What is HDBaseT?

HDBaseT is a standardized, zero latency, video distribution technology that’s revolutionizing HDMI distribution. HDBaseT uses an advanced method of modulation that enables you to distribute uncompressed HDMI audio and video along with additional signals such as 100BaseT Ethernet, IR, RS-232 serial and power over cable.

HDBaseT logo

Extend more with HDBaseT

The extender offers HDBaseT technology with HDMI and Power in a single extender kit, for complete end-to-end solution. Offering greater versatility than traditional HDMI extenders or HDMI cabling alone HDBaseT is the clear choice for every integrator and system designer. The added benefit of power over cable means you’ll only need one power source at either side of your extension, great for extending video to areas where power outlets may be limited, such as industrial sites.

Astonishing 4K picture quality from an impressive distance

With the A/V industry quickly adopting 4K as the new high-resolution video standard, long range video distribution can be a challenge with standard HDMI cables beginning signal degradation at 30 feet.
With support for 4K you’ll be amazed at how HDBaseT maintains your Ultra HD picture quality, four times the resolution of high-definition 1080p, even at 130 feet away from your video source. Plus, because the extender supports High-Definition 1080p and lower resolutions at 230 feet away, you can comfortably use this extender to make any video source look great.

Simplify your setup

This extender has been specially crafted for a smooth, tidy installation. HDBaseT technology allows for single cable installation, for seamless integration using existing CAT5e or CAT6 infrastructure, avoiding the hassle of running multiple Ethernet cables while, reducing potential failure points. Plus, the added benefit of power over cable means you’ll only need one power source to power both your extender and receiver, great for extending to areas where power outlets may be limited. Mounting hardware is also included for both the extender and receiver for discrete, professional mounting.

The ST121HDBTE is TAA compliant and backed by a 2-year StarTech.com warranty with free lifetime technical support.

Installation

There are a few things you'll want to take care of before you deploy your new video extender in your setup.

It’s important to make sure you have everything you will need ahead of time. These items are listed below.

  • Transmitter
  • Receiver
  • Video source
  • Display
  • Video cables
  • (Optional) Ethernet or fiber cables
  • (Optional) Power adapter(s)

It’s also important to test everything in a simplified setup ahead of time to make sure everything works and that you understand how it works.

In order to set up your video extender, complete the following:

  1. Position your video transmitter near your video source.
  2. Connect the video output from your video source to the video transmitter.
  3. (Optional) Connect the power adapter to the video transmitter.

Note: Not all video extenders require external power, or require external power on both ends.  Refer to the manual for more information.

  1. Position your video receiver near your display.
  2. Connect the video output from your video receiver to your display.
  3. (Optional) Connect the power adapter to the video receiver.
  4. If using a wired video extender, connect your network cabling between the video transmitter and the video receiver.
  5. (Optional) If you are extending anything else supported by your video extender connect those devices to the transmitter and receiver.
  6. (Optional) If you are using a wireless extender, there may be a sync button you need to press to pair the transmitter and receiver.

Now that you have set up your video extender, you can check that everything is working.  You should be able to see your video source's output on the display connected to the video receiver.

If at this point you have further questions regarding a Startech.com video extender, contact our technical support team for further assistance.

To get the highest quality signal from your source to your display when you use an HDMI extender, do the following:

  • Make sure that the HDMI versions of the source, extender, and destination are compatible. For example, if you require 3D support, make sure that all of the devices can support 3D over HDMI.

  • Use the least amount of adapters, splitters, or converters as possible. Each device that you use in your setup creates additional points of potential failure and creates more steps for an HDCP key to hop through, which may cause issues with older displays. For more information on HDCP, refer to the following FAQ: http://www.startech.com/faq/video_signal_converters_HDCP.

  • Use an HDMI extender that exceeds the requirements of the setup. For example, if you need to extend the signal 200 feet, it is best to use an extender capable of more than 200 feet.

  • Make sure that all of the CAT 5/6 runs are as straight as possible, with the least amount of coiling.

  • Make sure that all of the patches, wall jacks, and cables use the highest possible CAT specification, (for example, CAT 6), and were tested to conform to the standard.

  • Use patches, wall jacks, and cables with the same pin configuration. For more information on T568A versus T568B wiring, refer to the following FAQ: http://www.startech.com/faq/network_cables_a_vs_b_pinout.

  • Keep the cabling away from sources of high noise.

  • Make sure that you use adequate electrical grounding in your setup.

Troubleshooting

  1. The power adapter may not be connected at the correct unit or may not be connected at all.  Please check your product manual to see where your power adapter has to be positioned.
  2. An adapter to another video signal may be connected to the Transmitter or Receiver unit.  Please avoid any converters for the initial setup.
  3. The Cat 5 or 6 cable coming from the transmitter or receiver unit may be connected to a network switch.  Some of our video extenders will work in this configuration, but others will not. Please check your product manual to see if your model can be used connected to an IP network. For the initial setup, avoid connecting the Cat 5 or 6 cables to any network switch, hub, or router.
  4. The category of Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) cables may not meet StarTech.com’s requirements. Ensure at least Cat 5, 5e, or six cables are used, and they have eight wires. Some Cat 5 cables only have four wires. If using Cat 6 cables, be aware they have more twists per foot, so you may have to use shorter cable lengths if using Cat 6 cabling between your video extenders.
  5. Bundling up the UTP cabling connected to the extenders can cause crosstalk, which will prevent the video signal from showing on the display.  Unwrapping the cable should resolve this issue.
  1. Please check to see if your model has an adjustable Gain dial on the remote unit.
  2. If it does, use it to adjust the color until it is acceptable.
  3. Replace the VGA cable with a higher quality cable like StarTech.com’s MXT101MMHQ.

This device supports up to 4Kx2K resolutions @30 Hz with a color depth of 8 bits. If you are running a 4K resolution at a refresh rate higher than 30 Hz or a color depth higher than 8 bits, your display will appear blank.

To resolve this issue, you need to lower the resolution, refresh rate, or color depth, by completing any of the following:

  • Connect a display to OUT 1 that is only capable of 4K at 30 Hz with a color depth no higher than 8 bits.
  • Connect the least capable display to OUT 1.
  • Connect an additional display to your video source (for example, a video card in a computer) and use this display to reconfigure the display connected to OUT 1 to run at 30 Hz and 8 bits color depth (or lower).

When you troubleshoot issues with a video extender, there are some quick tests that you can complete to rule out potential problems. You can test to make sure that the following components are working correctly and are not the source of the issue:

  • Video and Ethernet cables

  • Video extender

  • Video source (such as a DVD player or computer)

  • Video destination (such as a monitor or projector)

Note: When you are testing setup components, you should avoid using video adapters. For example, if you are converting a VGA source to HDMI for use with an HDMI extender, you should use an HDMI source when you test the components.

To test your setup components, try the following:

  • Use the cable, video extender, video source, and video destination in another setup to see if the problem is with the components or the setup.

  • Use a different cable, video extender, video source, and video destination in your setup to see if the problem persists. Ideally, you should test a component that you know works in another setup.

When you test your cables, it is recommended that you do the following:

  • Test each cable individually.

  • Use short cables when you are testing.

When you test the video source and video destination, it is recommended that you do the following:

  • Remove the video extender from your setup and test to make sure that the video source and video destination work together without the video extender.

  • Test to make sure that the video source and video destination work together at the resolution that you want to use.

Note: In order for your setup to work properly, the video source, extender, and destination all need to support the resolution that you are using.

Before You Buy

You should only use video converters and extenders if it is absolutely necessary to do so. In many cases, most video converters and extenders are not necessary if you purchase the correct cable.

The following table lists the maximum length of cable for common video standards.

Video standard Maximum length
DisplayPort 50 ft. (15.2m)
HDMI 50 ft. (15.2m)
DVI 50 ft. (15.2m)
VGA 200 ft. (71m)

Note: StarTech.com offers cables longer than what is listed above, including active cables, which typically include built-in active signal boosters that allow for longer cables. Active cables are specifically designed to exceed the suggested maximum lengths and are tested at the listed specifications (for example, the maximum listed resolution).

Video adapters

Video adapters passively adapt a cable from one connector type to another. Video adapters do not change the signal type, or change the video standard.

Examples of common applications for adapters include the following:

  • DVI-I to VGA

  • RCA to BNC

  • Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort

  • Couplers (female to female, or male to male)

Note: You can use a coupler to extend a cable for a short distance. However, each coupler that you use can introduce signal loss, which degrades the signal quality.

Video converters

Video converters actively process and change the signal type from one video standard and convert it to another standard. They are typically used to convert digital to analog and vice versa, but can be used to convert a digital signal to another digital video standard (for example, HDMI to DisplayPort).

Video converters work over short distances from the source to the destination: up to 15 feet or 3 meters.

Video extenders

Video extenders convert an input signal to a higher voltage for transmission over longer distances and then convert the input signal back to the original video standard. The input and the output signal will match on a video extender, as the same video standard is maintained end-to-end. If a cable is extended with adapters or converters, the signal quality degrades.

Note: For more information on using a video adapter or converter with a video extender, see the following FAQ: http://www.startech.com/faq/video_signal_converters_convert_then_extend.

If you need to use a video extender with a video adapter or converter, you should position the adapter or converter as close to the video source as possible. For example, if you need to take a VGA signal from a computer and send it 200 feet to an HDMI® projector, you should convert the signal from VGA to HDMI and use an HDMI extender.

Note: For more information on when to use cables or extenders, see the following FAQ: http://www.startech.com/faq/video_signal_converters_when_to_convert.

Yes, this video extender works with set-top boxes, provided the set-top box meets the following requirements:

  • The set-top box must be High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) compliant.
  • The set-top box must support devices being connected between the video source and display. If the set-top box requires a direct cable connection between the video source and display, it won't work with this video extender.

This device outputs HDMI video signals. If you have a display or video destination that uses another type of video connection, there are ways that you can convert the video signal or connection. These options are outlined below and organized by the target connection.

HDCP

When you consider whether to convert an HDMI video signal to another connection type, it is important to know if the media that is being converted from the HDMI video connection is protected by High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP). If the media is protected by HDCP, you cannot convert to analog video connections because they do not support HDCP. You may experience this issue when you use devices like Blu-ray players, DVD players, and certain gaming consoles.

Does not work on my redeliver

By: EnIXmA - 01/30/2016
Bought this specifically for my 4k TV which is being connected by the latest onkyo receiver... Connected, and everything perfectly fine for 2 days... For some reason it just shows no signal on my TV now... The lights are blue so the connection should work, but it doesn't. Seems like I wasted 300 bucks on this and got no way to run my ht system

Hello, Thanks for sharing this feedback with us. It sounds like HDMI "handshake" between the connected devices is corrupted. The following steps will outline the EDID reset procedure for the ST121HDBTE and should be off assistance for you, or any others experience this issue. 1. Power down the Onkyo box (or other device) and TV, unplug the power cables, then unplug the extender. Disconnect all HDMI cables temporarily. 2. Wait 30 seconds with all devices disconnected. 3. Re-connect the power to the extender. 4. Re-connect the TVs and Onkyo box (or other). 5. Power the TVs back on. 6. Power the Onkyo (or other) receiver back on. As always, if this does not correct the issue, please contact our Technical Advisors by clicking the "Support" link at the top of our website. Thank You.

Great build quality, not the best instructions

By: Macphoto1970 - 12/27/2016
So tested this unit and first thing I will say is the construction quality is great. Parts seem to be of excellent quality. Nice that the power adapter has multiple heads for different countries and power supplies. The brackets included are of excellent quality. Now trying to set this up was a bit of a challenge for someone who has never attempted. I was testing over a 50ft cat 5e cable, from my windows pc running windows 10 to a samsung smart tv one floor up. Now the setup appears easy. Connect the receiver connect the transmitter, cable in the middle and go...well not so easy...I found I would get a red light on one of the receivers and blue light on the other. The instructions are not clear really at what to do or what this means so by trial and error I tested. I switched the source (the computer) to a blu-ray and used the supplied cat5 cable and voila it worked. great picture etc. Now I did some research and maybe it was an issue with my cat 5e cable. they provide some green grounding wires but the instructions do not make it clear as to what we are to do with them. and the instructions talk about grounded cat5e cables etc. As a novice with this..I am not sure if that is my whole issue. Do I use these grounding cables into a power outlet? still not sure. The item itself does work and does display and excellent picture. Once my cabling issue was solved all seemed to work very well. I am impress with the quality of the picture and I like the fact that only one power cord is needed as I find too many items need power behind my tv and this made for one less power cord! Overall it is an excellent product just a few more troubleshooting tips in the user manual and on Startech.com would be helpful “I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.”

HDMI Over Cat 5e/6 Made Easy

By: James H - 01/03/2017
I have been in the technology business for over 35 years and for the past 20+ years I have been asked to provide unbiased reviews of various products from both the AV and IT world. In review of this product I have found that it works up to 1920x1080 resolution which is common for TV viewing in 16:9 format, with the accompanying audio The ease of use was well thought through, simply plug in the source and display and connect over Cat5e and the unit does the rest. When testing this unit at 4K Resolution 3840 × 2160 or UHDTV, I noticed a very slight bit of pixelation during fast motion, that distance was at 100'. My only negative would be that I could not get this product to perform ARC (Audio Return Channel), so I it will not be a solution for a Smart Hub/ Audio Return sound. In the box: -HDMI over Cat5e/6 Transmitter -HDMI over Cat5e/6 Receiver -Universal Power Adapter (NA/UK/EU) Mounting Bracket Kit Cat5e Cable -Instruction Manual In summation, solid product, easy to install, set up and use. I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.

Very solid product for the AV professional

By: NickD - 01/08/2017
I have been using this product for a few weeks now to send HDMI signal over Ethernet and so far so good. I have used this with several devices and TVs/projectors with no problems. (Computer, Laptop, Tablet, Xbox 360, Xbox One S, Android boxes, Nintendo Classic, 1080p TV, 4k TV, 720p Projector, through surround sound Receivers, etc.) This package comes with everything except the HDMI cables (mounting brackets, grounding wires, screws, short Ethernet cable, power connectors with ends for different countries, etc.). The instructions provided are very simple and don’t offer much information other than the basics. For example, grounding wires were provided but it's not clear which applications they would be required for. This product worked well without the grounding wires connected. I suppose I would connect the grounding wires in a more demanding environment with a permanent installation. For now I like that they can easily be moved. The mounting brackets are universal and can be setup in several different ways allowing very flexible installation of the boxes. I like that you can apply power to either the receiver or the transmitter and it will power both ends (only one power supply is needed). The devices are made very solid with metal. They were shockingly heavy and seem very durable. I suspect these will be able to survive quite a few drops and bumps. After about 20 minutes of use, both the receiver and transmitter got very hot. I was nervous that I would not be able to touch them soon. After a few more hours of use they remained "very hot" but I could still pick them up and hold them if needed. The temperature worries me so I will keep and eye on them. My only wish is that it have an IR return option like similar products so the source device could be controlled from the receiver. The lack of IR return and the worrisome heat this device make are why I gave this a Good rating instead of Excellent rating. So far I am happy with this product and will continue to use it often. I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.

HDMI over network cable that works!

By: ScottG416 - 01/14/2017
I was tasked with having users mirror their laptop on a tv (after the built was complete) without software and I have found the answer. A facility had just finished a renovation and the tv was mounted, power was installed and network drops were in place but no thought had gone into how to utilize the boardroom to its full potential. After much discussion with endusers and management the most cost effective way would be to use an HDMI extender without any software installation required (since most laptops are locked down these days). With cables plugged in (HDMI and CAT5/6) all is left for the user to do is to plug in HDMI to their laptop and we now have the laptop screen on the tv. Another great product from Startech.com. HDMI over Ethernet

We tested the device over 100’ of cable with great results. The picture quality appears to be flawless and the fact that it only requires power on one end is definitely plus. Highly recommended! The small converters on each end are easy to hide and it was a simple install.

I got this adapter from Startech to test, and I'm using it now for about 2 months, and it is great. It responds very well and no freezing; it does the job, and I recommend it. Disclaimer : “I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.”

Nice Picture

I often like to show family members videos and pictures of our vacation and the kids from the computer on the TV. We also like to watch a lot of streamed content as well. My TV is not a smart TV so I can't stream content to it from my computer. I often have to copy everything to a USB stick and plug that into my TV. This eliminates that by being able to hook my computer from across the room to my TV as a monitor and watch media content on my TV from my computer without having to move it. Picture is clear without any degradation. The two units are small enough to tuck away out of sight. Did what I needed it to do. I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.
