The ECUSB3S254F 2-Port Flush Mount USB 3.0 ExpressCard Adapter lets you add two USB 3.0 ports to your ExpressCard-enabled laptop.

The USB 3.0 card uses a unique design that allows it to sit flush in a standard 54mm laptop ExpressCard slot, creating a seamless add-on that can be left installed even while on the move, without having to worry about impact damage to either the card or the ExpressCard slot.

Enhanced with UASP support (USB Attached SCSI Protocol), this USB 3.0 controller performs up to 70% faster than conventional USB 3.0 when paired with a UASP supported enclosure (Note: UASP requires a compatible operating system). Using a more efficient protocol than the traditional USB BOT (Bulk-Only Transport), UASP technology optimizes transfers by allowing multiple commands to be processed simultaneously, significantly increasing transfer speeds for less wait time on data transfers. See our UASP test results below for further details.

The SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Card supports data transfer rates of up to 5Gbps, and is backward compatible with USB 2.0 (at up to 480Mbps), or USB 1.1/1.0 at up to 1.5/1.2 Mbps respectively - the perfect laptop accessory for users to connect USB devices, both new and old.

Backed by a StarTech.com 2-year warranty and free lifetime technical support.

Improved Performance with UASP

UASP is supported in Windows® 8 and Server 2012. In testing UASP performed with up to a 70% faster read / 40% faster write speed over traditional USB 3.0 at peak performance.

UASP Speed Diagram

At the same peak in testing, UASP also showed up to an 80% reduction in required processor resources.

UASP Speed Diagram

Test results were obtained using an Intel® Ivy Bridge system, StarTech.com add-on USB 3.0 cards, a UASP-enabled StarTech.com enclosure, and a SATA III solid state drive.

Applications

  • Users who need USB connectivity, but do not need to swap between other ExpressCard adapters, so will leave the card installed in the card slot
  • Mobile users who want to leave ExpressCard adapters installed, without worry about damaging the card or slot while on the move

  • Upgrade an older laptop with USB 3.0 connectivity
  • Expand on your laptop expansion capabilities with additional USB ports

The StarTech.com Advantage

  • Eliminate the worry of snagging or hitting the ExpressCard with a unique Flush Mount design
  • SuperSpeed USB 3.0 connectivity at up to 5 Gbps, while still backwards compatible with USB 2.0/1.x

Troubleshooting

You should not upgrade your device's firmware if you do not have any issues with the functionality of your device. The only time you should consider an upgrade is if you are experiencing a problem with the device, and you have confirmed that the firmware addresses this problem.  You can confirm this is the case by reviewing the documentation included with the firmware or by consulting with our Technical Support team. Incorrectly upgrading firmware can result in diminished performance so it is best to contact StarTech.com if you would like to perform this operation.

When you troubleshoot issues with a USB controller card, there are some quick tests that you can complete to rule out potential problems. You can test to make sure that the following components are working correctly and are not the source of the issue:

  • USB cables

  • USB devices

  • USB controller card

To test your setup components, try the following:

  • Use the USB cable, device, and controller card in another setup to see if the problem is with the components or the setup.

  • Use a different USB cable, device, and controller card in your setup to see if the problem persists. Ideally, you should test a component that you know works in another setup.

When you test your cables, it is recommended that you do the following:

  • Test each cable individually.

  • Use short cables when you are testing.

When you test the USB device and controller card, it is recommended that you do the following:

If the USB device does not work after your computer has been in extended hibernation, it is likely that Windows has automatically turned off the USB Root hub to save power.

The steps below outline how to configure the USB root hub to stay on during hibernation, to prevent this from happening.

Windows 10 / 8

  1. On your keyboard, press the Windows key + X and select Control Panel.
  2. Click Hardware and Sound, then click Power Options.
  3. Click Change plan settings for the plan you want to change.
  4. Click Change advanced power settings.
  5. Click the plus sign (+) next to “USB settings” and “USB selective suspend setting” to expand the options and change the setting to Disabled.
  6. Click OK to apply the setting.

Note: You may need to disconnect and re-connect your USB device after applying these settings to re-establish the connection.

Plug n Play On Linux

By: PeterThePlumber - 07/26/2020
I use this to add usb ports to a Toughbook CF-19 Mk7 that I use in my cobbled together home office. I plugged it in to the Expresscard slot and it worked out of the box. I did not use the driver CD because I used Linux and those would be of no use to me. And yes, the cover closes and seals with the adapter in place. I can't speak to transfer speeds, because I'm using it to connect external keyboard, webcam, mouse, etc. For my use it works flawlessly.
