals. The unit works, BUT at a cost on power. it gets pretty warm just connected with no attachments. It gets even much hotter when a device (i.e. external drive) is connected. This leads me to estimate, considering the heat produced, that my battery life will be significantly shortened. In one instance, I had my Mac warn me about excessive power draw while an external drive and a flash drive were connected at the same time. Since then I only use this adapter when absolutely necessary. I now use a USB31CAADG to connect external drives, since that unit does not get hot.
