Troubleshooting

You should not upgrade your device's firmware if you do not have any issues with the functionality of your device. The only time you should consider an upgrade is if you are experiencing a problem with the device, and you have confirmed that the firmware addresses this problem.  You can confirm this is the case by reviewing the documentation included with the firmware or by consulting with our Technical Support team. Incorrectly upgrading firmware can result in diminished performance so it is best to contact StarTech.com if you would like to perform this operation.

If your setup components support USB 3.1 but you are experiencing slower transfer speeds than you expected, consider the following:

  • A USB host connection with multiple USB 3.1 ports might not be able to support 10Gbps on each port simultaneously.
  • The type of port on a device does not determine whether the device is capable of USB 3.1 speeds. A USB-C port might not support USB 3.1 speeds, while USB-A and USB-B ports might support USB 3.1 speeds.
  • Any other devices that you include in your setup, such as an older hard drive in a USB 3.1 enclosure, might create a point of congestion and slow down transfer speeds.

To confirm the functionality of your USB host connection, its ports, and any other devices in your setup, refer to the information provided by the manufacturer.

Note: USB 3.1 is also known as USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gbps). Devices that support USB 3.1 should have the USB 3.1 symbol on them. If the USB 3.1 symbol does not appear on your USB source or device, refer to the information provided by the manufacturer to confirm whether the USB source or device support USB 3.1.

When you troubleshoot issues with a hard drive enclosure, there are some quick tests that you can complete to rule out potential problems. You can test to make sure that the following components are working correctly and are not the source of the issue:

  • Cables
  • Hard drives
  • Hard drive enclosure

To test your setup components, try the following:

  • Use the cables, hard drives, and hard drive enclosure in another setup to see if the problem is with the components or the setup.
  • Use a different cable, hard drive, and hard drive enclosure in your setup to see if the problem persists. Ideally, you should test a component that you know works in another setup.

When you test the hard drive and hard drive enclosure, it is recommended that you do the following:

  • To check Disk Management, press the Windows key + R, type diskmgmt.msc, and press Enter. Check to see if your hard drive is listed.
  • If the hard drive is listed with unallocated space, the hard drive needs to be reformatted. Right-click unallocated and click New Simple Volume. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the reformatting.

Note: Formatting a hard drive erases all of the data on it. Make sure that you back up all of your data before you reformat the hard drive.

  • If the hard drive is listed as healthy but does not have a drive letter, for example, C:, right-click healthy and click Change Drive Letter and Paths. Click Add, assign a drive letter, and click OK.

Note: A formatted hard drive will not show up in Computer or My Computer until it has a drive letter assigned to it.

Before You Buy

USB-C is a type of USB connector that is capable of supporting the following:

  • Data transfer speeds up to 10Gbps, if you use USB 3.1.
  • Bi-directional power delivery up to 100W, if both the USB host connection and the device support it.
  • Alternate modes, which deliver different types of data at different speeds. For example, DisplayPort Alternate Mode (DP Alt Mode).

If using Thunderbolt 3 over USB-C, the connection is capable of additional features. For example, Thunderbolt 3 is capable of 40Gbps of total bandwidth. For more information, refer to the following FAQ: https://www.startech.com/faq/thunderbolt-3-port-capabilities.

Not all USB-C ports or devices are capable of supporting all of the features listed above, or all of the features at the maximum capabilities. If you require a specific USB-C feature, your USB host connection, cables, and device must all support the feature that you require. For more information about whether your components support specific USB-C features, refer to the information provided by the manufacturers.

Yes, this device supports the TRIM command. If the OS issues a TRIM command, the command will be passed to the connected device.

To transfer data at speeds of 10Gbps, you need to confirm that the following components in your setup support USB 3.1:

  • The USB host connection
  • The USB cable
  • The USB device and any subcomponents (for example, a hard drive docking station and the hard drives in the docking station)

To determine if your hard drive will work in this enclosure, on the product page, click the Technical Specifications tab, and do the following:

  • Make sure that the enclosure supports the storage size of your hard drive. If the storage size of your hard drive is larger than what the enclosure was tested with, the hard drive will likely still work with the enclosure.
  • Confirm that your hard drive uses the same interface type as the enclosure. For example, IDE, SATA, or M.2.
  • Make sure that the enclosure supports the physical size of your hard drive, such as 2.5 inches or 3.5 inches.
  • Make sure that the enclosure supports the height of your hard drive. For example, 9 mm or 15 mm.
  • Verify that the power consumption of your hard drive doesn’t exceed the power output of the enclosure. If you’re using multiple hard drives, make sure that the combined power consumption of all of the hard drives doesn’t exceed the power output of the enclosure.

Hard drive enclosures require power from your system's USB port. Although you can plug in any standard SATA drive, USB ports only supply a limited amount of power and are not able to power all of the hard drives plugged into the system.

The power capabilities of the USB port combined with the power requirements of the attached hard drive will determine if the hard drive enclosure will work in your setup. The power (in mA) supplied by the USB port must be greater than the requirements of the hard drive.

A USB 2.0 port can supply a maximum of 500 mA (0.5 A), and a USB 3.0 port can supply a maximum of 900 mA (0.9 A).

You can usually find the power requirements of your hard drive in the technical specifications on the label of the hard drive or on the manufacturer's website.

USB 3.1 is the most recent version of the USB (Universal Serial Bus) standard for connecting computers and electronic devices. It is capable of data transfer speeds up to 10Gbps, and while it can use the USB-C connector type, it can also use a variety of other connector types. To achieve USB 3.1 transfer speeds, your USB host connection, cables, and device must all support USB 3.1. USB 3.1 is also known as USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gbps).

USB 3.0 is capable of data transfer speeds up to 5Gbps. USB 3.0 is also known as USB 3.1 Gen 1 (5Gbps).

USB 3.1 is backwards compatible with USB 3.0 and USB 2.0, except in the following scenarios:

  • USB-B 3.1 cables are not compatible with USB-B 2.0 ports.
  • Unless you use an adapter, USB-C ports or cables will not work with USB-A or USB-B ports or cables.
  • Devices that require USB 3.1 transfer speeds of 10Gbps might not work with USB 3.0 or USB 2.0, or you might experience lower transfer speeds and impacted performance.
  • Bus-powered USB devices that requires more power than what USB 2.0 can provide are not compatible with USB 2.0.

Disconnection issues

By: No bueno - 05-19-2018
After I used this enclosure for a day or two, it is keeping disconnecting itself if i move the enclosure or my MacBook even slightly. I try to change the usb-c cable, but it keeps disconnecting it self. The only way to use this enclosure is to not move it or your computer.

Excellent Light weight enclosure

By: macphoto1970_08 - 09-02-2018
I found the design of this enclosure to be very good. The cable fit snugly into the enclosure and I had no issues with any cable movement. The unit does not require any tools to set up and I found that with my 2.5" Ssd it was a very very light setup which I love. For portability this enclosure was great due to the lightweight nature of the case I would recommend this product I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.

Good Product

By: andrewxs11 - 09-14-2018
I was trying to think of a catchy name for this review, but good is what I kept coming up with. I think a tool-less design is long overdue, and this one is well done, a quick slide of the top and you’re done. Fit quality inside the enclosure is good; there is an included piece of foam tape to keep the drive from moving, a 9mm HDD fits snugly but a 7mm SSD would rattle without it. Build quality is also good, it’s plastic so it’s light and portable, flex is minimal and the rubber feet keep it from moving on most surfaces. The included USB-C cable is 50cm long, again, a good length; a single coil and it fits in the same space as the enclosure does for easy transportation. Where I think this would transition to a ‘great’ product would be if you were buying/deploying a number of these for an office or project. The price point and speed of assembly would definitely tilt the scale! I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review

Easy to use and fast!

By: Nick_133 - 09-14-2018
Simple to install drive, lightweight, and fast. All plastic, so doesn't dissipate heat as well as the metal enclosures. The cover stays put too (unless you drop it, on a hard surface, on the right corner--which I did--and the drive popped loose (SSD). Put it all back together and it just kept working. Being tool-free is great as I can carry this instead of an external drive dock, and swap drives in and out when doing remote site work. So my "go bag" just got lighter. :) I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.

Light and Fast for on the go!

By: ShawnO_13 - 09-17-2018
Despite being made predominantly out of plastic, this enclosure still manages to feel very solid without adding a lot of weight. The few drives I tried with the enclosure fit snug and secure with the included foam tape. The added bonus of being tool-less is terrific and makes drive swaps quick and painless. This is definitely another great addition to my tech go bag. I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.

Excellent portable storage enclosure

By: morty - 10-15-2018
I put a spare SSD in this enclosure for some fast portable storage and it works great. No drivers, plug and play. The SSD fit slightly loose but in the box was provided a "cushion" and once install the SSD was snug and didn't move. The enclosure has some rubber feet to avoid it sliding around on the desk and it also included an activity light. My only gripe would be that the glossy plastic has gotten marked up by just being in my laptop bag. It doesn't take away from the function though, just cosmetic. I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.

Part missing, hard drive doesn't fit.

By: tkw59 - 06-20-2020
I ordered this through Best Buy. There was no "drive cushion" packed in the box. My Seagate hard drive was barely too wide to fit into the case. Very disappointed because I need to recover several files.
