Troubleshooting

A Windows 10 update may prevent a Capture Device from being detected by your Computer. Enabling access to your Camera and Microphone will resolve this issue.

To enable access to your Camera:

  1. Click the Start icon.
  2. Click the Settings icon.
  3. Click the Privacy tile.
  4. Click Camera.
  5. Locate the slider that says Let apps use my camera. Toggle this slider to the On position.

To enable access to your Microphone:

  1. Click the Start icon.
  2. Click Settings icon.
  3. Click Privacy tile.
  4. Click Microphone.
  5. Locate the slider that says Let apps use my microphone. Toggle this slider to the On position.

When you troubleshoot issues with a video capture device, there are some quick tests that you can complete to rule out potential problems. You can test to make sure that the following components are working correctly and are not the source of the issue:

  • Video cables

  • Video source

  • Video capture device

To test your setup components, try the following:

  • Use the video cables, source, and capture device in another setup to see if the problem is with the components or the setup.

  • Use a different video cable, source, and capture device in your setup to see if the problem persists. Ideally, you should test a component that you know works in another setup.

When you test your cables, it is recommended that you do the following:

  • Test each cable individually.

  • Use short cables when you are testing.

When you test the video cables and source with the video capture device, make sure that the following is true:

  • Other video destinations work with the same video source. For more information, visit http://www.startech.com/faq/video_capture_cards_source_compatibility.

  • Adapters and extenders are kept to a minimum.

  • The video source is not copyright protected (for example, HDCP).

  • The video standard (for example, NTSC, PAL, HDMI, and so on) of the video source matches the Technical Specifications of the video capture device.

To check if the video capture device is detected in Windows®, complete the following:

  1. Press the Windows key + R, type devmgmt.msc, and press Enter to open Device Manager. Check to see if your device is listed under Sound, video and game controllers.

  2. Do one of the following:

When you test the video capture device on your computer, make sure that the driver and capture software is installed on your system for your adapter. Some cards may be able to support third party software, however, support is limited. For more information, visit https://www.startech.com/faq/video-capture-cards-third-party-software.

Note: The USB3HDCAP requires a compatible USB 3.0 card.

You should not upgrade your device's firmware if you do not have any issues with the functionality of your device. The only time you should consider an upgrade is if you are experiencing a problem with the device, and you have confirmed that the firmware addresses this problem.  You can confirm this is the case by reviewing the documentation included with the firmware or by consulting with our Technical Support team. Incorrectly upgrading firmware can result in diminished performance so it is best to contact StarTech.com if you would like to perform this operation.

How To

To confirm that Windows detects your USB device, complete the following:

  1. Press the Windows key+R, type devmgmt.msc, and press Enter.
  2. In Device Manager, under the appropriate heading, confirm that your expansion card is listed and that there isn't an exclamation mark next to it.  For example, a USB controller card would be under Universal Serial Bus controllers.

Your USB device is listed according to the name of the chipset. To determine the name of the chipset of your USB device, navigate to www.StarTech.com and look on the Technical Specifications tab for your product.

A single USB2HDCAPS can stream over the network to multiple systems simultaneously. This allows multiple systems running ShareView to view or record the input to the USB2HDCAPS.

Multiple USB2HDCAPS can also exist on the network and can be selected in the ShareView Settings menu.

Only the first system that is connected to the USB2HDCAPS can change the settings; other systems that are connected to the unit can only view and record the video data.

Note: While third-party software may work with the USB2HDCAPS, StarTech.com only supports the use of ShareView software for network streaming.

  1. Open a web browser and navigate to https://www.youtube.com/live_dashboard.
  2. Under Encoder setup, copy and save the Server URL from the bottom of the page (you need the link to complete step 7).
  3. Click Reveal and copy and save the Stream name/key from the same area (you need this to complete step 8).
  4. Open ShareView.
  5. Click Settings Live Stream Settings.
  6. In the Website drop-down menu, click Custom RTMP.
  7. In the URL field, paste the link that you recorded in step 2.
  8. In the StreamKey field, paste the text that you recorded in step 3.

Note: There needs to be a "/" between the name and key.

  1. On the ShareView page, click the blue live button.

Before You Buy

You can use a video capture device to capture or record an audio and video output signal to a connected computer.  You can use USB, ExpressCard, or PCI Express technology to connect a video capture device to a computer system.  StarTech.com has video capture devices that can capture audio and video from sources such as HDMI, DVI, VGA, S-Video, component, or composite.  The captured signals are usually recorded with software that is included with the video capture device.  Some software will also stream the captured signals online.

Select a capture device that features the audio and video connections you want to use.  These can be identified on the product page, under the Technical Specifications tab.  Whenever possible, you should avoid using adapters or converters with video capture devices as they can cause issues or negatively impact the quality of the audio or video signals being captured.

When looking at a video capture device that requires software to use, it is important to consider the operating system you want to use it on.  You can find this on the product page under the Technical Specifications tab, which only lists supported operating systems.

Consider what resolution and refresh rate you require.  You can find the supported resolutions and refresh rates on the product page, under the Technical Specifications tab in the Performance section. 

Video capture device usually use drivers and software to record audio and video.  Both the drivers and the software can be found on the product page under the Support tab.  Different software will have different features so it’s a good idea to review the software to make sure it is a good fit for your intended usage.  You can do so by looking at the manual for the device, also located on the Support tab.  StarTech.com only supports the software included with the video capture device. 

HDCP stands for High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection.  This system protects high definition video from being intercepted, modified, or recorded between the source and the display.  All StarTech.com devices adhere to the HDCP standard, so they do not record HDCP-protected content.  HDCP content that is being blocked often appears as a blank screen or a screen with an HDCP error shown on it.

Certain video capture devices allow you to stream video feeds online with streaming platform such as YouTube.  For more information, review the product manual or watch our video on this subject.  You can find a link to the video in the description.  If at this point you have further questions about a Startech.com video capture device contact our technical support team for further assistance. 

Although you may be able to plug in all of the connectors used for video standards associated with video capture cards/cables, you may still encounter issues that may prevent the video from being captured correctly.

About copyright protection

Some video sources implement copyright protection when you are plugging into a non-display device. Examples of copyright protection include the following:

  • High Definition Content Protection (HDCP). This type of copyright protection is included with DVI and HDMI® and can appear as a video error or blank screen. HDCP may also appear on the screen.

  • Analogue Content Protection (ACP). This type of copyright protection is included with analogue video (for example, composite, s-video, or component). ACP can appear as a brightness pulsing up and down.

Copyright protection cannot legally be bypassed, and StarTech.com does not offer any products that do so.

Using video adapters

It is possible to passively convert video signals to different connector types, but the video standards will not always match between the video source and video destination. You may need to actively convert from one video type to another to ensure that the correct conversion is being made. When a passive converter is not available, most video standards can be converted with active converters.

Examples of incompatible passive conversions include the following:

  • VGA source to composite or component (RCA) video, or composite or component (RCA) video to VGA.
  • Composite (RCA) source to s-video.
  • VGA to DVI-D and DVI-D to VGA.

Note: S-video to composite can be passively converted. DVI-I/DVI-A and VGA can be used bidirectionally.

About output resolution

If your video source has the ability to change resolutions (for example, a computer), it may be possible to send an incompatible resolution. To verify that the correct resolution is being used, navigate to www.StarTech.com and click the Technical Specifications tab for your product. Make note of the Industry Standards and Maximum Resolution specifications.

In the operating system's display management, you can adjust your video source to match or go below the maximum resolution and if possible, the refresh rate of your capture card.

Due to High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP), it is not possible to record from certain gaming consoles. HDCP content (for example, movies) are protected, but the console itself may or may not have permanent HDCP enabled on the HDMI output.

You can use a video capture card with consoles that do not have permanent HDCP enabled.

Certain StarTech.com video capture cards are compatible with DirectShow and will work with many third-party video capture applications that are compatible with DirectShow. For more information on DirectShow compatible video capture cards, refer to the following FAQ: https://www.startech.com/faq/video-capture-cards-directshow.

Although third-party software might work with this video capture card, StarTech.com does not officially support or endorse the use of third-party applications.

No, you cannot use this capture card to turn your video camcorder into a webcam. This capture card does not use a DirectShow compatible driver, which is a requirement for many of the software applications that enable you to use your video camcorder as a webcam.

In order for network streaming to work with ShareView, your network infrastructure must have a DHCP server included on the network. The DHCP server issues an IP address to the USB2HDCAPS and allows any computer on the same network running ShareView to discover the USB2HDCAPS.

When you use network streaming with the USB2HDCAPS, consider the following:

  • A static IP address cannot be set.

  • Only a 10/100 connection is required.

  • StarTech.com only supports the use of ShareView software for network streaming and does not support the use of third-party streaming software.

This video capture card cannot record from more than one input at the same time.  

Note: Although the USB2HDCAPS can be connected to multiple computers on the same network, only one device can capture video at a time.

doesn't work for live streaming to youtube

We bought it as it was supposed to work with live streaming to youtube. But sadly, it does not work. the audio of the live stream is so choppy that it is unusable. Very disappointed.

Hello Jim, Thanks for your feedback and review. We are sorry for any inconvenience you encountered with this product and wanted to offer some assistance. When we originally launched the USB2HDCAPS product it did offer YouTube Live support. However, with YouTube Live still being a beta product, changes made to the Live service broke our ability to stream to YouTube Live. We made the difficult decision to remove support for YouTube Live with the USB2HDCAPS until Google/YouTube finalize the Live service and remove the beta tag, since more changes are likely to occur before then. We do however offer YouTube Live streaming functionality with our capture devices that use StreamCatcher software. Constantly dropped connection to twitch

I was trying to livestream a wedding to Twitch and it was constantly dropping the connection every 20-30 seconds and then it would reconnect. With that kind of flakey connection, it was completely unusable. I ended up using a laptop and a hangouts livestream to youtube which worked perfectly (and proved the internet connection was not the issue). I can't comment on the SD card because I never used that feature. If you are considering this product for live streaming, you may want to look at Teradek.

Excellent Video Capture and Streaming

I have been in the AV/IT Integration space for over 30 years. I found this unit easy to setup and use on my Microsoft, Android and Apple devices. I like the SD card slot, which lets you record video directly to a card without having to connect the capture device to your computer. The included software enabled me to stream and record content with my Windows computer and take screenshots, schedule recordings and instantly stream video over the Internet. A bonus feature is that this device is USB powered, which eliminates an additional power adapter. What is Included: 1 - USB 2.0 Cable 1 - HDMI Cable 1 - Driver CD 1 - Instruction Manual Note: “I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.”

Mixed feelings on this one

This is an interesting product but I did have some issues with connections dropping. I was using this unit with windows 10 and was using a fairly powerful pc. Installation appeared to be easy and i had no issues. I was using an old dvd/vcr combo unit to bring in some old tapes. The software works easily enough but for some reason it would occasionally just drop out and I would loose connection. I have used an internal card before and have never had this drop out. I am assuming it may have to do with it being Usb based. I am going to attempt direct to sd which i think will be just what may do the trick for me. Overall the quality was ok. I just have this drop out which to me is frustrating. I received this in exchange for an unbiased review

This device is a dream to use

Very pleased with how small and light this capture device turned out to be. USB powered is an added bonus and reduces cable clutter. Setup was easy though the included streaming software is light on features. I was able to get it working with OBS with relative ease and was immensely impressed with the output quality. I would definately recommend this device to anyone looking for a small, light, capture card capable of high quality output. I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.

NO S-Video!!

Tech specs list S-video in and out. There is neither. I was planning to use S-video output to a monitor but that's not possible. Would be nice to have some option other than HDMI. I don't need HDMI quality for monitoring purposes. Tech specs need to be corrected.

For an S-Video capture device, we recommend the USB3HDCAP. Please note it does not have S-Video out, and also requires a USB 3.0 port.

SD Card MUST be FAT32 Formatted

I bought this device to use specifically with an SD card. Cards come formatted as exFat by default and windows only lets you select exFat or NTFS for a reformat of a 64GB card (anything >5Gb i believe). Once I used a third party formatting tool to format the card to FAT32 it worked really well. This important step is not documented in your manual, just in the product description webpage

Good product. Manual could do better.

Generally a good product. A few things are not mentioned in the manual 1. The need to format the SD card to FAT 32. I had to dig out an old laptop to format the SD card. 2. Starting to record on to an SD card, including what the various lights mean. 3 The need to connect everything together and have input device on before applying USB power.
