Overview

This 4-in-1 travel adapter offers a portable solution for connecting your USB-C computer to a VGA, DVI, HDMI® or Mini DisplayPort display.

The travel adapter is VESA certified to ensure compatibility with your DP alt mode computer. DP alt mode means your computer can pass a DisplayPort video signal through the USB-C port.

Stylish connectivity for your MacBook with USB-C

Photograph of the adapter connected to the 2015 MacBook

This travel adapter has been constructed with a sturdy aluminum housing and a built-in white USB-C cable. The adapter looks great and works well with any device that supports USB-C DP alt mode.

All-in-one video connectivity, with travel in mind

Instead of filling your laptop bag with different converters for different displays, this 4-in-1 adapter gives you all the video outputs you'll need. With VGA, DVI, HDMI and Mini DisplayPort outputs, this adapter lets you connect from your laptop's USB Type-C port to any boardroom or classroom display, without the inconvenience of carrying a separate adapter for each display type.

With support for multiple video outputs and a small-footprint design, this adapter is the ideal plug-and-play solution for travel or BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) applications around the office.

Innovative, built-in cable manager

The adapter features a built-in magnetic fastener, for cable management. The magnet helps guide the breakout cable into place for quick and secure storage while traveling, ensuring the adapter is neatly stored in your travel bag.

Astonishing picture quality

The HDMI and Mini DisplayPort outputs on this travel adapter support Ultra HD 4K resolutions providing four times the picture quality of high-definition 1080p. The HDMI and mDP outputs are also backward compatible with lower resolutions, such as 1080p and 720p, so the adapter is also perfect for your legacy video equipment. The VGA and DVI outputs also support a high-definition maximum resolutions of up to 1920 x 1200 so you can still enjoy excellent video quality.

The travel adapter is compatible with USB Type C Intel® Thunderbolt™ 3 devices that are capable of outputting a DisplayPort signal.

The CDPVGDVHDMDP is backed by a StarTech.com 2-year warranty and free lifetime technical support.

Note: Your USB-C equipped device must support video to work with this adapter.

Applications

Keep the adapter with you while traveling, to connect to virtually any display

Connect your BYOD MacBook to a provided VGA, DVI, HDMI or mDP display at work

Connect a VGA, DVI, HDMI or Mini DisplayPort monitor to your MacBook, to use as a secondary monitor

Frequently Asked Questions

Before You Buy

USB-C is a type of USB connector that is capable of supporting the following:

  • Data transfer speeds up to 10Gbps, if you use USB 3.1.
  • Bi-directional power delivery up to 100W, if both the USB host connection and the device support it.
  • Alternate modes, which deliver different types of data at different speeds. For example, DisplayPort Alternate Mode (DP Alt Mode).

If using Thunderbolt 3 over USB-C, the connection is capable of additional features. For example, Thunderbolt 3 is capable of 40Gbps of total bandwidth. For more information, refer to the following FAQ: https://www.startech.com/faq/thunderbolt-3-port-capabilities.

Not all USB-C ports or devices are capable of supporting all of the features listed above, or all of the features at the maximum capabilities. If you require a specific USB-C feature, your USB host connection, cables, and device must all support the feature that you require. For more information about whether your components support specific USB-C features, refer to the information provided by the manufacturers.

This USB-C device requires that all of the following components support alternate modes:

  • The USB-C host connection (for example, a computer and its port)
  • The USB-C cable
  • The USB-C device (for example, a hard drive docking station)

If your host device includes a Thunderbolt™ 3 connection, this USB-C device will work with your host device.

For more information about the modes that your setup components support, refer to the information provided by the manufacturers.

Installation

This device is plug and play. It does not use any drivers, and does not require any setup tasks other than plugging in the source (for example, a computer) and the destination (for example, a monitor).

Troubleshooting

When you troubleshoot issues with a video adapter, there are some quick tests that you can complete to rule out potential problems. You can test to make sure that the following components are working correctly and are not the source of the issue:

  • Video cables

  • Video adapter

  • Video source (such as a DVD player or computer)

  • Video destination (such as a monitor or projector)

To test your setup components, try the following:

  • Use the cable, video adapter, video source, and video destination in another setup to see if the problem is with the components or the setup.

  • Use a different cable, video adapter, video source, and video destination in your setup to see if the problem persists. Ideally, you should test a component that you know works in another setup.

When you test your cables, it is recommended that you do the following:

  • Test each cable individually.

  • Use short cables when you are testing.

When you test the video source and video destination, it is recommended that you do the following:

  • Remove the video adapter from your setup and test to make sure that the video source and video destination work together without the video adapter.

  • Test to make sure that the video source and video destination work together at the resolution that you want to use.

Note: In order for your setup to work properly, the video source, adapter, and destination all need to support the resolution that you are using.

The error “Out of Range” normally means that the resolution being output by the computer is not compatible with the display. Try lowering the resolution to see if that helps resolve the issue.  You may need to connect another monitor or restart the computer or source to accomplish this.

To output 4K to a DisplayPort display at 30Hz, your monitor must support the resolution and refresh rate. If your monitor also supports 4K at 60Hz (DP 1.2 or higher), you may also need to set the monitor to work at 30Hz.

To resolve this issue, use the buttons on your monitor to change the DisplayPort settings to DP1.1. For more information about how to change your monitor settings, refer to the website of the manufacturer of your monitor.

(5 stars) Nice little unit

By:
I got this product as I am always on the go from office to office either doing presentations or just doing work at the location. This unit lets me plug my laptop into an existing monitor to do my work on a bigger screen or to a TV to do a presentation. Great device to have and easy to fit into a laptop bag because of it's pocket size. The unit is solid and the silver finish case is strong enough to protect it from the bumping it will encounter while being in a laptop bag. The USB C cable tucks away into the side for easy storage. Nice addition to my laptop bag.

(5 stars) Works great with new Macbook and Dell XPS

By:
Small, sturdy, and one piece (partial "pro" there). Just connected it up out of the box and I had full resolution on my 4k monitor--provided the computer can drive that of course. The multiple output ports are fantastic when travelling. I need only worry about MY computer, and the adapter has the rest covered. I like how the cable wraps around and tucks in. Cons: Just one partial con, the interface cable is both short and non-removable. That's made it rough a couple times, but not a show-stopper. Other Thoughts: I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review. But frankly, I'd have done a review of this device anyway as it's always with me now.

(5 stars) Fantastic Build Quality & Flexibility

By:
This display adapter has enough flexibility to support just about any current display connection requirements. Particularly if you're watching content from an Apple product to a 4K television, you'll find the size and the ease of switching between, say, 4K and HDMI connections simple and easy to manage. The unit itself is quite heavy and the USB-C connector is manufactured from rugged cabling that should last well beyond the 2 year warranty period. The housing of the unit is polished aluminum and the USB-C connector folds in and and holds tight. I tested each of the connectors for fit and each one held tightly without having to be screwed in. Signal quality through the tested ports were good. Packaging was easy to break down for recycling purposes.

(5 stars) Video adapter that doesn't require a power adapter

By:
If travelling or conducting presentations at customers / clients offices we have all had the issue of having the right cable / adapter for a big screen display. With the 4-in-1 travel A/V adapter we now have the option of outputting to a mini DisplayPort, VGA, DVI or HDMI while using a USB-C 4K connection to laptop, tablet, etc. I have one of these in each boardroom to avoid confusion and last minute scrambles. This is a rugged device and should be added to the toolkit of any road warrior! I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.

It’s compact with a foldable cable that fits neatly into the unit, it feels solid and well-built. No drivers to worry about, I just plug it in and I’m ready to begin. I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review

(5 stars) Travel A/V Adapter for Computers Made Easy

By:
I have been in the technology business for over 35 years and for the past 20+ years I have been asked to provide unbiased reviews of various products from both the AV and IT world. In review of this product I found it to be very stylish with a rugged design perfect for travel with it's brushed aluminum exterior. I connected this to my 4K LED display from my laptop and there was no tearing or pixalization when watching a 4K stream at 25'. I like the variety of outputs on this unit, which make it perfect for the business road warrior. In the box: -Aluminum Travel A/V Adapter: 4-in-1 USB-C to VGA, DVI, HDMI or mDP - 4K In summation, solid product, stylish, rugged and easy to use. I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.

(5 stars) Connect any Display to USB-C

By:
This device pretty much covers any external display connection you need for a USB-C device like my MacBook Pro. This is a very nice compact device that even allows you to lock in the USB-C cable on the side to make it easy to travel with. I tested out the VGA, Display Port and DVI ports on the same monitor and found that with each connect the video quality improved. I connected the HDMI port to a 50" LED TV and the picture quality was just as good as my laptop screen. The device only allows for one video connection at a time but overall it is a great find for travel. It is compact and functional.
