Troubleshooting

When you troubleshoot issues with a video splitter, there are some quick tests that you can complete to rule out potential problems. You can test to make sure that the following components are working correctly and are not the source of the issue:

  • Video cables

  • Video switch

  • Video source (such as a DVD player or computer)

  • Video destination (such as a monitor or projector)

Note: When you are testing setup components, you should avoid using video adapters. For example, if you are converting a VGA source to HDMI for use with an HDMI switch, you should use an HDMI source when you test the components.

To test your setup components, try the following:

  • Use the cable, video switch, video source, and video destination in another setup to see if the problem is with the components or the setup.

  • Use a different cable, video switch, video source, and video destination in your setup to see if the problem persists. Ideally, you should test a component that you know works in another setup.

When you test your cables, it is recommended that you do the following:

  • Test each cable individually.

  • Use short cables when you are testing.

When you test the video source and video destination, it is recommended that you do the following:

  • Remove the video switch from your setup and test to make sure that the video source and video destination work together without the video switch.

  • Test to make sure that the video source and video destination work together at the resolution that you want to use.

Note: In order for your setup to work properly, the video source, switch, and destination all need to support the resolution that you are using.

Before You Buy

This device outputs HDMI video signals. If you have a display or video destination that uses another type of video connection, there are ways that you can convert the video signal or connection. These options are outlined below and organized by the target connection.

HDCP

When you consider whether to convert an HDMI video signal to another connection type, it is important to know if the media that is being converted from the HDMI video connection is protected by High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP). If the media is protected by HDCP, you cannot convert to analog video connections because they do not support HDCP. You may experience this issue when you use devices like Blu-ray players, DVD players, and certain gaming consoles.

Great, finally found a matrix that works

By: Pete - 12/19/2013
This is the first time I write a review (along the Nyrius wireless HDMI transmitter / received) I have DirecTV, a Blueray, DVD and Apple TV and I have 5 TVs and a projector. Two TVs and one TV and the projector show the same device, so I needed four outputs. I used to use HDMI splitter with a direct feeds to some TVs and a 4x2 matrix, it worked pretty good but was accomplishing everything I wanted. I wanted to reduce wiring and also be able to choose any device for any TV from in front the TV. I ordered a non brand 4x4 matrix from Bestlink netware because it had some IR sensors you could connect through the HDMI cables. I could not get the IR to work. Then the I kept having issues with loosing the signal. I got frustrated and because I had cut off a metal piece the rack mounting I could not return it so basically a $300+ was down the drain. Then I ordered a monoprice 4x4 matrix and had same problem with loosing the single and in addition it took a long time for new signal when switching between devices. That is when I discovered what EDID was, which I had no idea (google it if you do not know), but basically it is the device adjust it signal to the TV receiving the signal which is why I kept loosing the signal. To mak eit worse, all of my TVs and projector are 1080p resolution and one was 720p so because of EDID issue, I switched that TV with another 1080p TV I had. I can not remember if I did that with the first matrix or with the monoprice matrix I bought thru Amazon. Either way I was not happy so I return it thanks to Amazon's great return policy. Then I decided to order this startech.com one to give it try. I do not remember why I thought this one would work better, part of it think was because I thought if it is $300 more it must be better and at least it is not one of those $1,000+ ones. I decided to also order the Logitech Harmony Smart Control for my Iphone. After receiving Startech matrix I discovered that it had the option to fix the EDID which has eliminated that constant adjusting of the signal the device is sending. I works like a charm and switches between devices relatively quick. The great news I was able to program my Logitech smart control. It took some work because it required a two step selection process, first select output the and input, but I was able to do it. I was even able to figure out how to program and activity using the matrix but programing a delay between output and input selection in the commands. But FYI, Logitech technical assistance line could not figure it out. Now I can sit in front of any of my four TVS switch to any of the four inputs and it works perfect. It was worth the extra money. Finally found an 4 x 4 matrix that worked properly and even though more expensive than some, it was also much less expensive than others.

I love this switch

By: Woody - 04/09/2019
I got this to switch output from an INTEL NUC PC and from my HDMI Audio Receiver between my Projector and HDMI equipped TV. It works really well and I can swap all the inputs and outputs around as well as displaying one source on both the projector and TV at the same time. It took all of 10 minutes to setup as well. Very easy setup. Read the book first as there is a small section on copying the HDMI signals as the unit emulates an HDMI source as well, so it provides intelligent switching and your units sense that they are connected to HDMI so you dont have errors that basic non HDMI emulating switches create.
