Installation

Starting in High Sierra 10.13, macOS enforces stricter security policies than previous revisions. As a result of these changes, software packages, like those used in this installation, will need to be allowed within the macOS Security and Privacy settings, immediately after the software has been installed, in order for the device to operate.

To allow the software, follow these steps after you've completed installation on your Mac:

  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Open Security & Privacy.
  3. Click the Allow button near the bottom of the General tab.

Note: The option to allow the software will be available within the Security & Privacy settings for 30 minutes. If the software is not allowed within that time frame, the software must be reinstalled in order for macOS to grant the opportunity to allow it again.

Troubleshooting

If the display connected through your USB display adapter does not wake up after your computer has been in extended hibernation, it is likely that Windows has automatically turned off the USB Root hub to save power.

The steps below outline how to configure the USB root hub to stay on during hibernation, to prevent this from happening.

Windows 8 / 10

  1. On your keyboard, press the Windows key + X and select Control Panel.
  2. Click Hardware and Sound, then click Power Options.
  3. Click Change plan settings for the plan you want to change.
  4. Click Change advanced power settings.
  5. Click the plus sign (+) next to “USB settings” and “USB selective suspend setting” to expand the options and change the setting to Disabled.
  6. Click OK to apply the setting.

Note: You may need to disconnect and re-connect your USB display adapter after applying these settings to re-establish the connection.

Windows 7 / Vista

  1. Click the Start button and select Control Panel.

Windows XP

  1. On your desktop, right-click the My Computer icon and select Properties.
  2. Click the Device Manager tab.
  3. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers by clicking the arrow to the left of it.
  4. Right-click the first USB Root Hub device and select Properties.
  5. Click the Power Management tab.
  6. Clear the box next to Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
  7. Click OK to apply the setting.
  8. Repeat steps 4-7 for any remaining devices in the Universal Serial Bus Controllers section with “Root Hub” in the name.

Note: You may need to disconnect and re-connect your USB display adapter after applying these settings to re-establish the connection.

Sometimes an on-board network interface card (NIC) conflicts with a new NIC.  In these cases it is best to disable the on-board NIC.

The best way to disable your on-board NIC is to go into your BIOS and disable it there if possible.  To do this, consult your motherboard manual.

You can also disable any NIC in Windows.  Here is how you do this:

First click Start, or, in Windows 10 and 8, hold down the Windows key and press X.  Then click Control Panel.

Windows 10

  1. Click Network and Internet.
  2. Click Network and Sharing Center.
  3. On the left, click Change adapter settings.
  4. Right-click the NIC that you would like to disable and select Disable.

Windows 8

  1. Click Network and Sharing Center.
  2. On the left, click Change adapter settings.
  3. Right-click the NIC that you would like to disable and select Disable.

Windows 7

  1. Click Network and Internet.
  2. Click Network and Sharing Center.
  3. On the left, click Change adapter settings.
  4. Right-click the NIC that you would like to disable and select Disable.

Windows Vista

  1. Click Network and Sharing Center.
  2. On the left, click Manage network connections.
  3. Right-click the NIC that you would like to disable and select Disable.

Windows XP

  1. Click Network Connections.
  2. Right-click the NIC that you would like to disable and select Disable.

My favourite USB-C adapter

By: Andrew11 - 08/17/2017
While I really like USB-C and all the things it can do, I still only have one of them on my ultrabook, which makes for constant switching to connect everything I need to. Not anymore. This adapter combines all the things I really need in a small adapter with a perfectly short cable. It’s both a small docking station and perfect travel adapter, giving me another USB3 port, Gigabit Ethernet and 2 video options. It’s all I need and works perfectly every time. USB-C Multi-port Adapter Made Easy

By: jrh13247 - 03/01/2018
I have been in the AV/IT Integration space for over 30 years. I found this unit easy to setup and use on my Microsoft and Apple devices. I particularly like that this compact adapter is USB-powered, so there's no need to carry a separate power adapter. What makes this valuable to road warriors is that the unit provides both HDMI and VGA video output, giving you the flexibility to adapt to newer and older conference room setups as needed. The adapter also features a built-in USB-C cable and gives you network connectivity and a USB Type-A connection for versatility. The unit installs quickly and the drivers installed automatically, and is compatible with a variety of operating systems, which I tested. Perfect port selection!

By: morty - 03/15/2018
I’ve tried a lot of these types of mini-docking stations/dongles from StarTech and while they’ve all been excellent, this one is by far the best because it has the perfect port setup. You always want to have Ethernet because most laptops these days are getting thinner and losing this port. An extra USB3 port is always welcome. As for the two display ports, I’ve seen these in different combinations but this one is the most compatible. Most of the conference rooms I’ve seen are either VGA or HDMI and this has both. As for the construction, it feels very solid and well made and the cable is thick and won’t fray or come apart easy. Also, it’s just plug and play, no messing around with drivers needed. Would recommend. I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.

Perfect adapter for my needs!

By: Shawn - 03/16/2018
I was only able to test the unit with my Samsung Galaxy S8 as my laptop does not have a USB-C port. It worked flawlessly to export my phone's screen to both HDMI or VGA. This allows me to demonstrate our product's mobile app in sales and training environments. Additionally, I love the fact that it is bus-powered, reducing the need to carry around yet another bulky power adapter. Disclaimer: I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.

I got this product to test and I have been using it since. I tried on my android tablet, Samsung S8 and on my laptop. Gret features as you can export your cell phone or tablet to a screen for demonstrations and in my opinion, it is the selling point for a good price. I have a Dell laptop with USB C and work awesome with no fallbacks. Disclaimer: I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.

Works perfectly!

Great little adapter for connecting to a monitor and network when bouncing between offices. USB port makes it even better. Solid build, and fast/smooth performance in the network and file transfer (USB), and USB peripheral use! My only gripe is that the attached cable is, well, attached. Being as short as it is, it keeps it close to the laptop and that's not always ideal. A detachable cable so that the user can decide what length is needed, would be ideal!

Connecting via USB-C this multiport adapter has GbE, USB and VGA/HDMI for external display. The length of the USB-C cable is a little short (not sure if USB-C extender would work) but other than that it works great for my needs. I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.

Works fine, but...

By: MACuser - 11/19/2020
I bought this product about one year ago and it worked fine on MAC book pro: in one single shot you get HRvideo/gigaLAN and USB A connectors. The problem arises with MAC OS upgrade: often the driver extension get stopped by new OS and you're cutted out. This is a huge issue if you consider that new MAC book are equipped only with USB C interfaces and you rely only on adapters for connectivity. The sad side is that MAC OS warns well in advance of future non-compatibility, but fixes and new drivers are arranged only after the product stops working. The result are days, weeks of troubles in business. I expected more from producer and vendor.
