Connected Device Transparency with the StarTech.com MAC Address Changer Utility

The DK30C2DAGPD, includes a free Windows® application that enables you to better manage your enterprise network security. When you connect to your network through the ethernet port of the DK30C2DAGPD, the computer’s MAC address is typically not broadcast to the network, as your network only sees the MAC address of the docking station. However, the StarTech.com MAC Address Changer or Cloning software enables the USB-C dock to use MAC address spoofing of the connected Windows laptop rather than the MAC address of the dock itself. This ensures your network administrators have full visibility of each device on the network and can monitor and limit activity accordingly. To request access to our MAC Address Changer utility, please contact our Technical Support Department by phone, live chat, or e-mail.

Installation

Prior to installing this device, ensure that your operating system is up to date (for example, you have installed the most recent service pack).

To install the driver:

  1. Download the latest drivers from the StarTech.com website (http://www.startech.com/Support). You can find the part number and product ID on the product’s packaging.

Note: Windows will typically save the files to the Downloads folder that is associated with your user account (for example, C:\Users\your_name\Downloads).

  1. Once the download is complete, right-click the zip folder that you downloaded, select Extract All, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  2. Select the appropriate folder for your operating system.
  3. Right-click Setup.exe.
  4. Click Run as Administrator.

Note: If the Run as Administrator option is not available, you might be attempting to run the installer from within the zipped file. Extract the files using the instructions in Step 2.

  1. Follow the on-screen prompts to install the device drivers and restart the computer when prompted.
  2. Your computer will automatically complete the driver installation and your device should be ready to use.

Troubleshooting

Sometimes an on-board network interface card (NIC) conflicts with a new NIC.  In these cases it is best to disable the on-board NIC.

The best way to disable your on-board NIC is to go into your BIOS and disable it there if possible.  To do this, consult your motherboard manual.

You can also disable any NIC in Windows.  Here is how you do this:

First click Start, or, in Windows 10 and 8, hold down the Windows key and press X.  Then click Control Panel.

Windows 10

  1. Click Network and Internet.
  2. Click Network and Sharing Center.
  3. On the left, click Change adapter settings.
  4. Right-click the NIC that you would like to disable and select Disable.

Windows 8

  1. Click Network and Sharing Center.
  2. On the left, click Change adapter settings.
  3. Right-click the NIC that you would like to disable and select Disable.

Windows 7

  1. Click Network and Internet.
  2. Click Network and Sharing Center.
  3. On the left, click Change adapter settings.
  4. Right-click the NIC that you would like to disable and select Disable.

Windows Vista

  1. Click Network and Sharing Center.
  2. On the left, click Manage network connections.
  3. Right-click the NIC that you would like to disable and select Disable.

Windows XP

  1. Click Network Connections.
  2. Right-click the NIC that you would like to disable and select Disable.

If you are experiencing flickering issues with the MST hub, your monitors may be at a 59 Hz refresh rate. If they are at 59 Hz, you need to adjust the refresh rate to 60 Hz. In order to change your monitor's refresh rate, complete the following:

  1. Right-click anywhere on your desktop.
  2. Click Screen resolution or Display settings.
  3. At the top of the screen, select the monitor that you want to change the refresh rate for.
  4. Click Advanced settings or Display adapter properties.
  5. On the Monitor tab, click the Screen refresh rate drop-down list.

Note: This step may vary depending on your operating system and graphics card.

By default, most systems will duplicate to multiple displays when a MST hub is attached. If you are getting mirrored displays and cannot detect more than one display in Screen Resolution or Display Settings, your graphics card may not be compatible with MST. For more information about how to determine if your graphics card is MST compatible, refer to the following FAQ: https://www.startech.com/faq/mst-hubs-gpu-compatibility

If you are using a version of Mac OSX, refer to the following FAQ for more information: https://www.startech.com/faq/mst-hubs-mac-osx-support.

When you troubleshoot issues with a laptop docking station, there are some quick tests that you can complete to rule out potential problems. You can test to make sure that the following components are working correctly and are not the source of the issue:

  • Video cables

  • Video source

  • Video destination

  • Laptop docking station

  • USB peripherals

  • Ethernet connection

To test your setup components, try the following:

  • Use the video cables, video source, video destination, laptop docking station, USB peripherals, and Ethernet connection in another setup to see if the problem is with the components or the setup.

  • Use a different video cable, video source, video destination, laptop docking station, USB peripherals, and Ethernet connection setup to see if the problem persists. Ideally, you should test a component that you know works in another setup.

When you test your cables, it is recommended that you do the following:

  • Test each cable individually.

  • Use short cables when you are testing.

When you test the video cables, video source, video destination, and laptop docking station it is recommended that you do the following:

  1. Press the Windows key + R, type devmgmt.msc, and press Enter to open Device Manager.

  2. If you do not see the USB video adapter in Device Manager, refer to the following FAQ: https://www.startech.com/support/faqs/technical-support?topic=expansion-cards#usb-cannot-detect-windows.

  3. If the device is listed with an error, reinstall the drivers following the instructions on the website.

  4. Check to see if your video card drivers are current. You can check what video card you have in Device Manager under Display adapters. It is recommended that you go directly to the video card manufacturer's website to check for the latest drivers.

  5. Check to see if the monitor is being detected by Windows.

For more information about testing the USB peripherals and the laptop docking station, visit www.startech.com/faq/usb_hubs_general_troubleshooting.

When you test Ethernet and the laptop docking station, refer to the following FAQ: http://www.startech.com/faq/network_adapters_general_troubleshooting.

When you test sound and the laptop docking station, refer to the following FAQ: http://www.startech.com/faq/sound_cards_general_troubleshooting.

Before You Buy

Recent versions of DisplayPort include the ability to split to multiple displays from one DisplayPort connection using Multi-Stream Transport (MST).

Although you will be able to connect the MST hub to the Mini DisplayPort (mDP) connection on your Mac, Mac OSX does not support MST for NVIDIA and Intel Graphics Processor Units (GPUs). This results in a mirrored image across the outputs of a MST hub and you will not be able to have multiple independent displays on your Mac.

The limitation of NVIDIA and Intel GPUs lies within Mac OSX. If a different operating system is used, such as Microsoft Windows via Bootcamp, you may be able to use the MST functionality of your Mac.

Yes, you can use this laptop docking station to charge a laptop computer.

For more information on what the requirements are and about how much power this laptop docking station provides, refer to the product manual.

This USB-C device requires that all of the following components support alternate modes:

  • The USB-C host connection (for example, a computer and its port)
  • The USB-C cable
  • The USB-C device (for example, a hard drive docking station)

If your host device includes a Thunderbolt™ 3 connection, this USB-C device will work with your host device.

For more information about the modes that your setup components support, refer to the information provided by the manufacturers.

Dual Display Great... Power No...

By: KevinD - 05/23/2019
i bought 4 of these for my work area as we upgraded laptops. Also have 4, 60w power supplies that work fine with the laptops. However, there is NO POWER DELIVERY when the USB C power supply is plugged into the Power delivery port. Not very useful at this point as the PC"s just bought have just 1 USB C port.

Sam, Customer Support on 5/31/2019 4:23:17 PM
Thank you for your review of DK30C2DAGPD. We're sorry that it's been having problems with power delivery. The dock itself is powered by your laptop's power adapter. It reserves a small amount of the power for itself, and the remainder goes to your laptop. If your laptop deems the power that gets through to be too little, it will not charge. Some laptop manufacturers have released updates to address this problem and allow laptops to accept lower amounts of power, so we recommend making sure your laptop is fully updated with the manufacturer's website. If you need further assistance, please reach out to our Technical Advisors at www.startech.com/support. We're available 24 hours a day, 5 days a week, to provide support.

Work as intended

By: ulejas - 02/18/2020
This replaced the terrible docks that Dell is currently delivery to their customers. I won't start down that path. This dock works well, displays dual screens and can had the UltraSharp Dell monitors. Ethernet and USB works good. As the person that 1 stared this actually. I'm not sure how he/she actually thought it would charge the laptop too. That should have been obvious.

[email protected] and charging

By: darkknight75 - 05/19/2020
It took a few weeks searching for the right docking station for me. I need [email protected] and power delivery. This enables me to interchange two laptops at the same monitor using just one single USB-C cable. This docking station is the first one that fulfilled my requirement. It is essential to read the docs. The device takes 15watts for itself. This means if you are using e.g. a 65w power supply, there will only be 50w available to the notebook. I solved the issue by buying an additional 112w USB-C power supply, offering enough reserves for both the power unit and the dock. Both notebooks charge fast. Highly recommended product if your notebook supports USB-C alt mode.
