Frequently Asked Questions

If the USB device does not work after your computer has been in extended hibernation, it is likely that Windows has automatically turned off the USB Root hub to save power.

The steps below outline how to configure the USB root hub to stay on during hibernation, to prevent this from happening.

Windows 10 / 8

  1. On your keyboard, press the Windows key + X and select Control Panel.
  2. Click Hardware and Sound, then click Power Options.
  3. Click Change plan settings for the plan you want to change.
  4. Click Change advanced power settings.
  5. Click the plus sign (+) next to “USB settings” and “USB selective suspend setting” to expand the options and change the setting to Disabled.
  6. Click OK to apply the setting.

Note: You may need to disconnect and re-connect your USB device after applying these settings to re-establish the connection.

Windows 7 / Vista

  1. Click the Start button and select Control Panel.

Windows XP

  1. On your desktop, right-click the My Computer icon and select Properties.
  2. Click the Device Manager tab.
  3. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers by clicking the arrow to the left of it.
  4. Right-click the first USB Root Hub device and select Properties.
  5. Click the Power Management tab.
  6. Clear the box next to Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
  7. Click OK to apply the setting.
  8. Repeat steps 4-7 for any remaining devices in the Universal Serial Bus Controllers section with “Root Hub” in the name.

Note: You may need to disconnect and re-connect your USB device after applying these settings to re-establish the connection.

Before You Buy

The hard drive adapter requires power from your system's USB port. Although you can plug in any standard SATA drive, USB ports only supply a limited amount of power and are not able to power all of the SATA drives plugged into the cable.

As a general rule, the hard drive adapter only supports 2.5 in. hard drives (HDD) and solid state drives (SSD). 3.5 in. drives typically require a 12V power connection, which is not provided by the USB port or the hard drive adapter.

The power capabilities of the USB port combined with the power requirements of the attached drive will determine if the hard drive adapter will work in your setup. The power (in mA) supplied by the USB port must be greater than the requirements of the drive.

If you are using a USB 2.0 port, your port will only be able to supply a maximum of 500 mA (0.5 A). If you are using a USB 3.0 port, your port will be able to supply a maximum of 900 mA (0.9 A).

You can usually find the power requirements of your drive in the technical specifications on the label of the drive or on the manufacturer's website.

This device does not support the ATA Packet Interface (ATAPI) protocol. ATAPI is required for optical drives, including CD-ROM drives, DVD-ROM drives, and Blu-ray players. Because this device does not support ATAPI, optical drives are also not supported over any IDE, SATA, or eSATA connections.

For a list of products that do support ATAPI, refer to the following FAQ:

Better than expected

By: Qazqaz128 - 04/17/2014
I bought this product about 2/3 weeks ago for my old Internal Sata HDD that I removed from and old PC. Instead of smashing it up I decided to buy this cable and turn it into an external storage device (after formatting). I must say for the price it is spot on, the build quality is great, it comes nicely packaged and I did a speed test with my brothers regular External HDD and the difference was noticable. I really like this product and I would definitely recommend/buy another product. No problems to date, happy customer! Thanks StarTech!

I picked up this USB 3.0 to 2.5" sata HDD/SSD cable as I wanted something small and portable as I didn't want to carry around my Star-Tech HDD dock. I got this cable at a great price and I've been satisfied with the performance and quality. Great unit.

Compact and effective

By: michaelkenward - 05/05/2015
This does the same job as much of the ageing clutter of much larger hardware that I have lying around. Just right for spare 2.5-inch drives. One small quibble, no indicator light.

there is of course indicator light ... look at the sata connector, there are two small holes one light blue when on usb3 (off if on usb2) the other light red to indicate access to attached drive

Works well with SSD, but not with 2,5 HDD

By: danichelsea - 11/20/2016
I bought it to copy my whole computer to a SSD and worked fine, but I tried to use the old one as external USB and I'm not able to format it, it says "non initilized drive", and shows error when trying to initialize.

Hello, Thanks for letting us know about this. What is the make and model of the 2.5" HDD you are using with the adapter? This adapter should work with any properly functioning 2.5" SATA HDD or SSD. Note, that it will not work with 3.5" HDDs. If you haven't yet, you may want to get in touch with our support team to discuss this further. Thanks,

Hello, Thanks for letting us know you have run into issues using this cable adapter. What are the types of hard drives you are using? Keep in mind, this product is only designed to work with 2.5" drives. The power requirements for a 3.5" hard drive are greater than that of a USB port and therefore will not function when connected to the USB3S2SAT3CB. Please get in touch with us if you would like to discuss further. Thank you

Died after 1 use

By: kmradke - 08/17/2017
Worked great, *once*. Now isn't visible when plugged into multiple different computers. Still powers on 2.5" laptop drives and various SSDs, but none can be used. Other similar adapters work on all tested drives without any issues. Ironically this adapter was more expensive and I bought it because I have been happy with Startech quality in the past.

Not what I expected

By: laxdad48 - 09/08/2017
Just got my cable, seems to work with some 2.5" HDD's and not others. Particularly IBM 500GB 7200RPM 2.5" drives. Tried on 2 Lenovo laptops, t400 and t440, and macbook air. IBM FRU 1P42D0752. All drives work with BYTEC drive mate with power supply. Also the cable is only 9" long making it awkward to hookup and use. No usb 3.0 or data indicators. Also I can't boot off known good drives with this cable. I am able to transfer files with the drives that do connect to the laptop

Thanks for taking the time to leave your feedback. We want to apologize that our USB3S2SAT3CB did not work as needed. While this should work with virtually all 2.5" drives, some 2.5" drives can draw more power than the USB port is able to provide. This may explain why some drives work with the other AC-powered cable, but not with our USB-powered one. Our USB3SSATAIDE may be a better option for you here: If you would like to discuss this situation in greater detail, please reach out to us at:

Worked 4 times then died

By: Jimbodel - 09/23/2017
I used this to back up my operating system onto an external HDD which it did rather quickly. I used it a couple more times to back up other programs with no problems, the HDD was recognized as soon as I plugged the cable in. Of course today I need to get software off the backup drive and the cable is dead, the HDD is fine. Won't buy again.

Quick and Simple

By: NickD_CA30 - 11/07/2017
I have tested this SATA to USB cable using several different SATA disks including regular 2.5" spinning disks and 2.5" SSD disks. The cable comes in zip lock bag with a little instruction book. The cable is very strong feeling and has a good amount of flex. The cable is long enough that I can connect it to a USB port on the bottom of my normal size PC tower and have the other end with the drive sit on top of the tower. The SATA end of the cable has 4 tiny pin holes in it which on close inspections with a drive connected, one of them has an LED in it. The LED stays lit to indicate that it is working and then flashes for disk activity. When connected, the computer detected the cable and attached drive very quickly. Transferring data to the drive was very quick and consistent in speed throughout the process. I have confirmed that this cable only works with 2.5" drives as the product describes. I guess USB just doesn't have enough power for full size 3.5" drives, which isn't a flaw of the product but larger hard drives. Great simple cable to get data from 2.5" drives. Instant portable hard drive cable or help in recovery of files laptop/SSD hard drives. I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.

It just works

By: Nick74 - 11/21/2017
Plugged into Windows, Linux, and Macbook. On the Macbook I went through a USB-C to USB-A hub, and got full speed. Tried on an older Lenovo laptop (USB2.0) and the port didn't provide enough power. The cable is sturdy without being too stiff, and is "just right" as to length (in my opinion). Cable-to-connector junctions are solid and reinforced with extra plastic (almost like an RJ-45 boot). The drive-side connector is really beefed up, compared to some of the other USB-to-SATA adapters I've tried. So I think this one would last much longer than they did. No drivers, no extras, nothing else needed. It just works, and at full speed. Definitely going in the "repair bag". I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.

The USB 3.0 to 2.5" SATA III Hard Drive adapter cable w/UASP - SATA to USB 3.0 Converter for SSD / HDD works with my Windows laptop but it seemed like I needed a USB 3.0 port to provide enough power because when plugged into a USB 2.0 it would not light up. Hello Chris, We pride ourselves on our high-quality standards and are sorry to hear about the difficulties you experienced with our USB3S2SAT3CB. This adapter is only compatible with 2.5" drives and does not work with 3.5" drives due to the power requirements of 3.5" drives. If you're having difficulties with a 2.5" drive we're happy to help get the adapter working. If, however, you have a 3.5" drive, we recommend using an adapter that has a separate power adapter, such as our USB3SSATAIDE. PC does not detect the cable connected Samsung 860 QVO SSD thru USB 3.0. It is a junk
| Helpful?
Matt, Customer Support on 13/02/2020 11:17:53 AM
We apologize that our USB3S2SAT3CB is not working with your Samsung 860 QVO. This adapter is compatible with 2.5" drives that draw 900mA or less power as that is the maximum amount of power that USB 3.0 supports. Depending on the size of the drive you're using, the 860 QVO may require up to 1.08A power when powering on or under heavy load which may be causing the problem you're seeing. If you find that the adapter is not working with other drives either though, you may have a faulty adapter. We'd be happy to help look into this with you. You can contact us at where our Technical Advisors are available 24 hours a day, 5 days a week to provide support.

I have a few of these to connect Samsung SSDs to my Raspberry Pi4's. Since these can boot from a USB3 connected device, I have no SDcards in use at all. I am getting reads around 350MB/s and thats just amazing. Stay away from BOT USB2SATA adapters as the throughput isn't the only issue, also the response time is worse.

SSD Trim Compatible

By: lucan - 08/12/2020
One of the best USB3.0 to SATA3 cables out there, It works faultlessly with SATA-3 SSDs and 2.5in mechanical drives but I would not expect it to work with 3.5in drives due to the limited power available from a single USB 3.0 port. This cable is one of the few that supports trimming SSDs over USB 3.0. If using fstrim with Linux, a udev rule may be needed. Instructions on how to do this are on the web.

I received this adapter a few weeks back, but had to wait for the SSD to arrive. So a couple of days ago the SSD, a kingston A400 240 GB, arrived and I hooked it up to my Raspberry Pi 400, using the USB3S2SAT3CB. It's working like a charm from the start and reaches very satisfying data transfer rates. So all in all I'm very happy with this product, also because it supports UASP. The only thing I'm not sure of is the working of TRIM through this adapter. My OS reports that, if TRIM is supported, it's not enabled, but that can also be an issue of the Kingston. But as said before, very happy with this product!
