Troubleshooting

Ensure there is no USB cable connecting the duplicator to a computer.

  1. The drive may be damaged. Test with a known-working drive, or test the drive directly to a PC.
  2. The operating system on the computer may not support reading and writing to the file system on the docked hard drive or SSD.  Remember, Windows cannot read Mac or Linux file systems. Also, macOS can read but not write to NTFS drives.
  3. If the drives came from a RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks), they would not be accessible in our docking stations.
  4. If the drive uses 4Kn sectors, check the technical specifications of the docking station, and ensure it can read 4Kn drives.

When you troubleshoot issues with a hard drive dock or duplicator, there are some quick tests that you can complete to rule out potential problems. You can test to make sure that the following components are working correctly and are not the source of the issue:

  • IDE, SATA, and eSATA cables
  • Hard drives
  • Hard drive dock or duplicator

To test your setup components, try the following:

  • Use the cables, hard drives, and hard drive dock or duplicator in another setup to see if the problem is with the components or the setup.
  • Use a different cable, hard drive, and hard drive dock or duplicator in your setup to see if the problem persists. Ideally, you should test a component that you know works in another setup.

When you test the hard drive and hard drive dock or duplicator, it is recommended that you do the following:

Note: For a hard drive duplicator you may need to switch the device to PC mode (if available).

  1. To check Disk Management, press the Windows key + R, type diskmgmt.msc, and press Enter. Check to see if your hard drive is listed.
  2. Do one of the following:
  • If the hard drive is listed with unallocated space, the hard drive needs to be reformatted. Right-click unallocated and click New Simple Volume. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the reformatting.​

Note: Formatting a hard drive erases all of the data on it. Make sure that you back up all of your data before you reformat the hard drive. 

  • If the hard drive is listed as healthy but does not have a drive letter, for example, C:, right-click healthy and click Change Drive Letter and Paths. Click Add, assign a drive letter, and click OK.

Note: A formatted hard drive will not show up in Computer or My Computer until it has a drive letter assigned to it.

This docking station allows the hard drive to enforce its own power state, as opposed to enforcing a power state that keeps the hard drive active at all times. Since most newer hard drives have low-power energy conservation modes, this will cause the hard drive to enter an idle state if it is not used for a certain amount of time. 

 

You do not need to format your target hard drive before you begin to duplicate it, because the target hard drive is automatically overwritten during the duplication process.

The hard drive duplicator copies the exact partition from the source drive to the target drive. Since it is required that you use a target drive that is equal or larger in size than the source drive a portion of the target drive appears as free space. You can append free space to the live partition on the target drive so that the full size of the drive can be utilized.

Note: A partition cannot be extended on an operating system drive that is in use. You must extend the partition when it not being used by the operating system, and ideally when it is still connected to the duplicator.

Extend a partition on a computer running Windows

Note: Do not extend a System Reserved partition. Only extend the primary partition, which is typically the largest in size and formatted with NTFS or FAT32.

After you have successfully duplicated a drive and the target drive is still connected to your computer system (for example, through the duplicator), complete the following:

  1. Press the Windows key + R.
  2. Type compmgmt.msc and click Ok.
  3. In Computer Management, on the left side of the screen, click Disk Management.
  4. Find the target drive. It will most likely be at the bottom of the list, have a partition that is the same size as the source drive, and have an unallocated area on the drive.
  5. On the target drive, right-click the last partition on the right side of the screen and click Extend Volume.
  6. In the Extend Volume wizard, click Next. By default, the remaining drive area is the amount of space used.
  7. Click Next > Finish.

The primary partition on the drive now uses the entire drive area.

StarTech.com hard drive duplicators only read from the source drive and only write to the target drives while in standalone duplication mode .  A duplication that fails or halts will not cause a problem with the source drive.

You can use this device to duplicate an internal hard drive with the stand alone duplicator function if you remove the hard drive from the computer and connect it directly to this device.

If your setup components support USB 3.1 but you are experiencing slower transfer speeds than you expected, consider the following:

  • A USB host connection with multiple USB 3.1 ports might not be able to support 10Gbps on each port simultaneously.
  • The type of port on a device does not determine whether the device is capable of USB 3.1 speeds. A USB-C port might not support USB 3.1 speeds, while USB-A and USB-B ports might support USB 3.1 speeds.
  • Any other devices that you include in your setup, such as an older hard drive in a USB 3.1 enclosure, might create a point of congestion and slow down transfer speeds.

To confirm the functionality of your USB host connection, its ports, and any other devices in your setup, refer to the information provided by the manufacturer.

Note: USB 3.1 is also known as USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gbps). Devices that support USB 3.1 should have the USB 3.1 symbol on them. If the USB 3.1 symbol does not appear on your USB source or device, refer to the information provided by the manufacturer to confirm whether the USB source or device support USB 3.1.

You should not upgrade your device's firmware if you do not have any issues with the functionality of your device. The only time you should consider an upgrade is if you are experiencing a problem with the device, and you have confirmed that the firmware addresses this problem.  You can confirm this is the case by reviewing the documentation included with the firmware or by consulting with our Technical Support team. Incorrectly upgrading firmware can result in diminished performance so it is best to contact StarTech.com if you would like to perform this operation.

How To

It is not possible to duplicate from a larger drive to a smaller one.  The capacity of the target drive must be equal to or greater than that of the source drive.

To confirm that Windows detects your USB device, complete the following:

  1. Press the Windows key+R, type devmgmt.msc, and press Enter.
  2. In Device Manager, under the appropriate heading, confirm that your expansion card is listed and that there isn't an exclamation mark next to it.  For example, a USB controller card would be under Universal Serial Bus controllers.

Your USB device is listed according to the name of the chipset. To determine the name of the chipset of your USB device, navigate to www.StarTech.com and look on the Technical Specifications tab for your product.

To confirm that the Mac OS detects your USB device, complete the following:

  1. Click the Apple icon.
  2. Click About This Mac.
  3. Click More Info or System Report.
  4. Under the appropriate heading, confirm that your USB device is listed and that there isn't an error. For example, a network card would be under Ethernet Cards.

You may need to refresh the System Information page after you plug in your device.  To do so, press Command R with the System Information page open.

Your USB device is listed according to the name of the chipset. To determine the name of the chipset of your USB device, navigate to www.StarTech.com and look on the Technical Specifications tab for your product.

Before You Buy

Some old hard drives (often low capacity as well) may not work because they use an old IDE standard not supported by the duplicator.  Use a newer drive to determine if the duplicator works or if the drive is not compatible.

No. StarTech.com drive duplicators perform a sector-by-sector copy, which means that the target drive must have the same sector size as the drive that is being copied. Source and destination drives must also have the same logical and physical sector size. This means 512n (512 native) and 512e (512 emulated) drives cannot be duplicated to 4Kn (4K native) drives, or vice versa.

Note: An exception to this guideline is that 512n (512 native) drives can be duplicated to 512e (512 emulated) drives, or vice versa, because the logical sector sizes are the same.

Yes, this device supports the TRIM command. If the OS issues a TRIM command, the command will be passed to the connected device.

StarTech.com hard drive and flash drive duplicators perform a sector by sector copy, which means that the target drive must be the exact same size (down to the sector) or larger than the hard drive or flash drive that is being copied. During a sector by sector copy, each individual sector is copied over to the target drive, regardless of whether or not any data is present. A 500 GB hard drive with 50 GB of data on it will take the same amount of time to copy as a 500 GB hard drive with 450 GB of data on it.

If you have two hard drives or flash drives that are listed as the same size but are different makes or models, you need to check how large both drives are down to the sector to ensure that the target drive is the exact same size or larger.

Solid-state drives (SSDs) use SATA connectors to access power and transfer data. Any duplicator that can copy to or from SATA hard drives will work with a StarTech.com duplicator.

Note: If you use a dock to duplicate SSDs, keep in mind that the StarTech.com disk duplicators execute a sector by sector read and write. SSDs are rated by a number of reads and writes. Repeated duplication and sector by sector reads and writes of SSDs can reduce the life cycle of the drive.

Software-level encryption on the drive poses no issue to StarTech.com duplicators, as the duplicators copy encrypted data sector by sector over to the new drive.

Hardware-level encryption or BIOS level hard drive locks cause the duplication to halt and fail, as the drive is unable to read or write the sectors that are encrypted.

Duplication of Hidden Protected Area (HPA) Partitions or Extended Industry Standard Architecture (EISA) cause the duplicator to halt and fail, as the drive cannot read and write the protected partitions on the drive.

Note: Our UNIDUPDOCK, SATDOCK22RE and SATDOCK4U3RE do include the ability to copy HPA partitions, but the duplication is still dependent on how the HPA partition is written to the hard drive, whether or not it is encrypted and how it is encrypted.

StarTech.com duplicators were not designed to recover failing or damaged drives. If the duplicator encounters a corrupt or unreadable sector, the duplication halts and fails.  If the source drive has bad sectors, use the Read Error Skip feature if your model of duplicator has it; however, if there are too many errors, it may still halt and fail even with this feature. If this happens, you will need third-party recovery software or custom-built recovery hardware to copy from a failing or damaged drive.

To determine if your hard drive will work in this device, on the product page, click the Technical Specifications tab, and do the following:

  • Make sure that the device supports the storage size of your hard drive. If the storage size of your hard drive is larger than what the device was tested with, the hard drive will likely still work with the enclosure.
  • Confirm that your hard drive uses the same interface type as the device. For example, IDE, SATA, or M.2.
  • Make sure that the device supports the physical size of your hard drive, such as 2.5 inches or 3.5 inches.
  • Verify that the power consumption of your hard drive doesn’t exceed the power output of the device. If you’re using multiple hard drives, make sure that the combined power consumption of all of the hard drives doesn’t exceed the power output of the docking station.

USB 3.1 is the most recent version of the USB (Universal Serial Bus) standard for connecting computers and electronic devices. It is capable of data transfer speeds up to 10Gbps, and while it can use the USB-C connector type, it can also use a variety of other connector types. To achieve USB 3.1 transfer speeds, your USB host connection, cables, and device must all support USB 3.1. USB 3.1 is also known as USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gbps). 

USB 3.0 is capable of data transfer speeds up to 5Gbps. USB 3.0 is also known as USB 3.1 Gen 1 (5Gbps).

USB 3.1 is backwards compatible with USB 3.0 and USB 2.0, except in the following scenarios:

  • USB-B 3.1 cables are not compatible with USB-B 2.0 ports.
  • Unless you use an adapter, USB-C ports or cables will not work with USB-A or USB-B ports or cables.
  • Devices that require USB 3.1 transfer speeds of 10Gbps might not work with USB 3.0 or USB 2.0, or you might experience lower transfer speeds and impacted performance.
  • Bus-powered USB devices that requires more power than what USB 2.0 can provide are not compatible with USB 2.0.

  • The USB host connection
  • The USB cable
  • The USB device and any subcomponents (for example, a hard drive docking station and the hard drives in the docking station)

Note: USB 3.1 is also known as USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gbps). Devices that support USB 3.1 should have the USB 3.1 symbol on them. If the USB 3.1 symbol does not appear on your USB source or device, refer to the information provided by the manufacturer to confirm whether the USB source or device support USB 3.1.

The included USB cable for this USB 3.1 Gen 2 device has been tested and verified to perform at USB 3.1 Gen 2 speeds of 10Gbps.

Before you can access a new or formatted drive in your operating system, you need to initialize it first and then create a partition on the drive. A partition defines an area of the drive to use for storing data. The partition uses a file system (for example, ex-FAT, NTFS, and so on).

Initialize a drive

Note: You typically only need to initialize a drive if the drive is new. If you cannot find an uninitialized drive in Disk Management, skip the following steps and try to partition your device.

  1. Press the Windows key + R, type compmgmt.msc, and click Run to open Computer Management.

  2. Navigate to Disk Management.

  3. When prompted to, initialize your disk(s). If you are running Windows® 7 or later and are using a drive larger than 2TB, initialize the disk(s) with GPT. If you are running an earlier version of Windows, initialize the disk(s) with MBR. For more information, visit the following FAQ: https://www.startech.com/support/faqs/technical-support?topic=hard-drives#mbr-vs-gpt.

  4. Click OK.

Create a partition in a drive

Note: The following steps create an NTFS partition that uses the entire drive space. To use a different file system, select a different option in step 6.

  1. Right-click Unallocated or RAW volume, and select New Simple Volume.

  2. In the New Partition Wizard, click Next.

  3. Select Primary partition.

  4. Leave the partition size set to default, and click Next.

  5. Assign a drive letter or leave it set to the default, and click Next.

  6. Enter the following settings to format the partition:

  • In the File System field, enter NTFS.
  • Set the Allocation unit size to Default.
  • In the Volume label field, enter <your name/reference>.
  • Select the Perform a quick format check box.
  • Clear the Enable file and folder compression check box.
  1. Click Next > Finish.

The new drive should appear in Windows Explorer.

Mac OS

Before you can access a new or formatted drive in your operating system, you need to initialize it first and then create a partition on the drive. A partition defines an area of the drive to use for storing data. The partition uses a file system (for example, HFS+, ex-FAT, NTFS, and so on).

Initialize a drive

Mac OSX detects a drive that needs to be initialized and automatically prompts you to initialize the drive. If you are prompted to initialize the drive, click Initialize. If you are not prompted to initialize the drive and you cannot find the drive in Finder, you will need to create a partition on the drive.

Create a partition on a drive

Note: The following steps create an HFS+ (Mac OS Extended (Journaled)) partition that uses the entire drive space.

To create a partition on a new drive, complete the following:

  1. Open Finder.

  2. Navigate to Applications and click Utilities.

  3. Open Disk Utility.

  4. Select the new drive and click the Partition tab.

  5. Click Options and verify that it is set to GUID Partition Table.

  6. Enter a name for the partition.

  7. Click Partition.

The drive should now be accessible in Finder.

I have tis unit now and its predessor a few years. Gets the job done quickly, Buttons a bit frail, handle with care and you will have a great product that will get all your clone drives backups ready in case of HDD Failure. Great dockinf station also.

20 harddrives duplicated, 20 to go.

Easy and fast harddrive duplication. Install harddrives, press power, press copy and press start. It can't be any easier. 320GB harddrive takes around 1hour to 1½hour. Support is great too, took about 14hours to answer. Despite the diffrence in time between US and EU.

Cannot Duplicate To 1TB SSD

I bought this dock to duplicate laptop hard drives. It worked fine for 250GB hhd to 500GB ssd but now it will not recognize a 1TB ssd when in copy mode.

If your source drive is larger than your destination drive, this can cause problems because hardware duplicators like this do a sector-by-sector copy which copies both used and blank space. Good , but no rooms for a SSD Caddy ...

I bought this today(March 2020) and it seems to work fine, except one thing.. I use it with a SSD Caddy(Thin plastic Cover around it to the Atomos Ninja V (Video-recorder), so I have to remove the Caddy everytime I take a Backup. I think a SSD-Caddy is very common used for videorecorders, is there a trick to fix this problem..?

We apologize for the difficulties you're experiencing with our SDOCK2U313R. The drive slots in this duplicator are large enough for 3.5" drives so it should fit an SSD with a small case. However, due to the placement of the SATA connector in the duplicator and the way SATA drives are manufactured, there won't be any space for a case along the bottom of the drive. This is standard for stand-up duplicators like the SDOCK2U313R as it ensures that drives do not move when being accessed. If you're just trying to access the data on an SSD, using a USB to SATA adapter such as our USB3S2SAT3CB may be a better solution so you don't need to remove the caddy.

At my federal agency, I support a number of users who each have these drive docks, and who use them heavily every day, writing or reading terabytes of data. With these docks, our users can share data faster than transferring files across a network. My users do not often use the duplication feature, but I use it regularly. We have seen two of these units fail, but in once case, that was definitely as a result of the user connecting an improper power supply to the unit. While this is obviously not StarTech's responsibility, it would be helpful if the power supplies for these units came with a clearly visble StarTech sticker or label with the bay's name and model on that label. Other drive bay and power supply manufacturers should do the same. StarTech promptly replaced the second bay that failed. The plastic covers over the ports on the drive bays are a little fragile; many of our docks are missing one or both. We would like to see a side-mounted, quiet cooling fan that would cool both drives when in heavy use. We will continue to buy these products, and we are hopeful that StarTech will release a cooled dual disk Thunderbolt drive bay in the near future; we need better performance than we can get from just USB-C. We would also like to see a cooled bay to duplicate PCIe NVMe drives.

So far, so good but NOT HOT SWAPPABLE

I've only used this a few days and it immediately addressed the issue I was having with a less expensive USB dock that would dismount a drive randomly. However, the technical specs are wrong. This unit does not support hot swap. If you dismount and physically remove one disk, the other one will disconnect briefly. This is confirmed in the user guide and should be corrected on this page so as not to misinform customers.
