Connected Device Transparency with the StarTech.com MAC Address Changer Utility

The DK30CHDDPPD, includes a free Windows® application that enables you to better manage your enterprise network security. When you connect to your network through the ethernet port of the dock, the computer’s MAC address is typically not broadcast to the network, as your network only sees the MAC address of the docking station. However, the StarTech.com MAC Address Changer or Cloning software enables the USB-C dock to use MAC address spoofing of the connected Windows laptop rather than the MAC address of the dock itself. This ensures your network administrators have full visibility of each device on the network and can monitor and limit activity accordingly. To request access to our MAC Address Changer utility, please contact our Technical Support Department by phone, live chat, or e-mail.

The DK30CHDDPPD is backed by a StarTech.com 3-year warranty and free lifetime technical support.

Installation

Starting in High Sierra 10.13, macOS enforces stricter security policies than previous revisions. As a result of these changes, software packages, like those used in this installation, will need to be allowed within the macOS Security and Privacy settings, immediately after the software has been installed, in order for the device to operate.

To allow the software, follow these steps after you've completed installation on your Mac:

  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Open Security & Privacy.
  3. Click the Allow button near the bottom of the General tab.

Note: The option to allow the software will be available within the Security & Privacy settings for 30 minutes. If the software is not allowed within that time frame, the software must be reinstalled in order for macOS to grant the opportunity to allow it again.

Troubleshooting

Computers running macOS Catalina (10.15) may experience compatibility issues with products that use DisplayLink technology, such as USB Docking Stations and Video Adapters. Connecting to a DisplayLink-powered Product may cause the Display(s) to output a blank screen. If you experience this problem, follow these steps:

  1. Update computer to the latest version of macOS 10.15
  2. Permit Screen Recording by following these steps: macOS Catalina 10.15: Screen Recording permission (external link)
  3. Enable the DisplayLink Kernel Extension by following these steps: macOS 10.13, 10.14 and 10.15: Video functionality not enabled (external link)
  4. If the problem persists, try installing the DisplayLink Manager Application (external link). Be sure to run the application after installation and select “Launch automatically after logging-in” for it to start automatically every time you log-in.

When you troubleshoot issues with a laptop docking station, there are some quick tests that you can complete to rule out potential problems. You can test to make sure that the following components are working correctly and are not the source of the issue:

  • Video cables

  • Video source

  • Video destination

  • Laptop docking station

  • USB peripherals

  • Ethernet connection

To test your setup components, try the following:

  • Use the video cables, video source, video destination, laptop docking station, USB peripherals, and Ethernet connection in another setup to see if the problem is with the components or the setup.

  • Use a different video cable, video source, video destination, laptop docking station, USB peripherals, and Ethernet connection setup to see if the problem persists. Ideally, you should test a component that you know works in another setup.

When you test your cables, it is recommended that you do the following:

  • Test each cable individually.

  • Use short cables when you are testing.

When you test the video cables, video source, video destination, and laptop docking station it is recommended that you do the following:

  1. Press the Windows key + R, type devmgmt.msc, and press Enter to open Device Manager.

  2. If you do not see the USB video adapter in Device Manager, refer to the following FAQ: https://www.startech.com/support/faqs/technical-support?topic=expansion-cards#usb-cannot-detect-windows.

  3. If the device is listed with an error, reinstall the drivers following the instructions on the website.

  4. Check to see if your video card drivers are current. You can check what video card you have in Device Manager under Display adapters. It is recommended that you go directly to the video card manufacturer's website to check for the latest drivers.

  5. Check to see if the monitor is being detected by Windows.

For more information about testing the USB peripherals and the laptop docking station, visit www.startech.com/faq/usb_hubs_general_troubleshooting.

When you test Ethernet and the laptop docking station, refer to the following FAQ: http://www.startech.com/faq/network_adapters_general_troubleshooting.

When you test sound and the laptop docking station, refer to the following FAQ: http://www.startech.com/faq/sound_cards_general_troubleshooting.

Good quality docking station

By: macphoto1970_02 - 07/08/2018
I love this docking station for all its options, You get multiple usb ports, HDMI, Displayport, audio, and gigabit ethernet and for something different a SD card slot. As I am always taking pictures with a digital camera I found this to be a great addition to the dock. I had no issues using the dock and the only real complaint i have is with the weight of the dock. I would like these to be a bit heavier as i find the dock with move where the cables push it. With a little more weight to the dock it would sit in one place on a desk instead of getting pushed around by cables. for function this dock is great! I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.

Excellent Docking Station

By: henry099 - 07/16/2018
This is very similar in capabilities to DK30ADD except it is USB-C connected as opposed to USB 3.0. This product again is part of my my essential computer tools and is used daily. It will work on any computer with a USB-C port. It is well made. It comes with power adapters (EU and NA) , a USB-C cable to connect to your computer, and manual. It has Display Link drivers available for Windows and Mac (work in High Sierra). All work well. I have not tested any 4K display devices so can not comment on this or work ability of this but it does provide crisp clean video on lower resolution monitors. This docking station provides all the essentials of USB ports (3 on back, 1 on front), an SD Card slot on the one end, headphone jack and power switch on the front as well as HDMI, Display Link , gig Ethernet on the back along with the 3 USB ports. There is a large power brick for this device so it might not be a light travelling companion. Well made and truly functional docking station and I, for one, will not part with it. This has been tested primarily on a MAC (under High Sierra (not 10.3.4 but higher)) but has also been tested on Windows 10. Note: I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.

Perfect dock for the photo editor on the go!

By: ShawnO_5 - 07/17/2018
This dock has an impressive amount of ports (4 USB, SD Card, Headphone, HDMI, Display link, Gigabit Ethernet) for such a light weight device. While similar to some other StarTech USB-C docks the addition of an SD card slot is a life saver for those doing photo editing work, etc. The only downside experienced was that the power brick is large comparative to the dock itself. The weight of the power brick tends to tip or move the dock depending on your desk height and cable management. I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.

Excellent USB-C Dual 4K Docking Station

By: hubj8547 - 07/30/2018
I have been in the AV/IT Integration space for over 30 years. I found this unit easy to setup and use on my Microsoft and Apple devices. I especially like that USB-C docking station features USB Power Delivery 2.0 to power and charge your laptop as you work. The SD Slot allows for direct access to the SD memory cards, which is a must for anyone who edits photos or videos. The unit provides more than enough connection possibilities with four USB 3.0 (Type-A) ports, a USB 3.0 fast-charge and sync port, a Gigabit Ethernet port, and a combined 3.5 mm audio and microphone port. The unit installs quickly and is compatible with a variety of operating systems, which I tested. What is Included: 1 - Docking Station 1 - USB-C Cable 1 - Universal Power Adapter 1 - Instruction Manual Note: “I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.”

Perfect with my PC but not my Mac, yet.

By: Andrew11 - 07/30/2018
This is another great docking station from Startech.com. Solid build and great ports, including an SD card reader that I really love. This dock worked perfectly for my Windows-based notebook, after installing all the necessary drivers. The issues came up while testing with a Macbook Pro, but I don’t entirely hold the Dock to blame. The issue came from the MacOS version; I upgraded to the very latest version and the chipset isn’t fully supported. Look at the website (support tab) and heed readme files and driver information bulletins, if you are the sort to not jump at the latest updates, you might not have any issues. I fully believe this is a temporary situation and will be solved in short order. This is a solid docking station with a 60 watt power supply, something I think is essential in a one-cable docking solution. Video output is excellent on both HDMI and DP. Solid, small, and pain free

By: Nick_135 - 09/14/2018
I received this item to review (my old review is missing!). Since then, however, I have gone on to buy several more, recommend them to friends, etc. My one critique is that it really needs more USB3 on the front. I mean, the back is nice, but when you have the dock tucked out of the way in the back corner of the desk.... I swap USB devices often, so it's not a fluid movement. It charges my Macbook just fine via the USB-C, has a charging USB port, and a single audio (for headset with mic) too. The SD card slot is a nice touch, and really fast with newer SD cards. I can download from my camera's memory card MUCH faster than my USB SD card reader from last year. Writes quick too. Needs better "non-slide" feet! The power adapter cable could be a touch longer (since this is a desk-mount type device), but that's just my view. All in all, one of the best StarTech USB-C docks I've used so far!

Does not work with DSP connection on Mac

By: pimp_vader - 03/25/2019
I had bought this with the hope of using 2 monitors with my MacBook Pro, I am running 10.14.3 and I am running the newest drivers as provided by StarTech but the only monitor that is working is the HDMI connected monitor.

Thanks for sharing this feedback. We suspect the issue you ran into is being caused by stricter security settings in macOS 10.13 and later. To allow the software to function, follow these steps after you've completed installation on your Mac: Open System Preferences. Open Security & Privacy. Click the Allow button near the bottom of the General tab. If you need assistance with this process, please call us or connect with us through our live chat service.

Good - but lots of problems

By: Sharvul - 03/05/2020
I am using it with my 13" 2019 MacBook Pro (OS 10.15.3). My setup includes 2 x 4k LG monitors, an apple USB keyboard, a USB speaker (Jabra 510). Problems: The dock has only 1 HDMI port which means I had to connect 1 of the 4k monitors with DisplayPort. Few times a day, when laptop gets out of sleep, the screen connected via HDMI comes up but the one with DisplayPort doesn't. Not sure why. Only unplugging the USB-C dock cable from the laptop and powering off/on the dock solves the problem. In most case, only a restart helps. No issue with the HDMI-connected screen. Same issue with the Apple USB keyboard. Every once in a while, the keyboard doesn't work (it is ALWAYS plugged in, and dock is always on). Plugging out and in again doesn't work. Only a restart works. Wish there was a solution for this (New firmware?) as the constant need for restarting and unplugging is very irritating and defeats the purpose of having a dock. Help!

DisplayPort does not work with Mac

By: SteveZen - 06/26/2020
I have been trying everything to get my 2nd monitor to work with MacBook Pro. I changed the screen recording to allow DisplayPort driver to allow. Still, the monitor shows "No Signal". Very frustrating, as this is supposed to be plug and play.
