Frequently Asked Questions
Installation
Note: The information in this FAQ is based upon the assumption that the print server is installed and can be configured via a wired or wireless connection. For more information about connecting hardware, refer to the product manual or visit http://www.startech.com/faq/wireless_print_servers_pm1115ua_connection_information.
To bridge the PM1115UW, you need the following information about your network infrastructure:
-
The SSID (wireless network name).
-
The wireless security type (for example, WEP, WPA-PSK, or WPA2-PSK).
-
The wireless security key(s).
-
The existing network IP information (for example, the DHCP server IP address).
The network configuration information can usually be found on the network router.
To bridge the PM1115UW in an existing wireless network infrastructure, complete the following:
-
Make sure that your network adapter is on the same network as your print server (by default, 192.168.0.XXX). For more information on how to change your IP address, refer to the following FAQ: https://www.startech.com/support/faqs/technical-support?topic=networking#ip-address-change-windows-mac-os.
-
Connect an Ethernet cable from the print server to the computer system.
-
In your web browser, enter the IP address of the print server (by default, 192.168.0.10).
-
Click Setup > Wireless.
-
In the Site Survey section, select the wireless network that you want to connect to.
-
Click Save & Restart.
-
When the print server has rebooted, navigate to the wireless configuration screen and enter the security settings for your network.
-
Click Save & Restart.
-
Disconnect the Ethernet cable from the print server to the computer system.
-
Connect the Ethernet cable from the print server to your router / switch.
The print server should be connected to your wireless network infrastructure.
On your router or wireless access point, in the wireless connections listing, you should see the print server listed as connected.
The print server is still using the default IP address and you need to change it to an IP address that works with your network. When the print server is on the same network as your other network devices, you can add it as a network printer.
In most network infrastructures, the IP address is dynamically assigned. Since router configurations can change, you should assign your print server a static address so that the computers on the network can find the print server at that address (for example, 192.168.0.10).
To change your print server to a statically assigned IP address, complete the following:
-
Find an IP address that is compatible with your network. For example, the 192.168.1.1 network can support 192.168.1.XXX where XXX is a number between 2 and 254.
-
Click Setup > TCP/IP.
-
Change the IP Address and Subnet Mask to match your network configuration.
-
Click Save & Restart.

How to
By default, the PM1115UW broadcasts a wireless network SSID in Ad-Hoc mode. When the print server is configured to broadcast an SSID (wireless network ID), the print server can only be used by one wireless network adapter. Unless the wireless network adapter is bridged into a network infrastructure, the amount of computer connections to the print server is limited to one.
For most applications, the wireless network print server will need to be integrated into an existing network infrastructure. This allows different computers on your network to access your print server. For more information about how to set up bridging into another network infrastructure, visit http://www.startech.com/faq/wireless_print_servers_pm1115uw_bridging_into_network.
Note: If you cannot connect to the wireless network in Windows 8/8.1, visit http://www.startech.com/faq/wireless_print_servers_ad_hoc_windows_8.1.
The default static address of the PM1115UW is 192.168.0.10. To make any configuration changes, your computer needs to be on the 192.168.0.XXX network. For more information on how to change your IP address, refer to the following FAQ: https://www.startech.com/support/faqs/technical-support?topic=networking#ip-address-change-windows-mac-os.

To use a wireless connection to connect to the PM1115UW print server in Windows 8.1, you need to manually create and connect to an ad-hoc network. The ad-hoc network that the print server broadcasts appears on other network devices, but is not included in the network listing on Windows 8.1.
In order to connect to the print server, do the following:
-
In the notification area in the lower-right of the screen, right-click the network icon.
-
Click Set up a new connection or network.
-
Double-click Manually connect to a wireless network.
-
In the network information dialog box, do the following:
-
In the Network name field, enter the Service Set ID (SSID) of the print server (by default, PM1115UW).
-
Change Security type to No authentication (Open).
-
Clear the Start this connection automatically check box.
-
Click Next.
-
-
Press the Windows key + R, type cmd and click Ok.
-
In the Command Prompt dialog box, type netsh wlan set profileparameter PM1115UW connectiontype=ibss.
-
In the Command Prompt dialog box, type nethsh wlan connect PM1115UW.
Note: For steps 6 and 7, if the SSID for your print server is not PM1115UW, replace PM1115UW in the commands above with the name of the SSID.
You should now be connected to the print server and you can configure it as necessary.
To disconnect from the print server, do any of the following:
-
Connect to a different wireless network.
-
Change the wireless network configuration on the print server.
-
Turn off the Wi-Fi on your computer.
-
In the Command Prompt dialog box, type netsh wlan disconnect.
To remove the network from your system, in the Command Prompt dialog box, type netsh wlan delete profile PM1115UW.
Note: If the SSID for your print server is not PM1115UW, replace PM1115UW in the command above with the name of the SSID.
