Troubleshooting

When you troubleshoot issues with a video splitter, there are some quick tests that you can complete to rule out potential problems. You can test to make sure that the following components are working correctly and are not the source of the issue:

  • Video cables

  • Video splitter

  • Video source (such as a DVD player or computer)

  • Video destination (such as a monitor or projector)

Note: When you are testing setup components, you should avoid using video adapters. For example, if you are converting a VGA source to HDMI for use with an HDMI splitter, you should use an HDMI source when you test the components.

To test your setup components, try the following:

  • Use the cable, video splitter, video source, and video destination in another setup to see if the problem is with the components or the setup.

  • Use a different cable, video splitter, video source, and video destination in your setup to see if the problem persists. Ideally, you should test a component that you know works in another setup.

When you test your cables, it is recommended that you do the following:

  • Test each cable individually.

  • Use short cables when you are testing.

When you test the video source and video destination, it is recommended that you do the following:

  • Remove the video splitter from your setup and test to make sure that the video source and video destination work together without the video splitter.

  • Test to make sure that the video source and video destination work together at the resolution that you want to use.

Note: In order for your setup to work properly, the video source, splitter, and destination all need to support the resolution that you are using.

Video splitters take the output for monitor port 1 and mirror it to the remaining outputs. By default, the first output port is the master port that is mirrored to each additional monitor. Make sure that you use the first output port when you use the video splitter. The master port is labeled on the splitter boxes from StarTech.com. On the splitter cables from StarTech.com, the master port is the top port.

If you are having issues with a splitter interpreting the incorrect port as the master port, try the following:

  1. Unplug all of the video connections.

  2. If the splitter is powered, power cycle the splitter.

  3. Plug in all of the video connections again.

  4. Make sure that the first video connection plugged in is the one that you want to be the master port.

Before You Buy

This device has a DisplayPort input port. If you have a video source that uses another video connection, there are options available to convert the video signal or connection. These options will be outlined below for each video source connection.

Note: You might need to use more than one converter as part of your solution; however, you should try to use the least number of converters and cables to connect your source and destination. If you have the option to convert from multiple source video connections, choose the option that requires the fewest number of conversions.

Hello Pollo, Thank you for taking the time to review our SP123DP DisplayPort spanner. We are sorry to hear about the issues when used with the Radeon R9-280 and we would like to offer some help. Are you able to provide any detail on specific issues you have seen? Were any DisplayPort video adapters being used with this product? With the Radeon R9-280 we would recommend using another product that would take advantage of the card’s support for DisplayPort MST. This would allow each display to be detected independently by the computer system and would also be a more cost effective solution. If your model of R9-280 uses Mini DisplayPort we would recommend our MSTMDP123DP which is a Mini DisplayPort to 3 port DisplayPort adapter. If the card uses a full sized DisplayPort connection, our MSTDP123DP would be recommended. Here are links to both products: Mini DisplayPort version: www.startech.com/MSTMDP123DP DisplayPort version: www.startech.com/MSTDP123DP We are always here to help with our free lifetime technical support. If this did not resolve your issue, please get in touch with us and reference case #332-286977 so we can further assist you. You can also reply here and we will be sure to follow up. Thanks for sharing your review of our SP123DP DisplayPort spanner. We are very sorry for any confusion regarding what this product can do. This product is designed to let you use two monitors as if they were one large screen. To the operating system, there would be just one large display. While this is great for some people, many prefer independent displays; where different applications can be viewed on each display. We would recommend using another product like our DisplayPort Multi-Stream Transport (MST) hubs to achieve independent, extended displays. Please check with your computer manufacturer or graphics card manufacturer to ensure it supports MST hubs. Here is a link to the MST hub we would suggest: www.startech.com/MSTDP123DP
